Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomNothing!
A really beautiful hotel with many details thought of. So many complimentary things offered which really enhance your stay from the robes and slippers you change into when you arrive, ice lollies after the onsen, noodles in the evening, marshmallows for roasting on the terrace, it feels like the staff really want to go the extra mile to surprise and delight you. The rooms were beautiful and comfortable and the onsens themselves an amazing experience that we all loved, even our children age 10,12 and 14 enjoyed them. The food was very traditional and incredibly special with exceptional presentation. The dinner is expensive but a real treat for the senses. I highly recommend the breakfasts as well. We took the bus to Kamikochi for easy hiking/walking which was perfect. All in all the most perfect start to our Japanese adventure. I’m so glad we had some time in the mountains before Kyoto and Tokyo. Most staff speak some English but google translate is helpful if you need to say more than the basics!

PortugalOur room was very far from reception and there was no one to help (it was in a floor with no elevator). The layout was a bit confusing, even though the staff was helpful. It would be helpful to have more information. About the facilities and amenities.
The private bath and the overall atmosphere. It was a very nice break after visiting Tokyo. They also had complementary noodles (10:00-11:00 pm), which was great. Drinks available in the lounge.

United KingdomI would have liked more explanation of what the food was with the set menu. Even if this is in Japanese it would be nice to know what everything is - a small point though.
Very peaceful atmosphere, we each had the rooms with the Japanese style bath which was very nice, and the access to the private ones. We also very much enjoyed the lounge and the additional snacks / drinks in the reception area which is a great facility due to the remote location. It really had a spa atmosphere totally relaxing. We didn't have the dinner the first night because we arrived after 6.30pm but we were aware of this so ate in Matsumoto before driving up.

United StatesThrilled with my stay. Unique experience, the highlight of my multi week trip to Japan! Super convenient for getting to & from Kamikochi and cities being right by the bus stop - really glad I stayed here instead of Takayama. 11/10, would absolutely stay again!

AustraliaAs with many Japanese beds, they were a little on the firm side for us.
A lovely traditional Ryokan in a good location just a few minutes walk to town or a short walk through a track at the back of the property to a bus pick up location for Kamikochi. Large traditional Japanese rooms with normal beds off the ground, always a pleasant surprise after many sleeps on futons on the floor. Loved the hot spring spa in our room and the communal fire pit was a huge bonus for us, as was the private outdoor onsen that my partner and I could enjoy together. The optional breakfast was delicious too. I would highly recommend this Ryokan.

United StatesHirayu onsen is a small village not far from Kamikochi Of course, the main attraction in the area is Kami Kochi, but in my opinion, here are you is a more relaxed and nice area to stay rather in the very busy area of Kamikochi The resort that we stayed in has great breakfast (for the carnivore very rich dinner) and amazing view in a peaceful and a quiet nature environment. I highly recommend.

AustraliaLoved the bathroom with its private onsen, The size of the room, the peaceful views, the helpful staff and the relaxing atmosphere. There were private and public onsen in the facility as well which were well maintained. The resort is close to Hirayu Bus terminal, perfect for catching the bus to Kamikochi, the Ropeway or the express bus to Shinjuku. Meals were excellent.

SingaporeThe dinner was a let down. Compared with other onsen hotel the presentation was on par but food quality was disappointing.
A hotel in a quiet spot that offers free flow of wine / beer and sake. Nice onsen too. A short walk to Nohi terminal to Kamokochi.

GermanyThis was my third stay now and it keeps impressing me. Tranquil building, polite staff, excellent food and extras like drinks and snacks during the day. It is very relaxing and quiet inside and you can soak in the outside and inside bath as much as you want (private and public). Thank you again for the spontaneous pick up from the bus station when it started pouring. Can recommend at least 2 nights including dinner and breakfast and take your time to get out of the busy cities.

HungaryFor the price of the accommodation we found really little help when it came eating our meals. Both meals were huge and there were plenty of things we have never tried before - a little help telling us what is what and how it is best to eat would have made a massive difference.
The onsen, the drink package and the beauty.

MalaysiaStaffs are not really friendly, they won't greet or smile to you while they meet you anywhere in hotel. Dinner portions too small, there are 6 of us, and we all were not full after the meal:(
Outdoor private onsens are superb! Really love it! Rooms are huge and view from windows are perfect! I personally like the hot sake provided at the lobby, taste good.
