Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

JapanNothing to complain about!
Fantastic location, extremely personable staff thanks to the wonderfully friendly Yossey who runs this guesthouse. He was helpful and kind, and talking with him and other guests in the house was a highlight of my trip. Beautiful house as well if you want to experience a traditional Japanese house structure without paying high prices for a ryokan.

United StatesThe host was amazing and gracious. The stay was like a traditional ryokan, but without the meals. There was a fully equipped shared kitchen fur guests. The property was in a great location to explore the culture and beauty of the area.

An ancient house with a quiet environment. At night, you can clearly hear the sound of trains and the faint sound of waves, which is very relaxing! The owner respects guests very much and gives them complete space for activities.

AustraliaI loved my stay at Usagi. Yossy the owner is very helpful and has created a stylish place to stay. It is spotlessly clean and newly renovated. I liked the mix of traditional elements (tatami, shoji screens and antiques) with modern conveniences of kitchen, washing machine and bathrooms. The guesthouse is in a very peaceful location, with Hanonoiwa Shrine and the beach only a short walk away and a mountain behind which is part of the property. Yossy the owner also runs local tours which I highly recommend as you can get to places which are hard to get to without a car. There is a convenience store about five minutes walk away. The closest station is Arii (about 10 mins away) and it’s about a 25 minute walk to Kumano-shi station/town. There are a total of three guest rooms. As they are divided by shoji screens, you can hear other guests but I didn’t find this a real problem as people were respectful and kept the noise down. It’s possible to prepare your own meals in the kitchen but there are also plenty of restaurants in the vicinity. There is an honour system at the guesthouse for snacks, drinks, coffee machine whereby you put your coins in a box to pay for beer etc. NB there are no tea bags so please bring your own if you like tea. I highly recommend staying at Usagi for discovering a quieter side of Japan that is off the beaten track.

FranceTHIS is the experience you want in Japan. Away from the city in a traditional japanese house, clean and comfy with a spiritual depth to it. Host is amazing, Yossy is a very friendly and caring person, he will do his best to make your experience in Kumano-shi unforgettable, take you on tour or share a meal in a local restaurant. This was by far the best place I stayed, I would highly recommand you to stay at Guesthouse Usagi if you plan to visit Kumano-shi ! Thank you Yossy, you've been amazing 🙏🏻

AustraliaVery comfortable stay in a beautiful traditional Japanese house that’s been fully renovated for inside. The location is perfect for Kumano Kodo Iseji and is right next to a beautiful shrine and close proximity to hiking trailheads.

TaiwanKumano is very nice and the guesthouse is as well! The room is a traditional japanese style but it is quiet comfortable, and the bathroom is very clean. Also, I would like to mention that Kawakami San is very nice and help us a lot on booking several restaurants in Japanese, since we are unable to speak.

AustraliaUsagi house is quaint, quiet, atmospheric, professional and absolutely authentic and its host Yossy is filled with Japanese “ omotenashii “ and kindness. If you are considering travelling to the kii hanto, then you have found your destination. The area has an abundance of natural beauty - mountains, clear streams, lush green vegetation and forests, flora and fauna, hotsprings and the ocean right by your door and delicious seafood all just a stroll away from your guest house. Yossy is a perfect host and he stands ready to selflessly assist you in any way he can. This is a complete and absolute authentic stay in one of the most beautiful and unspoilt parts of Japan at accomodation of the very highest standard you can find. This is a very very special place and if you are planning travelling to this part of the world, then I recommend you look no further than Usagi guest house.

NetherlandsWe have travelled three weeks in Japan and have been in around 12 different guesthouses and hotels. Usagi guesthouse was for me the nest one. Very clean, tradional, beautifull restored old house and a very friendly, welcoming owner. The ocean is a one minute walk away and a very old shrine, the oldest, Just around the corner. One of the shrines where alom a pelgrimage route. Although we Just stayed for one night, it was a great experience.
