Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Good location, parking available, kitchen and utensils available. Clean shower and toilet, curtains around bunk beds. Old traditional house that's been converted which us very interesting to experience.

NetherlandsIt is somewhat far from the center, but if you know what the last busses are in the area it should definitely not be a problem.
Beautiful house, very kind host and nice area. Got some nice recommendations and the host does his best to make you feel at home, safe and be able to do what you’re looking for. The house is very traditional styled, had beautiful light coming in in the morning.

JapanNothing. Maybe additional curtain for the bed in mixed dorm would make it even better but it wasn't really an issue for me.
It is located in very "Karuizawa" kind of nice area with woods, bird singing and Onsen. They offer dinner/breakfast option if you wish or you can also walk 10-15mins to Hoshino area where you can find several places to eat / shop / Onsen (open for public with fee). The property itself was traditional style yet it was kept neat and cozy. I could see that the owner cares the details about the property as well as our comfortable stay.

JapanThat I couldn’t stay longer…
I really like the area where the house is located, which is in the middle of the woods, with an amazing sunlight exposition, a nice back yard, and a very typical internal design. Everything inside of the hostel is very well organized and clean, and the hoster, as well as the staff, are all extremely kind and helpful. It is also a good place to meet nice people from all the world, so all that made me feel at home, and I truly loved and cherish all the experiences I did there. 🙏

AustraliaThis place is perfect for a few days getaway in the mountains! Really lovely hosts (Yusuke and his wife) and beautifully done up building. Yusuke gave great itinerary suggestions and safety and transport tips, and hosted an epic bonfire for the guests too. Nice communal feel, well maintained and clean facilities. On-site restaurant as well with delicious food makes it easy to sort out dinner plans! Arigatō gozaimasu!

I got the best recommendations and a lovely conversation with the owner of the house! I also enjoyed talking with some guests. Everyone is friendly, the vibes are nice, and the house itself is very cute. It's surrounded by nature and big windows to enjoy it, the house is also 110 years old and very comfortable to sit in the morning.

JapanEverything was great.
Everything was wonderful about Koya Backpackers. 1) Our host Yusuke was very hospitable and welcoming. We enjoyed talking with him in the communal room. He gave us a lot of good information about the surrounding area. 2)The location in a forest near Hoshino is beautiful and very relaxing. Nearby you have three great onsen. We liked the Tonbo no Yu (トンボのゆう) best. On our second day we walked through the Wild Bird Sanctuary (野鳥の森). We plan to come back so that we explore the hiking trails. 3) The Koya Backpackers building itself is beautiful and atmospheric. It's a Taisho-period wooden house with beautiful woodwork and windows (see photos below). 4) The breakfast was delicious and nutritious (see photo). It was great value.

The breakfast and dinner provided were great, very healthy and fresh. The dorm room was super comfortable and cozy. The hostel is surrounded by trees and waking up there is one of the best experiences we had in Japan! Would 100% come back when visiting Japan again!

United KingdomIt's located far away from the station. Although this can be great if you're looking for a quiet spot, it's also inconvenient if you're looking to go to Shiraito waterfalls and hike the surrounding area as all buses start from the station.
Great place to explore Kariuzawa area. The hostel is cozy and a bus ride away from the train station on the outer bounds of town and surrounded by the forest. Great if you want to be away from all the noise, and wake up surrounded by green. There's a few onsen nearby, very convenient for after a full day of hiking. The staff/owner was incredibly friendly and he spent a good hour helping me create my itinerary for the day, suggesting hikes and times so that I do not miss the last bus back to town. Beds are comfortable and the place is kept clean.
