Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

MacaoThe front door was locked during nights (from about 9) and didn’t open until 7am so there was inconvenience for i cannot went out. Breakfast needs to be improved. I also think there should be lagguage storage service after check out. I was told to leave immediately and no more parking after check out.
Excellent in nearly every aspects. Large rooms, quiet onsen, good environment.

United StatesWhat was not great was the fact that this place is miles away from anything, including train stations and restaurants that are open! All (but a couple) restaurants in town, in close proximity to the ryokan, all closed so early, where eating-out options were pretty slim. We took an 50-min bus ride from Mishima station and it was a short walk to the driveway to this place. But then, the walk up to the entrance was very difficult as it was up a steep hill. It was a tough climb with our suitcases. When we were leaving, we asked the staff to help us out and they drove us down the hill and to the bus stop. Which was very nice.
This Ryokan was really nice, the space was very comfortable and the staff is absolutely wonderful. If you want to experience a ryokan, this is a great place. You can have private or family onsen experience. We had our private onsen. The in-room breakfast experience was amazing. They staff are so lovely, the rooms are spacious and those would be the reasons I would return.

France-
An incredible experience on a path to better understand the Japanese way of life and culture. We truly appreciated the delicate attentions from the staff during our (too) short stay. We also enjoyed very much the private Onsen experience. And, last but not least, the dinner and breakfast were just wonderful.

United KingdomIt is up a steep road (but they are willing to come and pick you up from the 7/11 at the bottom of the hill).
This felt like an authentic ryokan experience. We had a private onsen which was amazing, the food they served was spectacular, 11 course evening meal. The staff were amazing too, they couldn’t have been more friendly and helpful. This is not the cheapest place to stay but an experience you’ll never forget!

United StatesNothing!
This place is beautiful and the staff and service are impeccable. It is peaceful and gorgeously decorated. The staff welcomed us with a drink in a beautiful, traditional room overlooking the lake. Our hostess made every effort to explain everything in English. After my daughter forgot her phone on the bus, the staff went out of their way to call the bus company and help us. Dinner and breakfast were absolute works of art. The private onsen in the room was beautiful. The location is also ideal: I got up early and walked over to Hakone shrine, which I had to myself. We also caught stunning views of Mount Fuji over the lake. Then when it was time to leave, the bus was just down the road. I cannot recommend this place enough.

IrelandOpted for a room with a private onsen, an absolute treat. The room was spacious, clean and had all amenities we needed. The staff were friendly, described all the breakfast items in English and were kind enough to give us a lift down to the local 7-11 on departure, even though we insisted it was fine! Highly recommend.

United StatesWe splurged to experience a traditional ryokan. The room was spacious and definitely large enough for the 4 adults in our group. The public and private onsen were wonderful. The hospitality the staff provided was top notch, especially appreciated that they picked us up from the 7-11. You could walk it from Motohakone, but there’s a pretty steep hill. It’s manageable without luggage.

United StatesBeautiful setting. The room was wonderful. Especially kind, patient and very pleasant staff. Our entire family was fitted with traditional Japanese Yukatas. The futons were very comfortable. The dinner and breakfast served in a private room were very special for my daughters. Very memorable. We had a private guide take us around Hakone. At the conclusion of the tour, the sighting boat dropped us off very close to our location. This made it very accessible.

AustraliaThe dinner and breakfast were possibly the most delicious and visually appealing meals of my life, even down to the details of the crockery used. The staff were very proficient English speakers and went above and beyond. The private spa was so beautiful, I spent a lot of time there. The view over the lake was lovely.

United StatesThat I only stayed one night
I loved Every single thing about this ryokan. Perfect splurge in every way. COZY futon. Private onsen, kind staff, amazing breakfast, stocked mini fridge (included in price). You will wish you could stay longer. Don’t make the mistake I did and get there later than check in time because you will want to stay as long as possible. Quite a journey to get there but worth it.

United StatesThere was nothing about the ryokan that I did not like. The doors do lock overnight from 10-6 I believe, but this is for the safety of guests. In addition, you can request to leave during this time if you desire.
From the moment we arrived, we felt very welcomed and sensed the unparalleled hospitality of the Japanese culture. The staff went above and beyond to accommodate us and ensure our stay was the best that it could be. Our spaces were very clean and we were provided with everything in our room. There was absolutely no reason for leaving the ryokan because everything was provided in our room including refreshments, alcoholic beverages, towels, and food. The location was unbeatable with views of the lake and our ryokan was perfect temperature. We really really enjoyed this experience. This was most definitely our highlight of Japan and possibly one of the most enjoyable experiences I have ever had in my life!
