Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

FranceGreat experience in the Annex private house, enjoying the open-air Hot spring made of wood (very pleasant) with direct view of the river that runs alongside the house. Falling asleep to the sound of the river has been very pleasant too. The top-notch service is provided in perfect English (bilingual) with the old-fashioned charm one dreams of. The family is lovely and very classy. Beautiful garden, large swimming pool, massage available on request, what else? Thank you very much for your delightful and top-notch welcome. By the way, the young lady working the evening shift is a rising gem who has twice come to the rescue of her colleague who doesn't speak English. Well done to her!

United StatesThey have an old world waiting room that is charming, but has a serious mold issue. I stayed in there for an hour during our stay and had a headache for days afterward. I didn't think I was susceptible to mold, but regrettably cannot attribute this headache to anything else. Avoiding this room and this place remains our absolute favorite hotel. Oh, also there are very few eating options nearby.
We left our hotel on Osaka's crazy Dotonbori to find a calmer Ryokan. We loved this place because of the old Japanese architecture & garden. It was our favorite hotel among the six we stayed in Japan (including Okinawa).

United StatesThe property was stunning. It is a traditional Japanese inn settled in Osaka’s Amami mountain area. As you walk up to the entrance, you are immediately greeted by staff who guide you gently, swapping your shoes for slippers and carrying all of your luggage upstairs. You are then given a thorough introduction to your room and accommodations, which was incredibly helpful for navigating our stay here. Dinner was served in our room and delivered in a multi-course manner. They accommodated my dietary issues (shellfish/fish) and made sure my meal was amazing even though it was different from the set-menu. We stayed in late-May, which made the hot spring perfect for the cooler evening weather. In regard to the hot spring, it is a great size for the property. The entire space is very clean and comfortable, making it an especially nice choice if it were your first-time ryokan/onsen experience. The staff made this stay comfortable and special for us. I wish I had stayed for longer, as there is so much to see just on the property and even more activities in the surrounding area.

CanadaBeautiful spot. Exactly what we expected of a rural Ryokan. It wasn’t very busy so we had the Onsen to ourselves. The kaiseki dinner was great, although our Japanese and our server’s English didn’t allow much communication. We would definitely recommend this place.

AustraliaStunning traditional ryokan in a beautiful tranquil setting, delicious food, lovely staff plus an onsen! Wish we could have stayed longer to explore the walks and cafes & restaurants in the area, and just unwind in such a relaxing place. Quite the contrast to our action-packed week in Tokyo!

NetherlandsBreakfast is a bit early and the cleaning of the public bath in the morning is not a good time. It is too early to bathe before breakfast and too little time after breakfast before the cleaning starts.
Beautiful location, beautiful building, very nice and helpful people. It gives a perfect Japanse experience.

IrelandThe hotel is like the pictures, very tradicional, clean and nice, what we expected. The place is quite far from Osaka, which I will not recommend if you’re planning to visit the most famous places. They ask you to arrive not late than 10pm which I don’t like it, we were delayed and they were a bit rude when we told them we would be a few minutes late, which we didn't like. In the end, we were able to arrive on time. And we paid for the dinner and maybe it is to our taste, but we didn't find the food tasty.

FranceWe had a great stay in Nanten-en! The staff is very nice and always ready to help. The place is lovely (room, garden, etc), just next to the Amami train station. The onsen is a nice experience, very relaxing. Diner in the room is fabulous (different dishes are served) and bed are very comfy. We highly recommend to stay at Nanten-en to live fully the ryokan experience :)

Absolutely everything, the staff were so warm and welcoming. The place is like a dream come true. We felt immersed in the Japanese culture. The cherry on the cake was the unexpected snowfall. The food... speechless. The taste and the visual were put for a treat. Just wow. We were very happy.
