How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.

As a less than agile person, I was worried about sleeping so low to the floor but slept extremely well and just had to think about how to get up.
It was a wonderful location and the property was beautifully & thoughtfully maintained

This property was exceptionally clean, peaceful, and unique. It's located in an amazing area of Gion, and was walking distance to many amazing things, including Kiyomizu Dera temple.

We did have to meet the hosts when checking in, which adds a layer of logistical detail to be aware of.
We loved our stay here during our visit to Kyoto! We loved the traditional style and how easy it made our trip with a group of 6. The bedrooms can easily be configured to your group, and there's also plenty of space to spend time together in common areas. The hosts were very communicative and friendly.

The host went well above expectations. One of our group had really bad chafing. We asked where was the chemist, and she told us. Then, before we had settled in, she returned with cream for us. The house was amazing and very clean Would highly recommend

Beautifully kept traditional home near major sites in Kyoto. The host was incredible! They mailed a shirt to us that we accidentally forgot. Definitely recommend.

There was some street noise, but that can't be avoided in the area
The host was extremely helpful and accommodating, meeting us when we arrived and answering all questions promptly. The location was also great and walkable to many things.

The only thing to be mindful of is that the dining room/kitchen downstairs is the only place without tatami floors. Hence you can't really take your heavy suitcase upstairs as it will damage the tatami. There is plenty of storage under the stairs to store them but if you're super set on having them in your room it might be difficult.
Wonderful house and the location is great! You're down the street from Maiko Ya if you want a performance, a 15 minutes walk from Minamiza Theater and just a bit further from Nishiki market. The house itself is beautiful, the futon beds are super comfortable. The host was also great and very accommodating.

Historic old house that had been beautifully and authentically restored with just enough new technology to make the stay an absolute delight. Special call out to Rieko who made the stay hassle free

Only thing to improve would be blinds in the main bedroom. Room gets quite bright early in the morning.

Reiko our host was in contact with us and very accommodating to our pre & post stay requests. We were close to all attractions, food and transport. We would highly recommend staying here. Kyoto was a beautiful picturesque town. Fallas family - Sydney Australia

I agree with another American review that it would be nice to have loveseat or small couch to relax on at the end of the day. We are not used to sitting on the floor, yet we really did enjoy getting out of comfort zone and enjoying the simple surroundings.
The location, the comfortable space inside, the washer/dryer, the big bath tub, the heaters and kitchen. It’s a beautiful traditional Japanese home that we loved staying at

The steps up to the bedrooms are very steep, was ok for us but just be aware of this.
Nice change with traditional Japanese style accommodation. Very close to all the sites, restaurants and shops and had everything you need. The beds were surprisingly very comfortable and the accommodation had 3 bedrooms which was perfect with our 2 x adult children.
