Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

South AfricaThis is such a special ryokan, right on the river and overall it was a wonderful experience. There are multiple onsens to choose from. The ryokan food took us out of our comfort zone, and we tried Japanese dishes we never would have otherwise. The staff were all very helpful which added to making our stay pleasant. Make sure you arrive right on the check in time to make the most out of your stay or even better - opt to stay two nights! :-)

We had a wonderful stay. The location and the place itself were beautiful. The staff were very kind, and Hasegawa took especially great care of us. The onsen was lovely, and the traditional dinner was a unique experience with many courses and a variety of flavors.

United KingdomHaving no beds or comfortable chairs in the room during the day may be difficult for some - though I’m sure the hotel would provide an option on request given their absolute commitment to making the experience fantastic for their guests.
Absolutely stunning location. Beautiful historic building, spotlessly clean and comfortable with incredibly kind and friendly staff. The onsen baths were lovely and the peace and tranquility were very special. The meals were fantastic - two of our party don’t eat fish and the hotel went out of their way to provide delicious and varied alternatives. The staff who looked after meal service were so friendly and helpful, explaining how to eat the more complicated courses.

AustraliaAbsolutely nothing - it was all perfect
Words cannot describe how special this place is. The most wonderful hospitality, onsen, koi peacefully swimming around the buildings, immaculate Japanese gardens, a bubbling river to look over whilst sipping green tea. Pure relaxation and luxury. Prepared a special vegetarian meal as well. Arigato!

SwitzerlandIt really isn’t a negative point, but something to consider: most staff do not speak any foreign language and you need to communicate with a smartphone or a tablet. It’s a bit of a beaten path and takes time to get to from Tokyo or Kyoto. But still absolutely worth it. Food is spectacular but they do not compromise: either you eat their Japanese cuisine or there is little alternative.
An incredible experience in the Japanese countryside, on the Izu peninsula. Beautiful, traditional architecture (apparently in place since 1872!), in lush greenery, set on natural thermal baths (you bathe in so called onsens, in natural warm water). Stay includes preset breakfast and dinner menus, which are Michelin quality and would cost you 100s $ in Europe or America. So value for money is great too, even if the sticker price may seem high. Plus, staff is extremely attentive and polite.

JapanThe property itself was amazing. One thing that was unfortunate is that the walls are very thin, and some very loud people were stomping around on the 2nd floor from 6 am, so we couldn’t get a good sleep….
Beautiful ryokan, very traditional Japanese, has a beautiful garden and pond with Koi inside. The outside baths were really nice. Food was delicious and for a really good price. Staff were so nice and caring, they really made our stay memorable. Thank you ❤️

United StatesThis ryokan is huge with several onsen baths. We were served dinner and breakfast right next to our rooms. Staff helped us a lot in getting a large taxi to take us for a day trip to a museum. The ryokan is convenient and a short walk to the shrine, bamboo forest, shopping, etc.

Staying in ryukan is a must of my trip to Japan and Arai Ryukan doesn't make me disappointed. Starting from the location of the ryukan which is very easy to reach. You get off to check in and the staff will bring your car to the parking. Checking in is my first impression. The staff is willing to answer your questions and will show you all facilities available. You will have your own personal caregiver. The dinner and breakfast are included in the price and they are very excellent. The onsen both indoor and outdoor are the unforgettable experience. The town attractions are located within the walking distance..

New ZealandEverything was exceptional. The traditional building was beautifully maintained and every corner was photo worthy. The staff were friendly and took very good care of us. Our room was beautiful and spacious, we had a wooden tub in our bathroom to soak in and amazing garden views from the windows. The food was beautifully presented and delicious. Onsens were wonderful and each one had its own charm and feel. The place is a short walk from the bus stop and next to the bridges and bamboo grove, allowing easy access in the evening. The stay at this ryokan was definitely a highlight of our Japan trip and we’d love to stay here again.

United StatesEverything was fine. I can't pick something I didn't like. If we stayed more than two nights, then maybe I will find things, but I am not sure if they changed their menu; I wonder if I stay again, will I get the same menu and food?

FranceI booked this ryokan to celebrate my partner's 30th birthday. This is the first time we have stayed at a ryokan, and the stay has exceeded our expectations! The ryokan itself is a national cultural asset, indeed the interior is absolutely stunning, with lots of nature and a pond where you can feed the koi. Our room was Japanese style with a river view, the view is impressive. The onsens inside the ryokan are very comforting, as well as the kaiseki dinner and the hearty breakfast. Staff was very friendly and helpful.
