Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomNothing. It was great.
Lovely rooms. Clean. Great comfy beds. So relaxing. The Onsen in the hotel was perfect. Water straight from the spring. Fresh water every day. But the highlight was the service. Miky-san went above and beyond to make my stay enjoyable and comfortable. And so friendly and engaging. She made the stay go from nice to memorable. Thank you so much!

FranceThe facility is modern and comfortable, several onsen are available there and it's very easy to access the nearby onsen. The location is amazing, and the service is also stellar. Plus you get free deserts waiting for you in the fridge!

United StatesThere was nothing that we didn’t like.
Excellent location, next to Sainonkawara Park, which had the best open air Onsen and Foot Bath area. Within easy walking distance of the town center and the Yubatake. And best of all, Miki (the owner) and her staff were outstanding hostesses! Miki, in particular, went out of her way to make sure we had everything we needed. The room we had was spacious and had a western-style bed. We definitely, will return to this hotel in the future!

CanadaNothing. It was all wonderful!
Excellent location and the staff is wonderful. There’s only a very limited number of rooms so it’s more of a boutique hotel but it doesn’t take anything away from it.

ItalyMy wife and a friend of ours spent the weekend at Kusatsu Hotel Bekkan Wata no Yu. From the moment we arrived, the staff was incredibly welcoming. The room was cozy, and the onsen was wonderfully relaxing. One day, there was heavy snow, and we didn’t have proper footwear. Fortunately, the hotel provided us with snow boots, allowing us to explore the town comfortably. The staff’s hospitality truly made our stay an amazing experience.

United KingdomThe lobby was great and had cold barley tea and coffee. However I like milky coffee and the small milk pots each only had a couple drops. But this is just my personal coffee preferences.
The dinner and breakfast were beautifully prepared and a fun experience to eat. The onsen uses the same "cloudy" medicated water as the other famous onsen in the town. But is private to the hotel so often quiet or even empty. I've never felt so relaxed. The provided yukata were comfortable. The rooms and bed linens were clean. The host at reception was very friendly, helpful, and welcoming. Providing good conversation with her great English.

A marvellous ryokan that blends modern aesthetics with Japanese tradition. Breakfast and dinner is served in a pleasant dining room, and both are delicious and filling. The on-site onsen is open 24 hours and is clean and well maintained. Rooms are generously proportioned and very relaxing. Best of all is the staff, who are so friendly, diligent and considerate. Very good value for money.

The room was very big and incredibly clean a cozy. We added dinner on the first night and every dish was delicious!!!!! The onsen was also lovely and had the luck of being alone every time I went to take a dip. I’m looking forward to be back, our stay made our trip to Kusatsu a dreamy experience 💗

Hong KongThe owner Miki was very kind and helpful, gave us information we need before the trip and on arrival. The room was perfect to me, with great view of another traditional hotel covered with beautiful white snow. We ordered breakfast, which is very delicious and so rich that's good for a brunch 😋 We also tried dinner, very nice and even too much for me. 😆

Hong KongI can’t find a fault even if I tried.
Everything. The rooms are exceptionally comfortable and a wonderful sanctuary! Even though I was only in Kusatsu Onsen for one night, a large part of time was spent enjoying Watonoyu because its delight matched the amazing sights of this charming village. Watanoyu’s miracle Onsen (skin was so soft after!), the beautiful rooms, the excellent meals (a must do!) and the warm hospitality of Miki and her team has made this an unbeatable experience. Location wise it’s also perfect to experience all that Kusatsu Onsen has to offer.
