One of my favorite stays during my Japan trip. Matsumoto is such a beautiful city, very communal and scenic. I loved my stay at Guesthouse Azumaya. The owner, Shotaro, is such a gent and very fun to talk to. He knows all the best spots around the area and was very accommodating. A special shoutout to Nozomi also, he is a very sweet boy and looks after the guests well. The hostel has the cheapest washing machine from any other hostel I've visited, and it runs completely off an honorary system whereby you put 100 yen into a coin box. There's shampoo, body wash and conditioner stocked in the shower, there's also a good hairdryer, all free of charge. The beds are comfortable and the rooms are just the right size to store all your belongings. The wifi is fast and reliable, perfect for any digital nomads. I felt very comfortable and welcomed, I would definitely stay here again.

A long walk from the station. The rooms get hot and humid. Thought one of the staff was a visitor because he basically was too busy listening to music and his phone to help.No dryer on-site but is only a 10 min walk away.

Located near some shopping and the castle (but a bit of a walk from the station and some other sights). One of the staff was very friendly (while another was not at all). Comfortable communal space and beds.

The sleeping area was nice and air conditioned well, the whole place was kept immaculately (especially that lovely tatami lounge!), the staff was very friendly and the price was great. Plus you're right next to the historic streets and the castle. Excellent hostel!

One of the hosts picked up Satie's Gynopedies way too quickly, made me feel like a slow learner! The facilities could use a few minor upgrades on the small things and you can't always choose your bunk buddies, but for the price I regret even mentioning it.

Extremely friendly staff and social home vibes. Visitors of their lives and the homes art past breezed through the communal areas to just hang out Excellent local area recommendations and laid back style. Great value. Lots of little charm and unique items everywhere that makes the place feel homely. And they rearrange people in the rooms to try and give the most space to everyone, one night I even had a room to myself. It's location is also great, reasonable walk of the station but even closer to the major day and night attractions of Matsumoto. Great food, walks and sights nearby. I booked mid June and had my first ever sighting of fireflies, just walked up the river 50m next to the accommodation.

From the moment I stepped into the guesthouse, I immediately felt at home. The interior reminded me of an old Japanese grandmother’s house – warm, nostalgic, and full of charm. There was something incredibly comforting about the atmosphere, as if I had stepped back in time into a place filled with stories and quiet beauty. The staff were incredibly helpful right from the start. They enthusiastically shared detailed hiking routes, local tips on must-see spots, and great restaurant recommendations around Matsumoto. Their kindness and local knowledge really helped shape my trip in the best way possible. We ended up sharing meals together and having beautiful conversations that turn strangers into friends. It’s a memory I’ll treasure forever. I can’t recommend this place enough if you’re looking for a stay that’s not only comfortable but genuinely meaningful.

The owner was so friendly! He waited for us to arrive and showed us around. He gave us great recommendations on where to eat. It was super cosy and warm and SO clean, we loved it! I didn't want to get out of bed. It was super close to the bus station like a 15 minute walk which was perfect for our bus to Kamikochi. Honestly I wish we had longer here. Free tea and coffee too.

The location is amazing, a short walk to all the things I wanted to do. Shotaro is lovely and I got to have a little play of their piano which was a treat. Great restaurant recommendations as well...
