Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United StatesThe provided towels were small and thin. The best access is via taxi, as the property is located up a steep hill; however, it is a short ride to the nearest station.
We really liked the layout and amenities in our room - both modern and traditional. With high ceilings, two generously sized futon mattresses, a small desk and multiple places to sit, it felt spacious and comfortable. The highlight is definitely the open-air onsen on a private terrace with views of the trees. The temperature can easily be adjusted with the provided cold water tap. They provide yukata to wear as well. There are free drinks in the lobby, as well as a small gift shop. The meals were fantastic and included beef, fish, noodles, an assortment of small bites, and a flight of desserts. Breakfast was a traditional Japanese assortment. Everything was fresh and tasty and very filling. The staff even went above and beyond packing up some of our meal to go when our child needed to go back to the room in the middle of dinner.

South KoreaWe enjoyed the traditional breakfast and dinner but do think it could benefit from less fish and more meat or vegetable options.
The room was spacious, very clean and the perfect place to relax. We especially loved the private onsen attached to the room. The free, unlimited drinks was a nice touch.

SpainThe price is high, but that was true for all places in the area, not only this one. The location is not the most convenient but at least it is not too far from a train station (if you don't mind taking stairs).
The room was very nice and spacious, and the baths were good and not crowded when I went, they have an inside and an outside one. Food was amazing and definitely worth booking dinner and breakfast. The area is definitely worth one or two days.

We really enjoyed this place, I loved the location it was so pretty. We enjoyed going to Forest Adventure in the morning and then followed by booking a private onsen and lunch next door. Perfect location for family wanting to do this. The train station is gorgeous. Food was fantastic and lovely staff.

We loved staying here, the highlight of the stay was the breakfast and dinner service! To eat the traditional Japanese way was such a unique experience. To pay for a service like this in Australia would cost hundreds so overall the cost of the stay in our eyes was great value! We did a lot of walking, so to be able to retreat in the onsite onsen was so nice. Warning if you can’t walk much there, it is on a steep property, so to walk to the train station is a lot of stairs. Also consider this with luggage we recommend getting a taxi from the train station, it will drop you straight to your door.

SingaporeSmall matter but the room looked a little too modern so it didn't have the old-school ryokan charm we were looking for.
Booked a room with private onsen. The onsen faces the mountain so it felt like we were in nature while soaking. The kaiseki dinner was pretty good too. Not as exquisite as the higher-end ryokans but the food was nice, with free-flow alcohol.

SwitzerlandThe onse is on all the time. In the night the gentle bluster disturbed me, so I did not sleep well. But for others in the family it was not an issue.
Very clean big rooms. We had the one with private onse. Very good, tasty restaurant

United StatesI wish there was free water alongside the free soft drinks and alcohol. I was confused getting to the hotel since there’s 2 stations named Tonosawa. I took a bus to the hotel the first night and almost got hit by a car crossing the street lol. Use the local train station instead
Big spacious room with pretty views. The private open-air bath was clean and used constantly. The hotel lends yukatas to wear around the property and they’re cute and comfy. Food was delicious and super filling.

GermanyThe location is a bit remote, we found it easiest to get there by train - the station is about as far away as the next bus stop, but you don't have to walk up as many stairs and have a more even surface for rolling suitcases.
We had one of the onsen rooms and it was fabulous, very clean and new, exactly like shown in the pictures. The booked dinner was amazing as well, they were able to accommodate special wishes and it was a very luxurious experience.

Czech RepublicWe only regret not staying longer. Tonosawa Ichinoyu Shinkan is a fantastic place!
We booked one night in a room with a private bath. The experience was fantastic. We were welcomed by friendly staff at the reception, who explained everything in detail. You can pick up a yukata that you can wear at all times in the ryokan. The room was spacious, with two futon beds and a 3-tatami space for lounging after a bath. The terrace with the bath was closed from others' view by a wooden fence but you could still see the greenery nad trees. The dinner was superb. We ordered an extra sashimi set and it was almost too much to eat in one sitting. The signature grilled sea bream was delicious beyond telling. You can walk to the ryokan from Hakone-Yumoto station - although the hill may be a bit steep for some and it may be very difficult with a large luggage.

United KingdomThe room was a little dusty, but that was our only complaint.
The rooms are quite traditional and quaint and it is in a very quiet area. It is a little removed from the main area, but it is a 15 minute walk away from town or you can get the train up, and then it's a 5 minute walk We didn't try the public onsen, but had a private one in our room and it was lovely. We ended up having dinner there and it was an incredible meal for great value in our opinion

United StatesThe walk from the Tonosawa bus station to the hotel was arduous with baggage. It seems to me the hotel could put instructions how to get there from above so one could walk down instead of up.
The personal rotemburo on the room balcony was relaxing. The dinners were outstanding. The staff was very friendly.
