Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

AustraliaNothing. Probably the only negative is that we cannot stay for a few more nights.
The service by the staff is top rated and made us feel very special. The facilities in the room is second to none and had extras (eg moisturizers for after onsen) which we did not expect. It was a high quality onsen ryokan on a reasonable price. The view from the room was excellent and the beds were very comfortable.

United StatesOur stay in Hakone Kyuan was amazing! Authentic, with attention and care in every detail. The food was excellent, we had the Kaiseki dinner and breakfast both nights and it was one of the bests we had in all of our trip in Japan! The manager was such a sweet and caring man. Couldn’t recommend this place more :)

United StatesOnsens are HOT! Make sure you are not sensitive to heat. You can use the coldish water to cool it down but it takes quite a while. Additionally, make sure to close the window in the private Onsen before night comes because there are plenty of flying bugs that will come in - though they die from the heat after a while haha.
The view was so nice, it really felt like authentic Japanese culture. The private Onsen was great, but the highlight of the trip was the delicious food! The room was very large, we got two twin rooms with a mountain view for a group of 8 people and it was quite big, with each room having 2 twin beds and space for 2 very comfortable futons. The rooms were very cute and had amazing and peaceful views. Additionally, the inn provided Yukatas and sleeping robes (can call the front desk for bigger sizes if needed) which we really enjoyed. We could also use another 'public' Onsen (which was technically private for us) if needed. I also liked how the toilet in the room was equipped with a modern bidet (with a dryer feature)!

United StatesA little expensive. But worth is.
Amazing hotel. Small and awesome view. And beautiful private onsens in our rooms great for the kids as they are private. Amazing for parents since the view is great. Kaseiki dinner was awesome. And short location to Gora. Just took a taxi. It bad as we never went into town anyways.

United StatesNothing!
It was the perfect combination of luxury and rustic Japanese mountain charm. Our tatami room with Mountain View and open air onsen was fantastic. We are a family of 4 and it was plenty of space. The food was exceptional and seafood was so fresh! Even the kids meal (for our 8 year old son) was fantastic! They provide yukatas for everyone to wear to dinner. It was a lovely experience.

United StatesThat we only stayed one night.
Staff make you feel very well taken care of. Everyone is very kind, polite and trying to help. The resort is very calming and our room was beautiful. The private hot spring was actual mountain spring water and was very very hot. The included kaiseki was beautifully prepared and we enjoyed every course.

United KingdomThere was no transportation provided when we arrived, and getting there was a bit of an adventure. Thankfully, we managed to get an Uber.
This was our first stay at a traditional Japanese inn, and it exceeded all expectations. The private bath was absolutely perfect and the setting couldn't have been more serene. Both dinner and breakfast were excellent. My pescetarian diet was almost perfectly accommodated, and every dish was beautifully presented and delicious. The staff went above and beyond to make us feel welcome, and despite the language barrier, they were incredibly helpful and patient with us throughout our stay. The entire experience felt authentically Japanese while being completely comfortable for first-time visitors like ourselves.

CanadaAs others have mentioned, it was a little difficult to get to the property. They weren't able to provide a shuttle so we walked from what we thought was the closest bus station.
It was our only ryokan/onsen experience, and they really made it feel special: everything from the check-in procedure, to the rooms (and provided traditional clothing - even for our 2-year old) to the dinner, beds, and breakfast.

AustraliaIt would’ve been nice if the wood on my onsen bath didn’t have algae, but it wasn’t a big deal since it’s bound to happen due to the contact with constant moisture.
The ryokan is traditional with a clear focus on quality of experience. Kaiseki experience was amazing as the chef seemed highly observant on our eating preferences. Nothing was overdone and I respected and admired the charm of this place. I recommend this place for those who deeply appreciate Japanese hospitality and culture. The staff were some of the loveliest I’ve ever met. Akane was bubbliest and kindest staff who recommended us to take the cable car to explore Hakone. We had great fun as we discovered lake ashi and the swan boats, so thank you Akane!

SpainRelaxing, private, quiet, traditional Japanese (maybe they are not fluent in english but they communicate just fine!!) I loved its authenticity. The staff was extremely welcoming from the very beginning I couldn’t ask for more. I wish I had stayed 1 more day!! Usually when you travel to other countries you barely spend time at the hotel, but this hotel was so good that I barely left the property.

United KingdomNothing. Just felt they needed more staff maybe.
An amazing experience from start to finish. We were advised beforehand that they couldn’t store luggage so we travelled light and arrived only 15 minutes before check in. The private onsen was quite an experience along with the Kaiseki dining for two nights. Staff were amazing and helpful with suggestions and booking a taxi for our departure.

United Statesthe place was beautiful but a little dated. the beds were a little soft. because our adult children slept on the tatami mats, which was the dining area, which was the main living area, the overall space we had for the 4 of us was tight. there were only 2 armchairs and an outside lounge to sit on for the 4 of us. one could sit at the dining table (on the tatami mats) but this was not comfortable. we found that the space for hanging for the 4 of us was really limited.
location and views were beautiful. food was delicious, both dinner and breakfast. Hakone is a difficult place to get around, taxi's are few and far between.
