Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

AustraliaI didn’t mind the futon style beds but some Westerners may find the beds too firm.
Even though the property is a high-rise building , it manages to feel like an authentic Japanese inn. Superb location overlooking looking the river and the famous red Bridge. Breakfast was very good.

United StatesHonjin Hiranoya Annex is about a 12 minute walk from the JR station and located right near Old Town and the Saturday morning street markets. Great central location. Food and room was clean and comfortable. It's an older ryokan that has an 1980s feels but we liked that. We loved our corner view room and breakfast and dinner. Amazing local cuisine. The extra woman's spa was so relaxing.

SingaporeOn our first night's dinner, we felt as though we were being rushed to finish up. Also, even though we checked in just before 6pm, that felt a little rushed as well.
The room was excellent and comfortable with great views of the river. The location is perfect - it's just off the main stretch so the street it's on is not too crowded, and everything is still just a walk away. The rooftop onsen for the guys and relaxkura for the ladies is a major highlight. Staff were friendly and attentive and most spoke english, if that's an important factor.

SingaporeForeign staff is a plus if they are trained in Japanese hospitality. There was this 1 staff who assisted us with check in smelled horrible, like he didn’t shower for days. His breath stank too. And his attitude wasn’t as friendly. Regret to say that our check in experience wasn’t as pleasant as we had expected of Japanese hospitality. However, as the rest of our stay had been a fantastic one that it overshadowed the unpleasant 1st encounter.
Lovely ryokan that’s clean and comfortable. Service staff were all very friendly and the best part was the food. Daily breakfast and dinner were very luxurious and delicious! The spread takes up the entire table!

AustraliaWe would have loved an outside option for the women’s Onsen (like the men’s).
This is a lovely place & everything was as described. Attentive staff. Excellent location close to the river, red bridge and old town. We enjoyed the local delicacies included in the half board (dinner & breakfast). The onsen is great.

AustraliaWe absolutely enjoyed the entire ryokan experience. The Japanese dinner and breakfast were delicious. They provided us with yukata to wear during our stay. Our room was amazing, offering a stunning view of the river and Takayama Old Town. We also loved the onsen, and they have local beauty products available to use in the onsen. Additionally, the free shuttle bus was very convenient.

SingaporeThe 3rd dinner this time was abit disappointing. The fish dishes on the 3rd night were dry and slightly rough to taste. We also waited for quite long in between each dish even though we have finished our food. Experience would be better if the food were served more promptly. But overall the staff were polite and courteous.
The location is good. The stay was comfortable and food were good in general. We have been returning guest in Honjin Hiranoya Annex for 4 times and will still return in the future.

A Warm Welcome in Takayama: Honjin Hiranoya Annex Exceeds ExpectationsFrom our initial online communication, Honjin Hiranoya Annex in Takayama has consistently impressed us. Arriving on a chilly Thursday afternoon, we were warmly greeted with a shuttle pickup from JR Takayama Station. Upon arrival, we were treated to a soothing cup of green tea and a delightful local sweet at reception, followed by an efficient check-in.Our room and amenities were a pleasant surprise. We enjoyed the thoughtful touches, including socks, slippers, and a yukata for the onsen. The bathroom was well-stocked with cleanser, lotion, and toiletries. Breakfasts were served in a cozy private room on the second floor, featuring a delicious spread each morning—salad, eggs, sausage, and fruit, with a special apple jam treat. The staff's kindness extended beyond the hotel; they even offered us snow boots for a snowy outing and umbrellas. To be greeted on return with a towel at the door to dust the snow off our clothing was thoughtful. Our Western-style room with tatami mats and window screens was both comfortable and serene. The view from our balcony to snowed covered landscapes was spectacular. Honjin Hiranoya Annex's exudes a old time genuine hospitality, and their thoughtful amenities truly stand out for us. Dont get distracted by shinier hotels, instead look for service. Highly recommended! Thank you.

United StatesStaying here is like experiencing Japanese culture to the fullest. From the moment you get off the train to the moment you checkout you’re taken care of with the warmest hospitality and kindness. Both the standard room and the Japanese room were meticulously clean and spacious. The hotel has the best view of the city, and onsens were phenomenal. Would definitely recommend for anyone visiting Takayama

VietnamThe breakfast and dinner have to be book in advance and they are all served very early. When you come to the breakfast room, you understand why it has to be booked in advance: they put in so much work and care - it is definitely not a normal breakfast, it is almost like a performance and the Japanese breakfast is a must try. Yet, I still wish there is another simpler option (like a simple breakfast box) that we can take later to our room or for the kids.
Perfect location, overlooking the red bridge. The staff are very attentive and always smile. Shuttle pick up from the train station is much much appreciated, especially when we came - it was cold and snowy.

ThailandThe young man who take care for car parking. He didn't come to service at the parking area. Just see and wait inside the hotel, no offer to help for luggages. It seems to be difficult if we need our car when we inform him the time we need, his body language seems like very boring. Also when departure, never offer to help for luggages again. This dose not meet the standard of Honjin.
