Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United StatesIt was very dark, kind of creepy. We were on the 3rd or 4th floor. I do not recall. There was no shower in our room so I had to come down and wash up where the onsen is kept. It was very dimly lit and honestly, walking up the stairs in the dark, creeped me out. There was no AC either, only fans.
I liked the location, the onsen and the staff.

SlovakiaIt is quite a lot of walk from the station and while you can probably use some buses they run only so often. The rooms were clean but generally the premises would probably benefit from more cleaning. The default onsen temperature is extra high and it is hard to stay there, you however have an option of diluting with cold water but it takes a lot of water to cool this down. The town itself is a bit sleepy.
While the hotel is dated, the stay was above my expectations of the budget price. You have onsen in the hotel but it can be extra hot. Very convenient location of you want to go see monkeys next day.

JapanAdditional fees for towels, parking, etc. ¥1000 yen to park at the hostel, or ¥500 to park about 10-15 min walk away.
Located at the north end of Shibu Onsen and only about a 15 min drive to Shiga Kogen, this was the perfect location for our ski trip.

United StatesYou do not get access to the rest of the onsens in the town if you stay here. The woman's onsen in comparison to the men's is awful. Barely any room. It was like a small hole you could barely fit a few people (according to my gf). She was really upset about the quality of it and that she couldn't use the other ones in the area. It seemed like it was built as an after thought and was not a good place to relax after a long day. In comparison the mens indoor onsen was large and the outdoor one had nice landscaping. The room was also not ready when I arrived and had to wait until they cleaned it. Arrived a few hours after check in. Food options are slim at night. Make sure you bring cash as many restaurants don't take card and the single ATM in town is closed at night.
The location is nice. The men's onsen is really nice. The lady in the front is pleasant. The room was also nice and roomy.

New ZealandCommunal kitchen area could be cleaned, was a bit dirty and needs more utensils; mugs, cutlery, bowls etc. If you stay here you cannot access the 9 special onsens, you need to stay at a local ryokan. You need to rent towels, or bring your own. No ski drying area so we just dried stuff in the bedroom. A few power cuts whilst we were here but the staff were helpful in trying to get it fixed.
Location was great, in proximity to the snow monkeys and the bus stop to shiga kogen. Very large bedroom with toilet. Enjoyed the onsen in the hostel, there is an inside one and an outside one each for men and women. Washing machine available which was really handy. More bedding provided if needed.

New ZealandWhole property including our room was worn out, dimly lit, dusty and cold. Power outlets seemed a bit dodgy - some hanging out of the wall etc. Room heating was a kerosene heater but no guidance was provided about safe ventilation (thankfully we’d encountered these before). Staff often weren’t at reception e.g. we arrived just before 4pm to check in and nobody turned up until ~4.15pm, nor was anyone around one morning when our heater ran out of gas. Would recommend having a car if staying here - buses were infrequent and unreliable / sometimes didn’t turn up. Walking is ~30 mins to main town area in one direction, and same to Snow Monkeys in the opposite direction - which isn’t ideal in slippery -5 degree weather!
Room was spacious and had a private toilet. Shared kitchen, laundry, Wifi and showers/onsen were great, and we were able to leave our luggage before check in and after check out. We also loved the kotatsu - a must have in the winter! Great value for money. Location great for bus routes to Shiga Kogen, Snow Monkeys and Yudanaka Station. There was a small superette a few doors down, and a few small family restaurants nearby too.

RussiaThe property is kind of dirty, could be cleaner for sure. Although the bath area was clean. My room had some dead bugs which made me uncomfortable. You can really hear other people talking in your room.
The hostel is traditional ryokan which I really liked, it has separate indoor onsen and small outdoor bath. The owner is very friendly. I’m a remote worker and internet worked really well. Close walk or a bus ride to both Monkey Park and the station.

United Statesthe extra fees for EVERYTHING. It just makes more sense to include the parking fee into the price.
Honestly- I don’t know why this place gets such bad reviews! I stayed here one night and I had a very pleasant stay! I liked my room a lot, it was comfortable spacious and clean and I thought that the owners were very pleasant as well! The room I stayed in was with a shared bathroom. I though the bathroom was clean and I also stashed some food in the refrigerator and that was very clean as well! Of course the building is quite old so overall the place could use a little TLC. But it’s in a great location! The town is cute and quiet, with several onsens, temples and cute shops. But I do agree with every one else akin regards to the extra charges- especially the parking.

AustraliaThe onsen bath wasn’t clean as it had a cluster of hair that was dried up on the wall. The communal kitchen could have been tidier. Weren’t aware of the parking fee we had to pay to park at the hotel on the weekend.
Size of the room was decent and it was nice to have your own toilet and sink. Having an onsen in the hostel was handy too.

United StatesOne of the rooms that I rented, did not have hot water at all. I had no reason to complain about it because I would go over to the other one when it was required.
This is a great place to stay if you want to save money to spend on other things in your vacation! The rooms were very nice compared to what you pay for, which should not be overlooked.

Japan1. Futons and quilts were dusty, causing discomfort for my allergic daughter and me. We left the stay with allergic sneezing and fever. 2. There was an additional onsen tax that we had to pay at check-in. This was never mentioned during booking. 3. One of the rooms didn't have a washlet, and both rooms lacked a hot water supply. During the cold season, it was quite troublesome, especially with younger kids. 4. We booked rooms for two families and expected two equally sized rooms. However, one room was larger, and the other was smaller, accommodating only two. As a result, each family couldn't sleep in the same room.
It was on a prime spot accessible to anyone visiting the place first time.

United StatesThe bedrolls and pillows could be more comfortable. The only available showers were in the basement where the onsen is. Some rooms dont have attached toilets, so again in the basement. It was very cold.
The onsen was very pleasant and the price cant be beat. They provide heaters because the insulation isnt great.

JapanIt was incredibly dirty! The walls are peeling off and they just cover them with pretty wallpaper. The bathroom in the room was absolutely disgusting. The lady at the reception didn't know absolutely anything about the city (bus routes, places to go...)
The room was very wide; onsen was pleasant (and they accept tattoos). It's very cheap and the location was great, just in the middle of the town.
