Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United StatesIf you click on the property address link on booking.com, Google maps will not take you to the correct location. You need to type in the name of the hotel rather than following the address link provided in the booking.com email.
The building itself is older and humble, but it is extremely clean, well equipped, and very comfortable. The property manager was quite possibly one of the nicest people I've ever met in my life. There's a bus stop very close by that makes this location particularly convenient.

IrelandGoogle Maps brought me to a wrong location initially, and the owner of that property drove me to the guesthouse.
The manager was so helpful. He even walked me to the bus stop the first morning to show me where it was.

IrelandIt's a traditional Japanese house so the walls are quite thin and we could hear the people in the next room. Not a huge issue, everyone was quiet during quiet hours after 11pm :)
The guest house manager greeted us warmly when we arrived and let us leave our bags as we were too early for check-in. He can only speak Japanese, but I saw other guests use Google translate no problem. The property is a 10-second walk from the Oshiba bus stop and a 15-minute walk down to Moto-Hakone and Lake Ashi, making it a very convenient location. Even though we went during a really busy holiday period, we were happy to find this property for a much cheaper price than other spots around Hakone. There are lots of facilities including TV in the room, free tea/coffee and ramen noodles that can be bought in the kitchen for 200 yen. The beds were comfy and there was lots of information available regarding what to do in Hakone. You can cook in the kitchen and store food in the fridge. There's also a smoking spot in front of the house. Great if you're looking to have the traditional Japanese home experience. The manager even let us take an umbrella as we were very unprepared for the rain on our last day.

spotless! more things than we expected like bath robe, air purifier, toothbrush and toothpaste and everything else you'd expect in a real hotel

PortugalThe guest house had japanese style rooms with plenty of space. The futons were very comfortable, and the rooms ensured a comfortable and warm stay during the winter. Yukata and other amenities were also provided. In terms of location, the guest house has bus access right in front of it. Note that the walk to Motohakone by foot also isn't too bad if you're not movement impaired. However, the best part of the stay was definitely the host, which was very welcoming and made sure we had everything we needed for a pleasant stay, even with the language barrier. Would come again!

SingaporeIf you are into late night snacking, you should be aware that there are no food options near the guest house. It is recommended that you take a quick bus ride down to the ‘town’ area to stock up for the night! There is a lawson mart there too.
The bus ride up is pretty long but when you alight at moto hakone guest house’s bus stop, it is a mere 1-2 minute walk from it. The host is exceptional at his job. Very amicable. He always ensures that you are having a comfortable and enjoyable stay. Does his best to provide the most effective advice when needed too. Facilities are alright, the rooms are really nice though! Cleanliness throughout the property is observed - important for me! The home (especially the rooms) looks cosier in-person than in pictures too. Highly recommend!

ItalyQuite off the beaten track if you're looking for nightlife. Getting there with pubblic transport takes a while and a little walk uphill is required, although nothing difficult.
I liked this accommodation very much, from the traditional style bedroom with tatami floor and futon mattress to the kimono available for guest. A traditional experience for a relative cheap price. The host is very kind and attentive.

GermanyThis is just nitpicking, because what I liked about the location is that it is quiet and calm, but it isn’t really an area to walk around to take a stroll in at night because not many places are open nearby. But as I mentioned already, the bus stop is nearby if needed, and the room in the guesthouse is a nice place to relax in the evenings.
The guesthouse was very charming and comfortable. I loved the Japanese style room with a futon and tatami mats, and also a yukata to wear. Coming back to the room after a chilly day exploring and being greeted by a fresh pot of hot water to make tea was perfect! The Japanese style bath was also very nice to relax after a long day. Even though it was a shared bathroom, it was well distributed - the toilet was near my room, and I didn’t really feel like I was sharing it with anyone else. I also really liked the location, it was in the quieter part of Hakone - a 10 minute walk to Lake Ashi, 15 minute walk to Hakone Shrine, and near the bus station which is very convenient. The manager was also very attentive and kind, always there to help and to answer any questions.

IndiaEasily one of the best accomodations we have ever stayed at. The guesthouse is located on the other end of the Hakone loop, which is good if you're looking for some solitude away from the crowd. The guesthouse is at a walking distance from two bus stations - Oshiba on the H line and Kyu kaidoguchi on the the K line, which made it convenient to come from Hakone Yumoto as well as visit Tenzan Onsen. The guesthouse is just a 10 minute walk from Motohakone port from where you can start the Hakone loop by boarding the Cruise ship. The guesthouse itself is clean with traditional rooms. We were provided with Yukatas for our stay which was fascinating to wear. There was a well-equipped kitchen that we could access at all times. The owner is a young impressionable man who goes above and beyond to make your stay comfortable and answers all your queries promptly.

CanadaTypically Japanese steep and intense stairs. Honestly, not a single other issue with this place.
The location is literally steps from a major bus stop (Oshiba), so that really couldn't be better for those who aren't into staying at or near one of the busier areas. It's a guest house, so it's in that kind of hostel style, though it does have individual rooms. Ours was a good size for two people, and the place is spotlessly clean and comfortable. The host was incredible for communication and suggestions. Very helpful, and very conscientious about explaining everything from the common kitchen and bathroom areas, to how to use the air conditioning controller. Really personable and nice. The facilities are clean and easy to use, with bathrooms located on each floor. The futons were really comfortable, and the blankets were AMAZING. The provided yukata were good for our plus-sized selves, and also really comfortable. Honestly, this place was the best part of our time in Hakone.
