How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewSuper cute house with comfortable & clean rooms! The value for money is amazing, especially considering the location.
Some guests are not so self aware regarding the noise so there could be quite some noise nuisances late in the evening.

A European style hostel, ‘Japanese-style’ being used as an excuse to not furnish. Bath towels for bed sheets for some reason. Paper thin walls.
Thank you very much for your feedback. We’d like to take this opportunity to clarify a little about 入山壮 (Iriyamaso). This property is not a European-style hostel but a traditional Japanese minshuku (family-run inn). It is owned by the Katos, a very sweet 96-year-old woman and her hardworking 101-year-old husband who still tends to their abundant vegetable garden! The always welcoming couple live in the traditional house next door. While we manage the place on their behalf, we also have our own properties in the area. We chose to continue supporting this minshuku because many family-run inns have sadly closed since COVID, as their owners are elderly. We are happy to help preserve this tradition, provide something more budget-friendly, and keep this warm, family-friendly style of accommodation available. Many of our guests have been returning for years, long before we started helping out, and it’s a pleasure to continue welcoming them. We have also added the property to this booking site to create an online presence and be able to provide the same service to even more guests and for the first time, international guests. Most minshiku do not have listings on international booking sites, largely because the platform is too complicated to use but also because international guests may be challenging to host due to potential misunderstandings. We are honored to be able to help out on all fronts. The style of furnishing is very traditional. Each tatami room is intentionally multi-functional: during the day, futons are stored away and the room becomes a living space with a low table and zabuton (floor cushions) for sitting. In the evening, futons are laid out for sleeping. For guests who prefer a softer bed, we always provide extra futons so they can be doubled up. This is the traditional way Japanese people live, and many guests enjoy experiencing it. Regarding the bedding, the “summer blanket” is what is commonly known in Japan as a towelket—a very large 100% cotton terry-cloth blanket. These are very common, lightweight yet heavier than a sheet, and some overseas guests even choose to purchase them locally at our personally recommended bedding shops but are also available at Muji stores throughout Japan. Professionally laundered bath towels, yukata (cotton kimono), and linen are also provided. Lastly, please note that all of our photos are current and up to date, so there should be no surprises upon arrival. While the style remains authentically Japanese, we have made small updates such as adding WiFi, additional toiletries, offering self-service filtered coffee, (traditionally, only tea was provided), and a custom made guidebook as well as some English signage (toilet, shower, and an explanation about the use of “towelket” and “how to futon”. We have tidied up some of the clutter that comes with nearly half a century of hosting but have tried to keep things as they were and according to the owners wishes. The owners personal paintings and drawings of the area also still decorate the walls. We hope this helps explain the cultural background and character of the inn. We appreciate all feedback and remain committed to sharing the traditional minshuku experience while providing some more modern comforts and warm hospitality. Makino Yasuo & Angela Kato family

Verified reviewThe location was a little far out but we had a car so it was okay. I thought the beds and rooms were nice. It is a simple accommodation.
We had some cockroach visitors in our room, which makes sense in the countryside but wasn’t too pleasant
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We’re sorry to hear about the cockroach you encountered. While we do our best to maintain a clean and comfortable environment, insects can occasionally appear in the summer months, especially in natural surroundings. We’ve already arranged for additional pest control to ensure this is addressed. Regarding your comment about the location, we were surprised as most guests find it very convenient. The beach is just a 5-10 minute walk away, there are several cafes and restaurants nearby, the nearest bus stop is within a 5-minute walk, and there’s even a 24-hour convenience store close by. We aim to offer a peaceful retreat that’s still well connected. We have also provided a custom guide book in English & Japanese full of our personal recommendations to help you get around. We truly value your feedback and wish you the best in your future travels.

Verified reviewThe accommodation was cosy and very comfortable. I love Japanese style rooms. The hosts were super lovely and helpful. They have prepared a book of recommended places to dine and visit at the venue. The accommodation is clean. It is tucked amidst the residential area, lots of nature - very serene and peaceful. Just right outside is a lovely garden. I will definitely return!

Verified reviewlocated nearby Ohama beach, in a quiet place outside the 'city' centre (it is a very rural area), surrounded by nature, jungle and gardens, a nice private house with a couple of rooms. Our room was very spacious with tatami/futons for an authentic Japanese experience, the public showers and toilets were very clean, the common kitchen and fridge came in handy. Very helpful and friendly staff.
the place is not easy to reach by public transport (we took a taxi from Shimoda for 1,600 Y), not too many restaurants nearby either so plan lunches and dinners well.
Thanks Kristof for taking the time to leave a review and especially comments! It’s very helpful to know how we can improve. Regarding public transport: It’s easy to reach us by bus (as well as taxi) from From Izukyu Shimoda Station to Kisami Bus Stop it takes 12 minutes, from there it is a 7 minute walk. Buses start early morning and are very regular until 8 pm. After 8 pm we recommend taking a taxi. Regarding places to eat. Some places are open for lunch and some for dinner but most are open for lunch and dinner. We have provided a custom made info book at the guesthouse with links to all the local restaurants (as well as other things to do and see). Within walking distance of Iriyamaso: “South Cafe, “On The Beach”, “Satomi”, “Maru Cafe”, “OliOli Cafe”, “NeedU”, “Tobiishi”, “The Surf Lodge”, “Tokyo Juice”, “Ohama Beach Terrace”, “Asit”, “85 Cafe”, “Yakuzen Kikomini”, and more as well as the 24 hour “Family Mart” which is about 5 minutes on foot. Bicycle rental / e-bikes are available and will get you to explore even further.

Verified reviewGood location near the ohama beach in Kisami and near a 24/7 FamilyMart, a bus stop to Shimoda and Minato but still very quiet and rural. The Ryugu Sea Cave and a Sand Ski Resort are in a walkable distance. Contains a big bathing area, and a washing mashine. Friendly and helpful housekeepers. Pretty affordable too.
The only light in the booked room is really bright.
Alex, We are happy to know you enjoyed your stay. We truly appreciate your feedback and have since added a small table light to all of the guest-rooms for late night chill vibes. Arigato!
