Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United StatesThe only “negative” was the wear and tear. It’s obviously a very old hotel which does not bother me because it’s still impeccably clean.
Staff was insanely friendly (despite us not speaking the same language). Amazing deal for what you pay— especially considering its proximity to the train and bus station. Public bath was very relaxing at the end of day and allowed me in despite my extensive tattoos. Super clean!!!!! I saw the staff vacuuming the BATH HOUSE!!!

JapanThey were no hook in the bathroom for the towels and we didn't were to put them after the shower.
It was a very good experience, to sleep in an old, traditional ryokan. The included access to the public bath was a good surprise as well. The staff was super friendly and quickly responded to all our requests.

SpainAccommodation in general needs a bit of refurbishment. Stains on ceiling in the bathroom area at the entrance of the room. The common bathroom and "Onzen" didn't open at the usual time the day we stayed, but only at 6 pm. Unfortunately we only found out about this after picking up our room key at 3pm. The plastic bathroom area doesn't match with the rest of the traditional interior
Very spacious room with traditional decor, nice entrance area and outside area near main door. Very well situated in the centre and near train and bus station. Very nice and welcoming staff. There were complimentary snacks, tea, soup provided in the room. They write your name in a board outside upon your arrival and you leave your shoes on a shoe rack in the entrance area where you change into slippers.

PeruExcellent quiet hotel. We stayed 2 nights there and they were nice to keep our luggage before and after the check-in and check-out time. The staff was super helpful and nice. Location is also great, very close to the train and bus station. Highly recommended!

New ZealandCommunication on where to park the car wasn't particularly clear prior to arrival. I had to run in to the reception while the driver was doubled-parked outside. The staff member encountered was kind and walked up to the parking area a few driveways along with us, but I feel it would have been better to know this ahead of time when I asked.
Our one night stay was comfortable and relaxing. The ryokan is a little dated, but this is somewhat part of the charm and you couldn't ask for more for the price. It is centrally located, with all the main sights and eateries within walking distance and our room was very quiet. The onsen lacked some ambience but it was fine for the one night, and I mostly had it to myself. On the whole, everything was clean, comfortable and we felt welcomed. Free parking near the property is a bonus.

United KingdomVery central for exploring Takayama. Friendly and helpful staff. Worth noting that staff let me use the communal bathing facilities with a tattoo which was very kind (posters say not allowed). Would highly recommend this gem.

ArgentinaThe only caviat I have is that I was expecting a tradional Ryokan (a big wooden japanese house) and was met with a building that has a wooden front and reception, so you can call it a "modern Ryokan" but it didnt ruin the experience
The beds are super confortable, the rooms are spacious and clean and it has nice ammenities they put some croissant on your room everyday and water bottles and the onsen is grear

NorwayThe walls might be a little thin, because I could sometimes hear other guests, but mainly if they had kids who were being loud.
It's very close to the train station, about 10 minutes of walking. The staff members are very polite and speak a decent amount of English, enough to understand what they mean, at least. The rooms are nice, enough space for me. The public bath was also quite nice, shampoo, body soap and conditioner is included, towels too. I also really liked that they write your name on the board outside the hotel entrance.

AustraliaA little hidden gem located only a 5 minute walk from the train/bus station and 10 minutes to the main sights of Takayama. Loved the traditional style of room and the fact guests names were included on a welcome board out the front of the hotel. Lots of great ramen restaurants and izakayas within a few minutes walk.

United KingdomIt's a pretty old building and has a very interesting smell. The public bath didn't have the best atmosphere.
The location was great, we had our name on the front wall to welcome us. The public bath allowed tattoos without stickers (I have too many to cover up).

AustraliaA fantastic place to stay. The rooms were ‘traditional’ Japanese style, and really peaceful. Really nicely arranged with a little seating area. Comfy beds. Most of the time, I was the only one in the onsen. Very handy location. Staff were lovely.

ArgentinaThe room was spacious and it was lovely. I loved how it was decorated. The staff were waiting for us, the whole experience was very personalized: my name was in the shoe locker and at the entrance. I highly recommend the location as well: close to the terminal and is also central. Takayama is a lovely place!

Single sex onsen was clean and hot. Apart from the handbasin in the room the onsen has the only shower facilities. I never had more than one other person there and mostly had it to myself. Lovely traditional room.
