Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

JapanThe only downfalls were that there is only one shower and that the bed is a traditional Japanese bed, a very thin matt on the floor but that's pretty common in Japan
when I first walked in the woman at the front desk gave me a map of the town and pointed out all of the things that I would need, explaining where the onsens are, the restaurants etc. It came with a pass to use an onsen for free that only locals and people at the hostel can use. They had towels for 250 yen and toothbrushes for cheap too. They had a kitchen with every single tool that you would need to cook pretty much anything. Check out was at 10:00 a.m. But they let you lock your bag there until 1. So I got to enjoy the town more without having to carry my stuff. I would highly recommend this place.

United StatesThe bathroom signs (man peeking over at woman?) besides the tastefulness being a bit lacking, it cast doubt I was using the right bathroom. Also the email address in use for the hostel is disconnected or at least unreliable.
Good location, provides budget access to beautiful onsen town. Clean and safe.

United KingdomThe staff are fantastic, it's a really great hostel that makes you feel at home. Great ideas of what to see and do. The main thing to note is that there is only one shower, although there are locals only onsen next door which you can use as part of staying at knot, also that if using the laundry it takes a lot longer than expected and is inside the bathroom so if people are showering you can't access it. There was an issue with the AC our first night, and our room made it to 70% humidity. Staff sorted it for the second night but was fairly uncomfortable for the first night.

JapanStaff is only there until 18pm which is really uncomfortable but you get what you pay for. They didn’t tell us that there is a shower in the hostel so we only found out about it existence after visiting what that call an Onsen. That place was hideous the bathtub is small building is old and mouldy and they literally didn’t have any showers ☠️ Yet apparently there are showers at this property and the location is literally onsen town so if you check it in advance you will find smth for your evening leisure. Also the beds were indeed clean and comfy the interior is new and pleasant and what is most important it doesn’t break the bank so I would stay there again and recommend this place to anyone travelling on a budget.
Although we only stayed for one night it was a good experience. Hostel is clean and they provide you with earplugs even though everyone there was quiet and respectful to each other. I loved the community and staff were friendly.

GermanyWhile the location is very central, the bus connections to the coast can be a bit of an obstacle. Although this was somewhat expected, it’s worth keeping in mind when planning your trip. If possible, I’d recommend renting a car to explore the area more freely, or simply enjoying what the town itself has to offer. The buses are not only slow over relatively short distances, but they also only run a few times a day, with some routes stopping in the afternoon. I traveled to the east coast, which was my main reason for visiting the Izu Peninsula. Despite taking the first bus in the morning and the last one in the afternoon, I still had to rush during my hike to ensure I didn’t miss the final bus back.
I had a fantastic stay at Hostel Knot. I rarely felt as much at home on my trip as I did here in this hostel, even though I only stayed for two nights. I think the main reason for this was the beautiful kitchen, which is particularly valuable for someone like me who does not want to go out for dinner every night on my long trip around Japan. Also, the hosts were super welcoming, and even wrote a card on the day of my departure. As for Shuzenji Onsen, what I loved most was its peaceful, off-the-beaten-path atmosphere. It gave me the chance to experience the authentic, slower pace of Japan, something that can be harder to come by in larger, more touristy cities. I highly recommend taking a walk outside the town towards the nearby farms. The farmers I encountered were so kind and open, starting conversations and sharing their insights. It truly felt like a slice of real Japanese life, and it was an experience I’ll remember.
