Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

LuxembourgNot only is the guest house absolutely beautiful, but the host was extremely helpful and hospitable which made this stay the best we had during our Japan trip. He drove us to Magome so that we managed to complete the Nakasendo trail just in time before the last bus departed. He also made a dinner reservation for us and drove us to an Onigiri restaurant for breakfast. We had a great stay!

Czech RepublicThis guest house is a miracle and fabulous experience, especially for those who want to experience traditional Japanese house. The hosts are very nice people. They welcomed our family and also offered us a ride to Magome for our Nakashendo walk. The house is 120 years old and an example of japanese carpenters’ craftmenship. We all slept on very comfortable futons. Owner Assi-san also offered us a ride in the morning to Onigiri restaurant to buy a breakfast. One of our best stays in Japan.

AustraliaA lovely old traditional house, beautifully renovated. Heaps of space, really comfortable with a great location in the town. The host is really friendly and helpful and made our stay very enjoyable. He helped us out with transport and food recommendations, organised luggage transfer for us and dropped us where we needed to be on our last day. A great bonus was the record player and a few records to spin in the evening!

IsraelWe had the full house to ourselves. The host was super friendly and waited for us when we arrived. The house has a beautiful zen garden, as well as a comfortable and pleasant kitchen and 2 living rooms. We slept on tatamis and very comfortable futons and the entire stay was wonderful. Our host recommended a great restaurant not far from the house that , too, was very special and memorable. Overall - we really enjoyed the stay!!

United StatesThe property is absolutely gorgeous, the home has been beautifully restored by the wonderful owner. The views out the back windows overlooking the lush garden and canyon bellow are breathtaking, especially with a hot cup of coffee at sunrise. The Beds and bedding were very comfortable and the traditional style bathroom with deep soaking tub was the respite we needed after a long day hiking the old Nakasendo trail. The property owner was so kind meeting us and showing us around and getting to know us a bit, he speaks great english, he also helped us find great dinner spot in a town with few options. The guesthouse is equipped with a record player and cd player with a wonderful variety of musical styles and genres. Needless to say we loved our stay and look forward to staying again when we come back to do the entire length of the Nakasendo trail.

GermanyWell... That was an amazing stay guys! Atsushi was so nice and welcoming, speaking great English, and he drove me to Magome - the beginning of the trail. The house is a beautiful traditional house, very minimalistic and pleasant. Everything was so beautiful and comfortable! One thing you need to mind though - the village is very small, and there's nothing to do in the evening. Even finding open restaurants for dinner after 7pm is quite impossible

SwitzerlandWe had the whole house for ourselves. Shigi is a traditional Japanese house. The owner gave us a lift to the supermarket, where we bought our dinner. The village is very small and there didn't seem to be any restaurant that suited us, so dinner at home was perfect.

United StatesOwner was very nice and made sure my stay was exceptional. He even made a reservation at a local restaurant for me because they were going to close soon and I hadn't had dinner yet. I would highly recommend staying here if you're hiking the nakasendo or just in the area.

United KingdomWe went in the winter and it was freezing cold inside because it isn’t insulated at all. You have to have a gas heater or AC on at all times and they weren’t super reliable. In the summer I imagine it’s perfect but this place isn’t really geared up for winter stays yet. I’m sure Assi san will work on this soon though.
It is absolutely beautiful and the owner is a lovely man who did us a lot of favours

United StatesAssi-san was very helpful and accommodating, offering to drop me off at the lower entrance of Magomejuku. The guesthouse was large and clean, with a very nice view of Sakashita. The wind was blowing quite strongly and the temperature at night was around freezing, so the hallways were rather cold and the night a bit loud at times, but should be expected in a renovated traditional house. The bedroom was warm, and the futon and comforter were of exceptional quality, I slept very well despite the wind. There is a supermarket a short walk away, and a well stocked kitchen if you choose to cook. I highly recommend staying at Guesthouse SHIGI, particularly if you intend to visit Magomejuku or Tsumagojuku and hike that part of the Nakasendo trail.

AustraliaThis place was lovely! I felt so lucky to be able to stay in such a beautifully maintained, traditional Japanese style house. Assi was a great host, he has gone to the trouble to provide all the little touches around the house and the local information a guest might need. The place is very quiet but a very short walk from the train station and some food options too.

The stay was the highlight of the trip. Please don't think twice while booking this stay. It's just wonderful . We wish we had more time to spend at this wonderful gem of a place. And the host is very kind and helpful too and speaks good English. He even dropped us at magome where we started the trail. He has good collection of music too at his place which we were able to enjoy. We loved everything about this little village and our short stay. If you wanna have a glimpse of the place I would be uploading a video soon as an attestation of how beautiful the place is - please check guesthouse shigi in YouTube .

We chose this property for its convenient access to Tsukechi and Yumori. Sakashita and the property are located near the main road, making it easy to find. Although we initially reserved one room, we were pleasantly surprised to have access to the entire house. It’s a lovely traditional home—old yet well-maintained. The host was wonderful and incredibly friendly. Overall, everything was great, and we had a delightful stay.

United KingdomThere were no problems with our stay.
Our host, Assi, was waiting for us at the property and was very accommodating. Speaking very good English and showing us all the facilities of this very beautifully restored traditional Japanese house. The house is made very comfortable with excellent home-style kitchen and living room, both supplied with high quality vinyl and CD sound systems. He suggested an excellent restaurant run by a man and his wife that was equally homely and with very good food. There is also a very cool vinyl cafe close-by that would not be out of place in Brooklyn New York. We were very nicely surprised by our stay at Guesthouse SHIGI and would recommend anyone detours a few minutes from the Nakasendo Trail to experience something truly special.

CanadaThis is a beautiful house and we were lucky to have it all to ourselves. It's in a great location, close to restaurants, a grocery store, and bakery. We loved spending time in the kitchen and dining room overlooking a traditional Japanese garden. The owner, Assi, was very quick to respond and so thoughtful. He drove us to Magome and back, and he lent us his wrench set for one of our bicycles which we were able to store securely inside the property. This was a very comfortable and memorable stay. Thanks so much!
