We had difficulty getting the food because the staff said they had to prepare 2 or 3 days in advance, even though they sent us a message just after booking if we wanted food and we replied yes. It's not in Nikki were all the sites and temples are. It's really out of the way and complicated to get the trains to Nikki. We managed, but it was a little struggle and time consuming to go visit Nikki and the tourists sites, which are really worth it. Make sure you have cash with you, because the only ATM in the village never works.

Great hotel to relax out of the tourist venues. The hot tub were really nice and the bedroom great and roomy. Beautiful decor and the food was just exceptional!

There weren't many restaurants in town, but the staff had already notified us about that beforehand. And the few restaurants that are in town are really nice.

Such a nice little get-away in a small remote town. We loved our traditional japanese room, and the bed was really comfy. The staff was so lovely and I regret not catching her name who helped us the most. She was truly helpful and always willing to assist us with anything or finding any info for us. We loved the onsen.

Reception and Lounge areas lovely , rooms dated and need freshening up. Dinner and breakfast times are too rigid.

Unfortunately beyond the central Reception and Lounge areas i found the room to be dated and in need of a freshen up , the lights are very old , they flicker and buzz loudly which was really annoying and this spoilt the room so it wasn’t relaxing. The extract vents , smoke heads , walls were dusty and this just spoilt the experience for me and made the rooms feel unclean.

The Reception & Lounge areas were stunning and fitted out very nicely , you could sit and have a coffee and look out at the garden and the little waterfall it was lovely. I didn’t try the dinner & breakfast service but only because they need to be booked in advance and are both served a little early for me personally. The room had a nice view out of the large window.

They sent the day before if we wanted to eat and we responded in the morning that we would like, but it was not possible anymore despite the fact that there is a whole day in between. It was not very flexible, especially knowing that the neighbourhood had nothing to eat. The place is really far located from Nikko, so attention if you come by train (by car it is no problem).

Very beautiful place, beds are ok for futons, nice onsen

The place feels a bit old, like it has seen better days. You need to book breakfast and dinner in advance (and you should order both).

We liked the atmosphere, the spacious place, and the very friendly staff. It’s in a great location with plenty of parking spots. The onsen was nice. There’s also a good restaurant nearby

Not a negative about the property at all but was a little more remote than I intended so check train timetables regularly as trains aren’t so frequent.

Lovely and relaxing and nice onsen I was able to use whilst being heavily tattooed without any issues. Huge room and lovely view and enjoyed the free ocha.

In need of a little maintenance and care, but given the cost of the stay, I could completely look past this. Only recommendation would be a stocked mini bar!

Charming property in a quiet village. Among the other hotels and accommodations this is the most elegant and discreet. Staff is easy to connect with and charming. If you need them, easiest is to communicate via booking messages. Replies and quick and courteous. Dinner and breakfast package is not to be missed. Onsen is comfortable and very hot (despite other reviews citing the contrary) Rooms and Futons are large and very comfortable. Was in room 402. Great. I am solo traveller often traveling for work. Used a few days before some meetings to travel here. Great hiking trails not far. Didn’t have a car and trains are easy to access and understand. Indeed check timings first.

We didn’t know how far we would be from the tourist destination of Nikko. About 45 minutes by car. It’s not a dealbreaker by far, but there were less expensive alternatives within walking distance of our intended sites to see. Also, really no place to eat after 6 PM. The combini down the street was welcoming but empty shelved. Plan to eat on site or drive.

We had an ‘economy room’ and it was the biggest we had in a 30 trip in Japan. Lots of pillows, futons, duvets…super comfy. The staff had limited English but were very well prepared with printed English information. There is ample parking right next to the hotel which is unusual.

We wished the WiFi worked in our bedroom.

Sakahajiri was a bit more remote than I had planned for us to be from Nikko, however, when timing the trains right the journey from Tokyo was super smooth, and getting to Nikko and the world heritage sites was not bad at all. The hotel is stunning and we greatly enjoyed the traditional ryokan experience. The onsen was a particularly special and exciting experience. Unfortunately we didn’t book the room with food but got to try the cute restaurants and cafes nearby which worked well for us. I would book with food next time!

The hotel is located in a very remote area of Nikko. It's perfect if you want to go hiking and disconnect from the world, but if you are there to visit the main touristic points of Nikko, such as The World Heritage with the temples, then this hotel is not for you because you are very far from it. It's not well connected, trains are rare and you take 1.5h to reach Nikko. If you go by car, it's perfect. The staff is nice and helpful, they speak English, but they don't have 24h reception, you can find the staff only for a few hours during the day.

The Wi-Fi needs to be working. It was only working for YouTube but not for other more useful websites including airline and other travel related websites. This was true for the two rooms we occupied and on several types of our devices.

The rooms are beautiful but could use some uplift.

The onsen isn't well maintained, the outside bath was cold and a hose that felt out of place was pouring water in the one inside. The facilities are old, which I don't mind, but some maintenance or a renewal is necessary.

Authentic Ryokan in a sleepy village, very relaxing. Great futons and room.

The bathroom in the room was a bit too small, but we did not use it since we enjoyed the onsen. The location is a bit far from Nikko by train and you need several connections to arrive there, but it is definetely worth
