Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United StatesThe traditional paper screens over the windows are nice, but they do little to blockout sunlight. With it being summer, the sun rises at about 4:40am, so the room is filled with morning light making it a challenge to continue to sleep.
The staff were always very kind and helpful.

United StatesWe really enjoy the attention to detail hospitality. They provide shuttle picked up at the train station after 2 pm. Also shuttle to snow monkey park. Beautiful and delicious dinner and breakfast in a private room. The traditional Japanese room is a wonderful experience.

United StatesThe stickers for my slippers kept coming off - might need a new method for this or not use labels. Breakfast portion was too much food for one person in my opinion, felt bad to waste food. No real complaints beyond these, I would absolutely stay here again.
Convenient location to all of the local onsens and town. Staff was very accommodating.

United KingdomNot an issue but the hotel isn't officially part of Shibu Onsen, despite being literally next to it, so you don't get access to the 9 onsens there. But there are two in the hotel, which are incredible, and you get access to two other public ones which are close and very similar to Shibu Onsen so you don't miss out.
We loved our stay at Masuya. Everything about the place was perfect! The staff were the friendliest and most welcoming people we came across in our entire holiday (and that's saying something!) and made us feel so special. We travelled with our 6month baby and the team were so nice and playful with her, she absolutely loved them too! The hotel is very well located and has beautiful onsens on site (much nicer than the photos show). The room was comfy and clean and the meals were incredible! All the food was beautiful and so tasty. The best experience!

We stayed in a room with a private onsen, which was spacious and well laid out—the living room, bedroom, toilet, and bath were all separate. I especially loved the toiletries: the face wash was from Pola, and the shampoo and body wash were from Detaille. The homemade green tea and daily snacks were lovely touches that added to the experience. We also thoroughly enjoyed the traditional breakfast and dinner. The ingredients were fresh and everything was perfectly prepared. The staff were friendly and polite throughout our stay. Honestly, everything was flawless.

United KingdomNot sure really!
The hospitality provided by this hotel was exceptional, and we felt very welcome and at home there. The food was also lovely, and the room spacious enough for the money. We stayed here because we wanted to visit the snow monkey park, and it was a good location with various shops and a train station within a 30 minute walk. We also did a nice long hike up into the mountains from here, and saw wild monkeys so an excellent location for us. Good value for money and great staff, nothing was too much trouble.

United StatesLoved everything!
Loved everything about our stay here! They were very responsive to messages prior to our stay and accommodated a seafood allergy in our party. The staff was extremely friendly. We felt welcomed from the moment we arrived at the train station and were met by the shuttle. The meals (breakfast and dinner) were some of the best that we had during our entire trip. The location was ideal for our plans to see the snow monkeys and there was a shuttle from the hotel to the park. The bath (onsen) in the hotel was clean and an absolute joy. Overall, we felt very well taken care of and have fantastic memories of this experience!
