Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Everything. Great rooms, comfortable futons, lovely tatamis. Very good breakfast. The host was very helpful and shared with us a few tips what is worth checking in the area. We followed the advice and were very pleased with all recommendations. I wish we could stay there longer, as the place is really outstanding. You can feel spirituality in the air. The Hachi Hachi guest house is a perfect base to explore the area.

GermanyThe only back draws are that the showers, toilets and washbasins are located on a different floor to the bedrooms. Secondly, the placement of the washbasins does not allow for much privacy.
Cozy guesthouse and good breakfast available (against payment). Bright and clean room. Helpful guesthouse owner. Good social vibe.

FranceNothing! (Perhaps heavy footed people will have to make an effort to move about quietly in Japanese slippers, especially climbing up and down the stairs leading to the rooms!)
Staying 3 nights in a typical Japanese house with the ever resourceful Nori and his wife and little girl was a delightful experience! The house is traditional in spirit but modern in conception, recently renovated. Everything functions smoothly, from the silent, gliding wall partitions everywhere to the dimming of the lights at the slightest touch. And everything is spotlessly clean. We guests automatically moved about silently and spoke in low voices...even the 6 month old baby guest among us hardly ever whimpered or made his presence felt! It was so peaceful and quiet.

ItalyThis guest house has been a perfect alternative to the expensive shukubos. I did the night tour of Okunoin and since I didn't have a curfew, like people staying in shukubos, after the tour I could spent some more time enjoying the atmosphere and return without rushing. Welcoming and helpful owner that gave me some useful tips about what ceremonies I can attend in Koyasan. The room, the shared bathroom and the common area were very clean. The FamilyMart store (Open until 23:00) is 5 minutes walk.

United StatesNothing. Everything was great.
Nori was an excellent host. He spoke the best English I have encountered on my trip so far. He gave me tips on what to see and do and where to eat. He even gave me tips on my next destination, Kyoto, because he lived there for a few years. He helped me figure out the timing of my bus and cable car for departure. The guest house and my room were spotlessly clean. The bathrooms and showers were great. The breakfast I got was fantastic; it's probably the best I've had in Japan. I could control the temperature and lighting in my room. It was quiet and comfortable. There was plenty of space for me to lay out my luggage on the floor. The location was convenient to see the sights that were illuminated at night. There's a nearby bus stop.

SwitzerlandThe place was really convenient for all activities in this area. The host was very professional and welcoming. Everything was super clean and the house was quiet to sleep at night. I highly recommend to take the breakfast it as a blast for 1000 yens only. The most comfortable futon + pillow I've been on of the trip. It was so soft that I fell asleep immediately.

AustraliaNari was such an incredible host, everything was clean and he was very knowedgeable about the whole area of Koyasan and gave excellent recommendations. He is so kind and the rooms are so beautiful. Everything is super clean and cleaned multiple times daily. I came in very late on the first night and he was so helpful in trying to help me find out how to get there the best way. The only thing I regret is that I didn't stay there three nights instead of the two. I loved Hachi Hachi and would recommend everyone to go there.

FinlandLoved the location - a walking distance away from the main areas you probably want to explore. Also easy to take a bus to Okuno in, or even walk there (about 40-50min when walking). The room was superb, exactly as described. The host was super helpful and kind, helped me to get local experiences I couldn’t find info easily online about. Highly recommend this place - thanks again!!
