The hotel is a couple of minutes' walk from Matsumoto Station, in the centre of town. The room was basic but comfortable enough and quiet.

    Old looking room.

Old style grand hotel, quite an old retro look but that's not a bad thing. They have a running station with all the required equipment you can rent in the hotel.

The bathroom was too small. It was difficult to get in and out of. This would not have been appropriate for a large person so needs to be mentioned at time of booking.

The staff were very accommodating and helpful. We used the complementary bikes and staff had them ready for us to use and put them away for us afterwards.

The room was small, but we expect that in Japan. Amazing that everything you need is in the small space

The ventilator in bathroom/toilet did not function fully. So, high humidity in the room after shower. Noise from the fridge requires fixing.

Very close to train station (less than 5-min walk). Quite a distance to Matsumoto castle. But the hotel has a bicycle (first come, first get basis). Good amenities from DHC. Common Microwave corner with hot/cold water machine, ice machine and japanese books for guests. Available onsen with clear instruction. Friendly and helpful staff.

Air condition is centrall controlled, so it is quite warm in room but you can ask a key from front desk to open the window. Breakfast was average, it was a set not the buffet.

Staff is very friendly especially the old man at front office. He showed me the way to car park by running and guiding me the way while I was driving. Good onsen. Close to station and many convenience stores nearby.

I wish we’d known the hotel exterior was being refurbished - the whole was wrapped in tarpaulin, so no view from the window, which was a shame.

A lovely hotel with a unique, traditional feeling interior. The room was comfortable and quite spacious, with an unusual layout that included a bathroom almost the same length as the sleeping/relaxing area. The hotel has public bathing areas on the top floor, which my husband very much enjoyed using. Breakfast was Japanese style and served as a whole tray of food, though you can also help yourself to some other items such as yoghurt and bread rolls. There is also the possibility of dining in the hotel restaurant for dinner, which is delicious. The hotel staff were lovely - very helpful and friendly, and went out of their way to look after guests. The location is excellent, just a short walk from Matsumoto Station, and within easy walking distance of Matsumoto Castle and other attractions.

    Matsumoto City value for money

Our first room of this stay (607) had two sofas, no storage/shelf space and only two hangers which was a bit tricky. The unit bathroom was also a bit on the small side. The second room (605) had a bit more storage space and a wider bath. Both rooms had city views (i.e. apartment and office buildings) so you may need to request even numbered rooms for mountain views. The hotel WiFi was extremely slow but perhaps that will be upgraded in the future.

We had booked in for a few nights away from Tokyo over New Year's. Hotel New Station is an older building but well-maintained with some nice Showa-era touches (the Seiko clock in the lobby, some of the room design elements, the room keys!). Our room (607) was quite large with two sofas (one could be converted to an extra bed) so lots of space relative to Japanese business/budget hotels. Upon returning to the room on our last night, the room smelled like cigarette smoke which was unwelcome as we booked a non-smoking room. After calling the staff to ask about opening the room windows (you need a key), they could not have been more helpful, explained that it was a building air circulation issue and offered to move us to an adjacent room right then and there. This room (605) was smaller but from a design perspective, fantastic. From January 1st, 2024 the hotel is going to all non-smoking rooms I think so hopefully this won't be an issue for anyone else going forward. The hotel also hosts a running club on site, guests can rent shoes, T-shirts, etc. if they want to join or perhaps just go for a run on their own. We didn't use the hotel's sento bath but it seemed pretty popular.

Little space for clothes if you want to stay for a longer period of time. We stayed only a couple of days, so it was no problem to not unpack.

Rooms weren’t completely soundproof so I could hear a lot of conversations outside- although maybe they were hanging out in the corridor, I’m not sure. Either way I had some noisy neighbours but they settled down eventually!

Cute little business hotel right near the station- a great location. Top floor has a sento for those inclined to chill out in a big wooden bath for a while- very nice space. Room was cute and compact, had all the amenities I needed and was a comfortable stay. I wish I’d known in advance about the little running station set up in the lobby- basically you can hire some activewear so you can go for a jog! Really great idea.
