How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

Verified reviewVery close to beach, shrine, convenience stores, and a ramen place. The AC was very good, and TV was good size for the room. It was clean, and our door locked with us having the only key. Tatami flooring was very nice.
The beds were futons, and not very big or thick. No kitchen, but a fridge, microwave, and kettle. Communal sinks, showers, and toilet.

Verified reviewClose to the Shirahama beach, cafes, konbinis and bus stop. It was a comfortable stay, the host was very nice and helpful. The room was spacious. There was a snooker table in the hallway which was fun! It was nice to interact with fellow guests in the hallway.
I was probably missing the Japanese toilet (bidet) but otherwise all the facilities were very nice.

It was very difficult to sleep - its an old Japanese house and the walls were very thin, so could hear neighbours every move. Luckily neighbours were fine, but this is located on the main road with traffic continuing into the middle of the night and early morning (indeed I and next room got woken up at 03.30 AM by passing motorbike). Also the aircon is a strange type - the compressor was located inside the room (instead of outside the building as normal) meaning the aircon was very noisy - too noisy to sleep as the compressor kicked in every 15 minutes with very loud and surprising noise. In the end turned air con off, despite around 30 degrees temperature. I got almost no sleep.

Verified reviewWe like that it's close to the Shirahama beach. The staff was also nice. The price was just right. The bathroom is large and has a bathtub too.
The sink on the 2nd floor was kinda dirty. And the parking was a little bit far it would be nice if it were near the guesthouse.

Verified reviewLocation is perfect - just a short walk to the main Shirahama beach, and basically opposite Shirahama shrine, which is absolutely stunning. Plus it was very close to two bus stations that take you to Shimoda city and other nearby areas. The room was comfortable and the aircon worked really well, which we were grateful for in the July heat. The futons were double-layered and comfy. The room came with a TV. There was plenty of space to store our luggage. We didn't go in while we were there, but the downstairs bar looked really cute. They provided shampoo and conditioner in the bathroom and changed our towels and amenities for us daily, which was a nice touch. The shared toilets were nice and clean. And it was really affordable!
Obviously as a budget accommodation, there were some things left to be desired. In the shared living area, there wasn't really any place to sit down. There is a basic shared kitchenette with an urn and microwave and such, as well as some cups, but no cutlery provided - so if you bring any food make sure to bring your own or get some from a conbini. The sink in the shared space, which doubled as a kitchen and bathroom sink, was a little grotty. Having a place to put your toiletries and sit down for a meal would make a world of difference, I think!

Verified reviewIt is 1-2 minutes walk to the Shirahama beach. Hostess is very welcoming, though she doesn’t speak much English she is trying her best to help. I arrived very early and they allowed me to stay inside. Tatami room has a bit of a traditional ambiance. It is a clean place. Water spray at the entrance to wash all the sand off
A bit pricey for the basic and a small place, I think you mostly pay for the location. Not enough showers and toilets. Very tiny common area. A bit an old place with tiny hallways
