Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

GermanyThere was only one socket in the room and no comfortable light to make the room cozier. There was a bit of mold on the walls. I didn't feel like the Onsen inside was very clean, it's a bit old so not the best Onsen. The Onsen bathtub outside was pretty nice though but very small. Location is abt 1 hour away from Kyoto and exhausting to get to with public transportation if you have big luggage. Restrooms were small and a bit smelly.
Great homemade dinner! You get to put whatever you want in the Miso Soup and cook it yourself. We did not enjoy the breakfast though (raw egg, fish, rice, miso paste, block of tofu etc.) Loved the futon beds, they were so comfortable I was really surprised! We had a very nice balcony that led to the outside area which was beautiful since the accommodation is completely surrounded by nature. The Onsen outside was very nice and peaceful (though very small). You get slippers and a Kimono to wear inside.

United StatesWhat could have been better would have been if I was shown how to use the air conditioner in the room. I was very cold and then very hot.
My stay at Rate Kyo no Minshuku Ohara no Sato was both relaxing and memorable. The hospitality was exceptional—the staff were kind, attentive, and made me feel truly welcome. The peaceful countryside setting added to the calming atmosphere, making it the perfect escape from the busy city. A lovely place to unwind and enjoy traditional Japanese warmth.

United KingdomCommunication was not clear. We were told in repeated messages last starting time for dinner was 20-00 but learned is was 18-30 (max 19-00) upon arrival. Intermittent wifi.
The accommodation was comfortable, excellent outdoor onsen in a nice setting (not too hot), convenient parking. Breakfast and dinner were simple and very good.

FranceThe service team is very kind. When I got sick and felt so difficult, they sent me to the closest hospital and took me back after treatment. It’s a pity for my stay in Ohara. But local natural scenery and friendly people are really impressive.

Authentic feel- tatami mats, different slippers for everything, Onsen with clear self-guided options, dinner and breakfast delicious with home made miso pastes. Shuttle service , reliable support from the owner explaining bus schedules, kindness in general. Lovely location for exploring nature and gorgeous temples within walking distance.

AustraliaThere was limited space in the hot springs, meaning men and women were only able to use the hot springs every second hour. This means that you may have to wait up to an hour to use the hot springs and opportunities to use the hot springs in the morning will clash with breakfast and checkout times for some.
The meals were superb, there were several ways to enjoy the food and each one is complimented by a stunning view. The location in Ohara makes this Ryokan the perfect place to stay for those visiting the nearby shrines and immersing oneself in Japanese tradition.

AustraliaDon't expect anything fancy and check in at 3.30pm with check out at 10 am doesn't give you much time to submerge in the atmosphere. Walk from the bus stop with bags can be a challenge I'd recommend to use their free shuttle.
The highlight is an experience of old-school onsen. Hotspring outdoor spa and tatami bed. Japanese style breakfast with fish, dashi and vegetables. Hot pot dinner with miso soup with chicken, mushrooms and vegetables. The area is amassing I enjoyed quiet morning on the balcony stranded by woods in this Totoro house)

NetherlandsThere were some seminars on the weekend that could have been announced in advance. It was not a trouble or anything like that, but would be good to be aware since during those are happening (in the main lunch hall) you are kindly asked to please not open the curtains that look into the courtyard. In addition, if you are allergic to dust mites I recommend you taking antihistamine pills before going to sleep. The place can be very dusty since there is a lot of humidity and it is basically in the nature. All things said, more cleaning can always be better, but this is not a dirty place or anything like that.
I liked a lot the easy going vibe, the pace is very calm, and the place is unbeatable. The steep mountain is literally welcoming you every day in the main courtyard. It is a very complete experience to retreat and relax surrounded by the nature and Japanese customs. I also appreciate the effort put on organising the dinners and breakfasts, with flexibility for those who wanted a more westernish version. In definitive, a formidable and rich experience of rural Japan.
