Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

NetherlandsVery beautiful guesthouse, very comfortable room and common spaces. We loved the neighborhood, its restaurants and Onsen, and the fact that it is a bit away from the busy touristic part of the city, but still very well connected with several bus stops

United StatesAs warned in the description, walls are very thin so sometimes noise can be an issue. However, there are quiet hours and while I was there, people respected that.
In 2017 I stayed in the sister guesthouse, Koiya and loved it. Returning to Kyoto in 2025, I knew I wanted a similar experience. The staff are extremely sweet people and the room was very clean. Love the Japanese garden which is nice to sit and stare into while having tea.

The house is astonishing, really beautiful and the room of 3 people that we got was really big. The staff was really nice and had a lot of services like bike rental or kimono rental.

AustraliaWe loved staying there. The atmosphere of its place was amazing (very traditional & historical), delicious Japanese traditional breakfast, and the twin economy room was spacious. All the staff were welcoming and helpful. It's a bit of a trip from Kyoto station if you take a bus, but easy to get to if you take the train & taxi. It's a great location and walkable to Golden Temple and nearby temples. Lots of good restaurants & cafes around as well as convenience stores, supermarket & chemists. I would definitely love to stay there again and will highly recommend it to others.

SwitzerlandThere’s only one women’s toilet, one bathroom for all genders which is okay. But they could be cleaner, especially the toilet. The washing basin is not located in the toilets. The toilet and bathroom are outside which is a bit uncomfortable in cold weather.
The staff are amazing. They are so kind and helpful. They helped us with our luggage delivery. We had the economy twin room located outside the main building in the back yard. This made it very private and isolated with noise from neighbours. The room was a bit cold but well equipped with electric blanket and air conditioning. It was an old and authentic building reminding of Kyoto in the old time. The sheets and towels were fresh and clean.

United KingdomOnly one shower is a bit of a challenge. We managed fine but just to be aware. Of course you can use nearby onsen if you prefer. 3 toilets are enough.
Lovely guesthouse. Location is good as it’s quiet and away from the crowds. There are lots of fantastic local restaurants/cafes nearby and an onsen. Pretty close to some big attractions like the Golden Pavillion. Not too far from everything else with easy bus connections. The vibe here is lovely with friendly staff. Peaceful garden area. Tasty Japanese breakfast. The deluxe room we stayed in was beautiful with loads of space.

United KingdomI initially took issue with a shared washroom/bathroom BUT there was always ample time between guests to use them and they were cleaned spotless so not really a issue at all.
This little gem of a place was not what I expected. Tucked away in a street it looks unasuming but inside it is a very well kept traditional guest house. Futon beds in rooms, garden in shared space and the staff were so helpful and polite. The shared washroom was kept clean and restocked, the rooms where surprisingly quiet and the whole overall experience was pleasant and comfortable. 😁

Australia-
This was such a lovely stay! The staff were so helpful and kind. It was a more traditional style guesthouse with a shared bathroom, breakfast included. There was an onsen close by and the golden temple is a short bike ride away - you can hire bikes here too.

SlovakiaThe owners and the staff are truly amazing! Very friendly and helpful. The place has a unique vibe. The house is a beautiful old machiya. It means thin walls, so you can hear the street and your neighbors, if not well behaved. We did not mind at all, since we understood what a machiya is like. It is part of its charm. For us the location was perfect. We liked this neighborhood of Kyoto. And there is a great ramen shop nearby, which isn't in their booklet ;)

United KingdomI can’t think of anything…
Such a beautiful and quite space! We loved the Japanese architecture with the little garden inside the house. The room was more spacious than expected and very cosy - I don’t think the pictures do that place any justice. The host was also very kind and helpful. The neighborhood is residential and quiet, however you have shops, cafés, restaurants nearby. The bus stop to the center is also very close…
