Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

NetherlandsBut the other side of the story is that it is not really comfortable. The bed style is like laying on a garden seat pillow on the ground.
Well it is the real experience, staying in a Ryokan.

GermanySince it is a guesthouse, the walls are a bit thin. With other loud guests it could be a disturbance. In our case the other guests weren't loud, so everything was all good.
Good guesthouse with big rooms and clean common areas in a local neighborhood. Guesthouse is close to the main attractions and the old town. It is a traditional tatami room and offers a lot of space. Luggage storage was also provided.

CanadaDoor frames were low, but that's typical of many Japanese houses. The common areas can get cold.
Fully equipped house: kitchen, washing machine. At the edge of the historic centre, though it's up a hill. Friendly host. The sleeping rooms were furnished like a traditional ryokan but the house was modern. Easy check-out.

New ZealandKitchen pots are few and rather small to feed a family. Walls are thin and guests don't always realise how sound travels. Having said that, we didn't get woken up by any noise.
Great location just a few minutes from the old town, almost next door to a temple with great views. We had a good room, the traditional beds were comfy and could be folded up out of the way to make space during the day. Kitchen and washing machine were useful. Owner came round specially when we struggled to get on the wifi. If it happens to you, just reboot the router!

BrazilThe photos of the common areas do not accurately represent the house (kitchen, living room and the exterior of the house). I suggest updating the photos.
I loved the experience of staying in a traditional Japanese house. The hosts are very kind and helpful. The private room is small and cozy. I highly recommend it!

It s a very nice house in a good location in the centre of town, 10 mins walk to bus/train station. It s in a quiet cul de sac, so there is no street noise. It is also well equipped with everything you could need in the kitchen. Very clean, too.The host lives very close by.

NetherlandsI would not recommend you stay here in the colder months. With temperatures dropping to -11 degrees, the house is way too cold. Everything you do feels like a chore because it is so cold, let alone showering in the freezing air. House is poorly insulated, airco can not keep up with the cold, especially because the shared rooms are not heated most of the time. All the heat just escapes immediately. There were no extra blankets so we were sleeping with 3 layers of clothes on. It doesn’t help that the airco blows air to the roof and door, and you sleep on the cold floor. Shoes are frozen when putting them on in the morning, so cold feet for the rest of the day. We were happy to warm up in some nearby restaurants. In warmer months this would be a good stay. In colder months, staff should do something about this.
Good location, clean, authentic house, very nice and English speaking staff. Overall very nice stay.

IraqThe heating situation in the room. The living room was heated well, but the bedroom's AC was lacking. We had a really cold night that the AC couldn't catch up with the cold. And the mattress were not helping. They were cold too. Could use another pillow or bigger one too. The place is great, just the heating situation in the room needs little bit fixing.
It was a charming Japanese style guests house with a beautiful location that's close to the old town. There is also a retro museum near by that is a must visit. The room and the house was beautiful and very authentic. There is well equiped kitchen and very clean shared bathrooms and toilets.

DenmarkI stayed for three nights during the winter when it was -5 degrees outside. Since this is a ryokan-style guesthouse, the room wasn't very warm, so I had to wear more than one layer indoors. The room I had featured an air conditioner installed high on the wall, which didn't warm the floor much. It would be perfect if there were a standing heater placed on the floor.
Staying at Tajayama Hanzansha seems like the perfect way for me to enjoy real Japanese vibes. It's great that it's near Takayama's sights and still not too crowded. I like that there's a cozy common room with comic books and a table to eat at. The room I had was quite big, and the comfy futon made it feel like a home away from home. I’m really looking forward to this cozy getaway!
