How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewThe staff were nice. The manager was always happy to say hello and had good English.
Where to start… I mean it wasn’t bad, but I wouldn’t stay here again. The bathroom was all mouldy and set off my asthma everytime I went to toilet. The showers were unisex and 3 floors below. The onsen was quite dirty really and sides were mouldy and same with floor. The bathroom door didn’t go all the way to the ceiling so was very very self conscious having a shower incase someone could look over as I kept hearing people talk right outside. There was no soap in the toilets to wash my hands in so had to go buy some myself to use, same with a toilet or tissue for hands. I got told I was on ladies only floor but my next door neighbor was male. They made me give my key back everytime I left - which I get to an extent of not wanting me to loose it, but it’s left in a basket on front desk that is not manned all the time so anyone can come in and take key and find room number and go in, this caused me loads of anxiety and in the end took so much of my stuff with me throughout day I hurt back carrying it all up the mountain. The kitchen looked horrendously unclean from a distance. It’s very loud in street below and as the walls are very thin, neighbors are very loud. I hardly slept because the bed was very uncomfortable, the head was lower than the rest of it so I was sleeping at an angle, the pillow was a bean bag and ended up just sleeping on a hoodie instead as that was a lot more comfortable. I also said I didn’t need room cleaning during day and left the inner door slightly open to my hand width to see if anyone would go in, but came home to it being completely shut so someone did. The walls in bedroom didn’t fit either, there was polystyrene blocking up the hole into the room next door. Was just the building and up keep really. Gave me too much anxiety staying here. And wouldn’t again. But staff were nice and had good English, so not all bad.
Thank you for staying with us. We apologize for the inconvenience. We do our best to clean the bathrooms and other areas, but we will take your opinion as an area for improvement and strive to make improvements. The staff said that it was a women's only floor, but the staff seemed to mean "the floor with the women's restroom." Regarding key management, if the front desk is not there, the key will be locked so that no one can enter the room. You pointed out that the neighbors were noisy, but we made sure that there were no guests on either side of you during your stay, but we are sorry that it was still noisy. You said that you instructed the staff that "the room does not need to be cleaned," but this was not conveyed to the staff. We are very sorry. The staff who cleaned your room removed the trash and dried the futon. We appreciate your understanding that we have made it possible for you to stay comfortably.

Perhaps the only challenge was the bathroom being in a different floor and they only have shared showers

Verified reviewThis place is a historic gem. It gives a very traditional feel, with modern amenities like Wi-Fi and air conditioning / heating. Rooms are beautiful, the hot spring bath is great, and the staff is very kind and helpful. Have stayed here on multiple occasions, and will come back for sure.
The street downstairs with many bars can get a bit noisy on some weekends, but nothing too troublesome

Verified reviewThe first day I felt the place is a little bit creepy, old and not renovated, but the second day I used to it and stayed for 4nights together. The receptionists are very nice and take care of you all the time they see you (what can be even sometimes too much:) The hotel has bath thumb and massaging chairs (but old ones) and you have a separate room just for you - so it is advantage - looking at price. You have the view for fuji mountain from your room.
Only 1 bath connected with bath thumb for whole hotel, so it can be a problem if someone spends 1hour in a thumb. I could hear some mouses/rats through walls in my room (wooden building), but i did not see them anywhere. No kitchen, you cannot cook there (but receptionist boiled my eggs one time and gave me plates etc). there is only a room where you can eat sonething heated in microwave. The hotel should be renovated, as it looks a little bit scary. futron was quite hard and not co.fortable.
Thank you for staying with us for 4 nights. However, we are sorry that you pointed out that the bed was not comfortable. We will continue to make improvements so that everyone can have a comfortable stay.

Verified reviewThis hotel is just as shown in the pictures. The rooms are enough for spending there some time there and sleeping well. The main street is a little bit busy at night, if you can not sleep with some noise is better for you to buy some earplugs. The staff is really nice and helpful and the hotel is amazing (if you like the old style Japanese vibe).
Thank you for staying with us. And thank you for your rating. However, we are sorry that you were not satisfied with the noise at night. We will continue to do our best to help you have a good trip.

Verified reviewIf you're looking for quiet and comfy break while travelling, this is a great place to breath! I liked mostly the inside onsen open at any time, came back from trecks in the mountain and was pleasent to find a spot where to regenerize.

Verified reviewI have stayed at Taiya Ryokan twice. It retains an old-fashioned charm, the tatami rooms are basic but clean, and on clear days, those that look out over the main street have a fantastic view of Mt. Fuji. Steep stairs to the second and third floors. If you don't speak Japanese, a smile and a bit of effort will go a long way, and will be reciprocated by the excellent staff. There is a small bath on the first floor, as well as a communal room with refrigerator, microwave, etc., plus a library of Japanese books.
Thank you for staying with us. And thank you for your rating. We apologize for the inconvenience caused by the steep stairs. We will continue to do our best to help you have a good trip.

Verified reviewVery nice roykan with the nicest owner and Staff. We felt right at Home! I find the rooms charming, everything is kept clean and it was quiet at night. Many restaurants and bars are nearby, and the bus stop towards Fuji and shin-Fuji station is just a 3 minute walk. Will definitely stay here again should I be back in Fuji.
