Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

The hotel is located in the heart of the hot springs area, offering an immersive and relaxing experience. Our room featured a private deck and its own hot spring bath—it was absolutely amazing to soak in the comfort of our own onsen while surrounded by nature. The hotel also offers a complimentary happy hour with mini cookies, candies, and a selection of liquors, which we thoroughly enjoyed. We relaxed on the rooftop lounge chairs and indulged in the massage chair, which was perfect for unwinding. Dinner was truly a highlight—beautifully presented and delicious, rivaling the quality and elegance of a Michelin-starred restaurant. Every detail of the stay felt thoughtfully curated and luxurious.

United KingdomWhat an incredible experience. This is a very special hotel and we loved every minute of our stay. The room, private onsen and view were wonderful. The bed was super comfy (and huge!). The food was absolutely delicious - Nagasaki beef with truffled egg was up there with the best things we've ever eaten. All the staff were perfect. The lady who served us at dinner and breakfast, and the gentleman who checked us in / out were so lovely. Free drinks were also appreciated! We were very sorry to leave!

AustraliaNothing. That we couldn’t stay longer.
It’s advertised as a 3 star hotel but I think it’s more like a 5 star. The location couldn’t be better,(overlooking the national park), the facilities were amazing, the dining exquisite and the staff provided outstanding service. It was a wonderful experience.

SingaporeIt is a matter of luck if you have a relatively clear sky to see the hot springs... IF it is foggy then all views will be obscured.... if you stay two nights, this should ensure you get to enjoy the views nonetheless. The breakfast and dinner area can be improved for better or more romantic ambience.
I loved the room that faced the Unzen hot springs. It has also the private bath with windows that provide views of the hot springs. The room is huge too, though longish in style. Once you step in the door, 1st section is the traditional tatami seating area, 2nd section followed by the beds, and then the 3rd section is the sofa seating area. For half-board, had Western/French for first nights, and Japanese for 2nd night. Dinner quality is a 7 out of 10. Staff attentiveness and service level depends on the attending staff (varied standards). The beef steak I was served had very high fat content which dampened my dinner experience by a notch, but the hotel mgt did try and make good offering me options, thus I appreciate their sincere attempt to improve the experience.

United StatesIf you didn't have a car, the taxi was extremely expensive for a short trip to the ropeway (9,000 yen). We hiked up and let the driver wait for us during that hour.
The room included drinks at the rooftop and at the bar lounge. Also, the room was big and the bath was amazing. The hotel was right in front of the Unzen hot springs so we could walk around and look at where the martyrs were killed.

SingaporeVery little to dislike. They even have complimentary after dinner drinks area and snacks.
The Hotel is well appointed and very classy in its own way. The staff are extremely helpful and friendly and there is always service with a smile. It has the charm of a Japanese hotel but they have also added the uniqueness of European influences in that area. The dining area is classy and a combination of both Japanese and European culture including the food served.

United StatesNothing! We only stayed two nights but I just wished we stayed one more day to be able to explore more the surrounding areas.
The location was perfect right next to Unzen Jigoku and waking up to the view outside our hotel room was peaceful and prayerful. The private onsen in the room was heavenly and we took advantage of it sometimes multiple times a day. The meals (breakfast and dinner courses) were delicious and gave us a wide range of Japanese dishes. It was also nice to be able to walk down in our Japanese PJ's to relaxingly eat and gaze out the window on Unzen Jigoku. The service was very attentive. The rooms were very spacious.

CanadaEverything was great!
Everything! This was the best experience we’ve had on our trip and, while costly, it was worth every cent. Everything was just perfect, the location, the intricate delicious meals, the luxurious vila, the rooftop terrace enjoying the complementary drinks overlooking the famous Unzen “Hell”… But the best was the kindness of the staff. Their genuine efforts and enthusiasm to do everything they can to make our stay memorable was really touching - a special thank you to each one of them! We warmly recommend this hotel and hope to be back soon!

United KingdomThe odour of the volcanic spring was noticeable and quite strong. This had nothing to do with the hotel (which was superb) but something to note if you are sensitive to it. The hotel rooms themselves were perfect and not odorous at all.
Superb room with Onsen. Wonderful, kind and welcoming service. Complimentary bar and drinks in the evening (on the rooftop!) were a total bonus. Would stay again!

United StatesWe liked everything about Unzen Kyushu Hotel.
The dinner was fabulous. We stayed three nights in a suite. We had Western dinner, 7+ courses, the first night, Japanese kaiseki the second night, and combination of the two the third night. The chef who cooked for us all three nights really did a wonderful job! Of course, the service was exceptional, and the suite exceeded our expectation.
