How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.

First time got to experience the milk onsen, was nice. Facilities dated but it was the biggest room we had for stay, and the food was great. We saw deer out the window and monkeys on the way to the area. Staff made so much effort to communicate with us

I did not order breakfast or dinner, which was expensive and a bit fancy. Unfortunately, there are no other options for dining in the area. Overall, overpriced (with a 'hidden onsen tax'), and rooms are too large for what you need if you're a solo traveller. Would have liked details on how to arrange private onsen access.
Staff were very pleasant, the room was comfortable and the location was beautiful and peaceful.

Booking.com states the restaurant is open, while it is, you need to reserve dinner in advance. When I arrived at 5pm, the only dinner I could get was from the hotel convenience store and its microwave. I would have been great to know this in advance, as there were no other restaurants around. Also, everything in the hotel is quite dated, the pictures provided seem quite old in comparison.
It’s in a great location and has a nice onsen. Breakfast was great.

Property was definitely dated - could use some updates for furniture & room designs/decor. Wish they had a kotatsu in the room!
Staff were very friendly, shuttle bus option was excellent, lobby was comfy with a fire and lots of seating, restaurant and staff were excellent - we had a male server that spoke really good English who we really enjoyed for dinner & breakfast, private onsen was great, yukata & slippers provided were great.

The staff, meals and location were excellent! The hotel has a beautiful onsen and retains the traditional ryokan level of service. Easy walking distance to Yunoko Lake. Definitely want to return!

Rooms are getting old
Meal was delicious, beds were comfortable, room was huge, staff was very nice, and onsen were great. You can book a private onsen for an extra fee, totally worth it!

The hotel had a tiered look It was as if you were thrown back in the 60th or 70 th
The location and the onzen with a natural hot spring was very relaxing The fact that we got picked up and brought back was great. The meal was delicious but very expensive Book the room with meals included The room was very spacious

Our room got very warm at night and we couldn’t figure out how to adjust or control the temp since there was no ceiling unit.
The location was beautiful and the staff were wonderful. In fact, the staff at this hotel was our favorite part about this property. They were so friendly and helpful and made us feel welcome.

Located a few minutes,by foot, from the bus stop. Great onsen, the opaque white water were great to my sore muscles after climbing mount Nantai. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Amazing dinner and breakfast. Has this ryokan seen some years? Yes, but this only serves to give it a rustic character and inviting atmosphere.

Some of the facilities are old and show wear.
Excellent and diverse Japanese breakfast and dinner for a good price. The staff is very friendly and supportive. Very good location in walking distance to Senjougahara and Mt. Shirane.

Hotel was a bit outdated and tatty and in need of repair, renovation.
Wonderful location with beautiful magical setting. Very good value and quality food and special presentation. The hotel staff were very attentive and kind, nothing was too much trouble making it a great overall experience. Loved the very Authentic hot spring and cozy open fire :)

We chose not to eat there because the course menu was focused on beef, and we are not big meat eaters, so some other options might be nice.
The location was beautiful, and the walk around the lake and down to the waterfall absolutely stunning. I also enjoyed the natural onsen, which was quite hot! Staff were friendly.
