How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewGreat location - volcano views from bed!!! - or there would be if we didn’t have cloud. Close to the ferry port. Clean and comfortable and very friendly service.
I would have LOVED one lamp in the main room which could be reached from the bed. The lighting as a little harsh. But that is my only complaint! A lovely stay.

Verified reviewFantastic host and amazing service! I needed some help making a phone call to my next hotel but I didn’t have the ability to phone Japanese numbers. I asked the host who lives in the building to help me out, and she went above and beyond to help me sort out my next hotel stay which I was having issues with! She phoned them for me, helped me arrange a pickup for the station, and waited for a call back the next day to help me add on dinner options. I wouldn’t have been able to do this without her. We also had some fab conversations and I really enjoyed chatting with her (I speak some Japanese). She was so lovely I would 100% stay here again!! Regarding the property: Gorgeous views of the volcano, amazing location as it’s super close to the ferry port for trips to sakurajima or yakushima, but also very close to the downtown shopping and restaurant district, and a short walk to the team so easy access from the train station! Not only that but it’s right next to a konbini so very convenient for shopping and I was able to do some laundry in the apartment too. The shower and bath room was great too! I slept super well on the bed.
Nothing - it was amazing

Verified reviewProximity to the ferry, view of Sakurajima
I was supposed to self-check in, but there was no key in the letterbox as the mother had forgotten to put it there!!! C'mon, how can this happen?? Took some time to communicate this with the daughter via e-mail and then I was sent a door code. The mother came late in the afternoon to collect the money and said sorry sorry without really meaning it, I had been in Japan for some time to know what real apology looks like. The worst experience in Japan. Other that that, the room is very basic and noisy. Nearby hotels are much better value.

Small, basic and very very noisy location next to busy rd. For 1 night if you are desperate or leaving very early in the morning. I stupidly booked it for 3 nights

Verified reviewI took the option of an apartment with a view of Sakurajima, and Gracias delivered. You can literally sit on the balcony (chairs were provided) and watch the clouds lazily drift past the unwavering volcano. The apartment is just a 5-10 minute walk from the jet-foil terminal headed for Yakushima, so this is a great place to stay if you're coming from there or heading there in the morning. I went alone, but the room would have easily been comfortable enough for two. Closest convenience store (FamilyMart) is just a few minutes' walk away. If you're taking the bus from Kagoshima airport, the closest stop (Tenmonkan) will be about a 15 minute walk. The property is managed by a kind and friendly lady that stays in one of the apartments in the building. She speaks good English, and took the trouble to check on me and made sure I had everything I need.
The only down-side of this place I can think of was that it was a bit pricier compared to some of the hotels around the area. However, for the Sakurajima-facing view and the proximity to the ferry terminal, I would say it was worth it.

Verified reviewThe B&B has a great location facing Sakurajima volcano, and the facilities are well-equipped. I stayed for three nights and was provided with two bath towels. I’ve stayed at many apartments hotel in Japan where cleaning wasn’t required, but towels were always fully prepared. Perhaps I wasn’t careful enough, but I was only informed upon arrival that payment had to be made in cash. It would have been better if this had been mentioned in the email beforehand, as I didn’t have that much cash with me. I eventually solved the issue by withdrawing money from a 7-Eleven ATM.

Verified reviewLocation is excellent, very close to ferry terminals which is a good thing in Kagoshima as going to Sakurajima across the bay at some point is a must. It's also close to the town centre, 5 minute walk to the main streets basically. And you get that great view off the balcony of Sakurajima across the bay, good thing to wake up to.
The only issue at all really is that it's located right on a main road, so it's pretty noisy with traffic at times. Doesn't bother me, but if you're a light sleeper then ear plugs would be recommended I would think.

Verified reviewI was particularly happy with the well equipped small kitchen, the bath, the cleanliness and the very friendly host, Michiko-san. Thank you for everything!
*The road noise was quite extreme, luckily I had read the reviews and brought earplugs. *The bed was too hard. *I did not like that I did not get a reply when contacting the property via mail before my stay, even though I wrote in understandable Japanese.

Verified reviewGreat location, less than a ten-minute walk from the Sakurajima Ferry port. A Family Mart and 7-11 are just right around the corner, and Tenmonkan is full of places to eat about ten minutes away. You have a great view of Sakurajima from the balcony. A big refrigerator, a very handy microwave, and lots of kitchen utensils. Quite roomy and very inexpensive.
Very slow WiFi. A couple of emails I sent were not delivered. Rather noisy. Traffic on the road in front is pretty constant, and noise leaks through the sliding doors even when they’re closed. The stove and washer are handy, but could be confusing if you can’t read Japanese. English instructions would be helpful.

Verified reviewPerfect situation. 10 minutes walk to Kagoshima's shopping district & tram system. 10 minutes walk to the Sakurajima ferry terminal. Seafront park directly opposite the guest house. Choose the Sakurajima view apartment and enjoy watching the volcano puff away whilst enjoying your breakfast. Check out the Picasso bakery next door. Yum. Your host, Michiko, is always around and super friendly & helpful. She is a whizz on Google translate should you reach the limits of your Japanese vocabulary (like I often did).
Nothing that affected me but, the small amount of seafront traffic through the night might affect light sleepers. You can always close the double glazing.

Verified reviewTransparent rules, easy check-in, full compliance with the description, great view on Sakurajima and sunrise, a complete set of necessary equipment, and a good number of power outlets. An excellent and friendly host.

Verified reviewCheck in was easy. The apartment block is easy to find. The view of the volcano from the balcony was great. The bedding was comfortable and warm. There were fluffy warm blankets. The communication from the host was good. There were minimal kitchen supplies. The apartment came with toiletries and paper products which was great.
The space was much smaller than I thought it would be. It would barely fit 2 futons with the current double bed. The floor mat was quite dusty/dirty. I sat on it in black pants and when I got up, they were all white with dust and dirt. We couldn't get the tv to work and the ceiling light hung low in the middle of the room, so my partner kept hitting it with his head.

Verified reviewThe accomodation is on a great position and within walking distance of many attractions. Public transport is also very close and it is very easy to hop on the Kagoshima City View bus from one of the nearby stops. The host welcomed us when we arrived and showed us the facilities in the apartments. The apartments were in good condition and A/C worked well. I would warmly recommend the apartments with a view of Sakurajima and waking up early during sunrise :) Will definitely come back here when visiting Kagoshima!
Should have stayed longer... :)
