Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

CanadaOur first night of Kaiseiki dining felt a bit rushed as I had to finish my plate so that they could bring in the next course. Thankfully, that wasn’t the case for our 2nd night and I got to properly savour our meal.
We adored our own personal open-air bath in our room in the Junior Suite we chose! That was one of the highlights of our stay. The hotel is about a 10min walk from the Yudanaka train station with our medium-sized luggage. We opted for a shuttle, which you have to reserve in advance for our return. We love ryokans and this was clean and super comfortable. We chose the option of meals with our rooms, which is highly recommendable because it is delicious and you get to experience kaiseiki dining in a private dining room. In addition, the lovely owner paid us a visit during dinner and we got to converse with her and know a little bit more of her beautiful establishment. She also came out to bid us goodbye when we had to leave.

AustraliaAbsolutely nothing!
After nearly seven weeks on the road around Japan, this was one of our favourite accommodations of our stay. From the host greeting us with umbrellas on our arrival in the rain and a Japanese tea during check in, to the owner of the hotel coming to say hello and have a chat in our private restaurant room, to the beautiful furnishing and decors throughout, this hotel was outstanding! We felt it was time to splurge a little more than normal being our last days in Japan and felt it was worth every cent! Our room was huge, with multiple areas to spread out and relax, double sinks in the bathroom and a toilet for each of us!! And the best feature was the huge balcony with lovely views over the river, a lounge and the open air hot spring bath! The included meals were delicious and enjoyed in your own private room within the restaurant and the complimentary bar and snack service offered in the afternoons, in an exclusive, cosy lounge all made our stay feel even more special. The hotel is a short distance to the Snow Monkey Park and to Shibu Onsen and there’s a great little brewery located just behind the hotel. We would absolutely stay here again and would highly recommend this fabulous hotel.

United StatesNothing, everything was as or better than we expected.
The breakfast were very good, lots of variety. Location was remote and very relaxing. The view from our Riyokan/onsen was gorgeous overlooking the rivers. The room was very spacious.Very small town, but good food close by. It was a short distance to the snow monkey park and excellent walks through the forest. It is a very relaxing spa and they take very good care of us. Rooftop baths, both communal and private for a couple on request.Free pick up and delivery to the train station, we lacked nothing.

I can't say enough good about Aburaya Tousen. The room was beautiful and huge with our own private onsen in the room. The food at the restaurant for both dinner and breakfast were incredible. And the restaurant service was the best I think I've ever had.

Hong KongCan't think of a single thing. This stay feels perfect, or near perfect. I guess just be aware that the shower room is a bit exposed or visible to the public, as it's next to the private tub on the balcony. If you're booking this room with someone you're not comfortable being naked next to, it could be a bit skittish, I suppose.
Worth every cent I paid for, for the junior suite. Service impeccable from arrival to departure where owner lady saw us out. The view of the river out front and mountains backdrop is awesome. Wifi is great, and room very comfortable. We still miss our own private little onsen tub. Private dinner experience excellent, though you might want to order more food (from additional a la carte menu) if you tend to eat a lot. Sweet old owner lady went around briefly greeting all the guests. Lounge (access came with room) very neat and cool, with wine & charcuterie served 5-7p. I could go on and on, but this is by far the best traditional-style stay my entire Japan trip, next to the new Waldorf Osaka modern-style stay I had. It's everything I dreamed a ryokan experience would be & more. Definitely ticked off my bucket list item.

United StatesThe beds were on the ground. I booked a western room and the pictures seemed to show the beds not on the ground. The mattresses were very uncomfortable.
The decor, the staff and the private dinners at night were exceptional. The owner made sure to come by our dining area the first night to welcome us to her hotel. The private breakfast was also amazing.

AustraliaThe staff and service were incredibly friendly and accomodating. On arrival we were treated to matcha and mochi while the staff checked us in. Our room had its own onsen that was all set up for us when checked into our room. We chose the dinner and breakfast option and the dinner was a standout, traditional Japanese set course menu.

United StatesEverything was excellent.
The onsen was lovely and a highlight of our trip to Japan. We had a suite with a private outdoor bath and it was such a treat. Dinner was included with our room. We expected a typical dinner, but instead received an incredible multi-course meal in a private room - it was superb. The property also offered several lounges and rooftop bar (with individual personal igloos) that were simply wonderful. Highly recommend a stay here!
