Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Czech RepublicThe futon was quite thin, but maybe it's about getting used to it.
Great ambience, very quiet and calm atmosphere. Beautiful outside onsen. The private (paid) onsen was also very nice. And the views from the baths into the valley and up to the mountains are amazing!

SpainThe location is uphill, and if you don’t take a taxi or the shuttle bus, it’s tough. Once you’re at the hotel, if you want to go down to the main street for sightseeing, you’ll have to climb back up again, and in summer you’ll end up drenched in sweat. They don’t offer transportation service for that.
Everything in the hotel was amazing. It truly felt like a Japanese experience 🙌🏻. The staff was very kind 😊

Israelnot really a downside as we were warned about the climb up the road to the hotel, but we risked it anyways. don’t be stupid like us and just take the shuttle bus :)
room was clean and private, the tatami floors are lovely and the yukata you get is super soft and comfortable. we rented out the private onsen for 45 minutes and it was very soothing and relaxing.

AustraliaLocation a bit far from the activities we wanted to do in the area which we didn’t realise until we arrived. Not a problem with the hotel more a tip for travelers that there aren’t a lot of taxis in Hakone so if you want one to get to the station with bags then book it when you arrive.
Beautiful private and public onsen, the dinner and breakfast were delicious and a fun experience, very friendly staff, bag storage available, comfy bed, love the kimonos provided.

AustraliaNothing!
This place is fantastic! The staff are polite and can’t do enough for you. The entire hotel is spotless and the restaurant dinner was to die for. The public onsen was perfect for my morning/night bath, and the private onsen was lovely for something a little more relaxing and quiet. The local area is stunning. A map is provided in the room so we went for a walk to check out the local waterfalls, river and walk part of the Old Tokaido Highway (dating back to 17th century). If you want to experience authentic Japanese culture and hospitality in a truly stunning area of Japan rich in history - this is the place!

Australiavery expensive to stay here for what you get, I didn't enjoy the breakfast but that's because I'm western and I can't eat fish, vegetables and tofu for breakfast. Also it's a bit of a walk and uphill from train station!
lovely quiet and clean. Loved the onsen outside so nice with the cold night air, also really enjoyed the included dinner. Loved the free beers in the room and view outside our window.

AustriaThere was not one thing we did not Like.
The room was very comfortable with an amazing view into the trees. The Personal was very helpful and nice the whole time. There is one public onsen bath in the Hotel for everyone to use and one private onsen, which can be booked for 45minutes. We had the room with a private onsen bath on the balkony. We really enjoyed the relaxing hot water with the stunning view into the Woods. For smokers there is an ash tray at the entrance.

BelgiumThe hotel is very nicely renovated! You can see in the original communal onsen the structure of the original building and that part is a little outdated. It was very clean and nice but a little below the level of the rest of the hotel.
Dinner, kaiseki style, was very good and the staff was superfriendly. My partner is allergic to seafood and they adjusted the menu very well (you should inform them in advance). Japanese breakfast was super. Private bath on the terras was great. The rooftop onsen was very nice for private use. Ample open spots to book and use it. The hotel is a 15/20 min walk from Hakone station. In a quiet street. From the rooms you can here the river below. Peaceful feeling.

RussiaIt was challenging to sleep on Japanese-style futons and sit on the floor. But that’s just our European habits. This hotel has checkout issues for everyone. There are no taxis, and buses around that time are completely full with no available seats. I recommend the hotel keep reserve cars or buses for such situations. All guests are willing to pay for this service.
An authentic Japanese-style hotel. It is quite old but very clean. The ryokan is nice. The location is good. I’d like to express gratitude to the chef who provided us with wonderful dinners and breakfasts for two days, and to the staff member Arunita, who introduced us to Japanese cuisine.

SingaporeEquality needs improvement. Eastern tourists should be treated similarly as the westerners when it comes to introduction and explanation on meal dishes using English which is an international language. A well English-spoken staff was explaining every dishes of the meal to the western tourists and my wife and I were assigned with a staff who knows little English. She has performed well in her service but we can’t communicate our needs to her due to language barrier.
Did not have to face with tour groups or family with children. English-speaking staff at the reception did helped a lot. Beautiful and zen lounge.

CanadaIt was my first time staying in a Ryukan so I was excited. It was nice overall but somehow I was thinking it would be better for the price. The location was a bit hard to get to because you have to walk uphill for about 15mins. I have a foot injury so that's why it was hard otherwise it wouldn't be a problem. We tried both the private onsen and public onsen. I liked the public one better. Bigger and better view. The room was cool because it was Japanese style and the food was Japanese too so I liked that. Would have been nice if they prepared the bed during dinner. Overall it was good.
