Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

MalaysiaThe only thing to improve will be the parking during snow season. My car was fully covered with snow and had a frosted window. Despite being the only car left at the car park, hotel staff didnt provide any assistance nor equipment to help clean the snow. Took mi about 30-45 min to clear the snow and driveway for my car to drive out.
The room is big and cozy. Hotel receptionist is friendly and helpful. The private onsen is a must try. The best experience during big snowing season.

AustraliaThe place is looking a little aged, especially for the price, though it looks like they are working on it. The meals were just okay. We stayed in a better Ryokan not too far away which cost less and had a tastier kaiseki meal. The extra charge for use of the private onsen after 9pm was disappointing. The statues and wood carvings added interest and character, but the stuffed animals on display are not appropriate in this age. Overall, a good experience, but pricey.
The onsen were great - indoor, outdoor and private onsens! Really good! I didn't realise there was a sauna until after it had closed. The room itself was fine, large and the beds were comfortable. Tea-making facilities was a nice touch. Variety of soaps, cleansers and moisturisers was great, added luxury to the onsen experience. Most staff were friendly and helpful, the man on the front counter was especially helpful and fluent in English. The Ping pong table was a bonus. Being able to book breakfast and dinner was very good.

The staff here were soooo friendly and helpful. Most of the front desk staff speak decent English and are super helpful. My fiance felt that the privaye onsen was a bit too hot and they were very quick in allowing us to use another one with slightly milder temperatures. The numerous reviews of the lack of cleanliness in the hotel have either been overstated or addressed. The room was very large and clean. The reviews of the onsen having algae are understandably ignorant, the algae is something that onsen enthusiasts enjoy because it (supposedly) has incredibly positive effects on your skin, and is a sign that the onsen water has not been treated with harsh chemicals. The food was incredible and you should definitely opt for the half board. Both breakfasts and dinners we had were a huge spread and very filling, we did have issues breathing after finishing our meals. It is regrettable that there are so many negative reviews which I feel are quite unfair after staying here, as they definitely did make me second guess my choice to stay here. The place has been a bit worn with age but this has only lent to its charm. The futon beds were very comfortable, and better than the ones we slept on at more expensive ryokans. I wish that the gift shop was a bit more well stocked. I hope to return to see this establishment rejuvenated in the future. Perhaps if the garden was restored and certain parts of the hotel refreshed, it would be a truly exceptional stay.

SingaporeA good location to stay in Hirayu Onsen as it is about 3 mins walk from the Bus Terminal. This Hotel is good as it comes with a relatively big room similar to Ryokan style rooms Tatami Mats and Futon bed. The Hotel has open air Public Onsen and Private Onsen for couples/family. We just made a reservation at the front desk for the Private Onsen. The Onsen is free for Hotel Guests. There is also in-hotel Dinner and Breakfast service but reservations have to made in advance. The Dinner was reasonably priced and good. Check-in service by the Front Desk Staff Hiroki-san was friendly, fast and efficient as he is able to communicate with good english. Hiroki-san was also excellent in providing to our other needs and requests during our 3 nights stay. Good job Nakamurakan 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

AustraliaThe only issue is a bit of lack of maintenance of hotel structures as it is getting a bit old. However, NO real problem as it has an incredible charm in spite a bit old look!!!
This hotel is like from another space!! Very beautifully conceived and all hallways decorated with large vitrines with the most extravagant and beautiful pieces of antiques!! From beautiful sculptures and vases to exquisite carvings and other large and small objects!! Room very large (VERY large for Japanese conditions!!) very nicely decorated and comfortable!! Private Onsen bath on open air !!! What a pleasure!! Dinner and breakfast were SUPER!!! Absolute must to take dinner!!! Absolutely delicious for taste and eyes!!!
