AustraliaSomething to know before you go - the hotel is on a hill and guests have to walk up a steep pathway to get to the entrance, which was difficult with our large suit cases. If you are staying at the hotel, it's a good idea to pack light and the hotel is probably not suitable for people who have mobility difficulties.
JAS Hotel is very well located for exploring Takayama. The staff were friendly and welcoming and our room was clean and comfortable. There are Male and Female onsen and the shower facilities are located within the onsen. The rooms and facilities at the hotel are fairly basic but it is excellent value for money.

JapanThe room was small and and the onsen facilities were dirty with mold in the changing rooms and bath area. The pillow was small and hard. Cheap materials used throughout. The sheets also smelled musty. I wouldn’t stay again.
The location was great, and also liked the ability to stay 3 people to one room.

SingaporeDislike: - hotel a long walk from Station and up on a hill, only access is on foot - carpark is extra ¥500, only 4 available lots (see pic) far from hotel and down the hill - furnishings and appliances are outdated but functional, carpets though clean has many stains - no ice machine, and vending machine is broken. nearest convenience store is 10 min walk down the hill across many dark streets - common wash basins-toilets = noisy at all times of the night as guests make use them eg footsteps, slamming doors eg suggest that hotel make a note about Quiet Rules after 10pm and stick to each door - no English Visitor Travel Guides/Brochures though most guests are likely foreigners - there was a heater at front desk, but no heaters in bath changing area, can be very cold in winter
Like: - good price point, especially when all other budget options near Station were fully booked (weekend) - very clean, quiet, warm (good working aircon) - onsen water baths with high ceiling and white bathroom tiling-bath stools etc, no smells, no mold sighted, very well-maintained, separate for men & women - common wash basins, washrooms clean - flexibility with room change upon check-in - helpful English-Japanese speaking staff

The location is perfect, we had nice view of the city. Our room was cozy and clean. The staff was very helpful and friendly. We ordered breakfast two times in japanese style ans it was absolutely amazing.

United StatesThis was by far the worst place I’ve stayed in Japan. There are no real showers, only the shower heads attached to the wall in the onsen area with no shower curtains or dividers. This meant that anyone that entered or used the onsen sat there and watched you shower, which was not disclosed ahead of time and was really uncomfortable. The pillows were dirty and minuscule, and filled with beads or beans of some sort instead of filling. The room was filthy and covered in stains which may have been mold. The lights in the room flickered constantly. There was 1 shared bathroom for each gender per floor which was not cleaned often, as there was period blood on the floor of the women’s toilet and it remained there the duration of our stay. We ended up leaving early as it was absolutely disgusting.

United StatesThe water in the women’s onsen could be a bit hotter.
Superb location in historic center! Great price, simple, clean with access to breakfast. You are greeted and assisted by the former owner who now manages the property. She is kind and solicitous of her guests’ needs and goes the extra mile to ensure their comfort. The walk up is a bit steep but we are 3 women in our 70s and managed. There are two onsens for guests. The one for women is bright and cheerful.

New ZealandThe size of the room was okay for three adults and not too much luggage, the beds comfy, extra wool blankets great, the pillow buckwheat? wasn't a problem for my neck, the location is central and an easy walk to the main attractions. I would not recommend it for anyone with lots of luggage as access is a steep path ,but manageable for our group, 68,69,78 years old. Dining room is old style charming breakfast and lunch available and was nice to be up high with a view over Takayama.
