Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomIf there’s one minor downside, it’s the lack of access to the pool on the property, which belongs to another hotel within the castle complex. If they ever reached an agreement to share pool access, this would honestly be a 12/10 perfect destination. That said, Il Mastio does have a hot tub and a peaceful garden where you can relax and take in the surroundings.
This charming B&B is set inside a beautifully preserved historic castle, which already makes it a special experience. It’s family run, with just four rooms plus one suite, making it feel intimate, personal, and incredibly peaceful. We booked the suite room, and we’re so glad we did, it far exceeded our expectations. The room is massive, it could easily accommodate more than two people, and includes a small kitchenette, two bathrooms, and a stunning canopy (baldachin) bed. A bathtub right in the middle of the room (straight out of a Disney princess fantasy). Every detail felt thoughtful and romantic. The location is remote and tranquil, you’re truly in the Tuscan countryside, so it’s wonderfully quiet and perfect for unwinding. While there’s not much immediately around the castle itself, it’s just a short drive to Pienza, Montepulciano, and Bagno Vignoni, all must-sees. A car is essential, but the drives are part of the charm. Breakfast each morning was a real treat. The lovely host (and manager) makes the best omelette I’ve had in ages, and the spread includes delicious espresso, homemade cakes, fresh ricotta, and seasonal vegetables, a true Tuscan feast to start the day.

United StatesThe bed was a nice size but a little stiff. The pillows were a little flat and hard too but this is really a European thing. There isn't a lift so you need to bring your luggage up a few flight of stairs. Check in was a little confusing. We weren't clear where to go and we were waiting in another B&B's waiting room. I didn't realize there were multiple businesses in the castle.
The Castle had a beautiful garden - great surprise - for sitting to read a book and relax. The breakfasts that Christine provided were amazing - fresh and bountiful. She was very accommodating. We stayed in the Superior Suite which had 2 rooms, 2 full baths and a kitchenette. The space allowed us to relax and choose to dine in which was a nice change. The toiletries were top notch - loved the slippers. Our room was cleaned each day - the castle was well maintained.

PolandThis family-run hotel is an absolute treasure. From the moment you arrive, you’re welcomed with warmth and genuine hospitality that makes you feel right at home. Christina, the heart and soul of the place, is a truly wonderful host—kind, attentive, and always ready to help with a smile. You can tell she truly cares about every guest. The location is simply unbeatable—everything is within walking distance, including the charming old town, local restaurants, and even a beautiful castle nearby. Despite being so central, the hotel offers a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere that feels like an oasis. The rooms are spotlessly clean, thoughtfully furnished, and equipped with everything you need for a comfortable stay. There’s even a well-equipped gym for those who like to stay active while traveling. And let’s talk about the breakfast—absolutely delicious! Fresh, varied, and made with love. It’s the perfect way to start your day in Tuscany. I can’t recommend this place enough. If I ever return to Tuscany, I wouldn’t stay anywhere else. It’s not just a hotel, it’s an experience.

NetherlandsThere was nothing we didn’t like. But maybe good to know for elderly: there was no elevator.
For sure the best stay of our Tuscany holiday trip. What a beautiful little castle in Val d’Orcia! Extremely clean, comfortable rooms and the best service. During our stay I was 32 weeks pregnant and Christina did everything to make me feel comfortable and gave us great tips during our stay. The room was spacious and fresh (even during the heat of 35 degrees) with enough closet room; a fridge and a big bathroom with delicious products and many big soft towels. The matras and pillows were really good, we slept so well. The room had a beautiful view on the garden and Tuscan hills. There was a jacuzzi in the garden with lounge beds to enjoy. Last but not least: the breakfast was the best we have had! Christina did everything to spoil you, by making delicious eggs to your liking, fresh bruschetta and a kitchen full of home made cakes. There were also fresh products from the region, like cheeses, yoghurt and ricotta and fresh fruit. We had the best stay and would highly recommend!

United KingdomI didn’t know when making my booking that the bedroom was basically inside the kitchen/dining room area which we found a bit awkward as to enter or leave the bedroom we had to walk past this area, I think it would have been nice to have a heads up about that, but it wasn’t a problem at all for us as it was not noisy or anything and we love staying at Il Mastio di Spedaletto.
The castle is beautiful we had the best time, Cristina was super helpful and breakfast was amazing with lots of options, the bed in our bedroom was very comfortable

IsraelThe location and accessibility were also excellent, though it's worth noting that our room was on the second floor with access via stairs only – something to keep in mind for those with mobility concerns.
Our stay at Il Mastio di Spedaletto was truly an unforgettable experience, thanks in large part to the exceptional hospitality of our host, Cristina. From the moment we checked in, we were greeted with an incredibly warm and personal welcome. Cristina went above and beyond for my wife's birthday, surprising her with a beautiful large bouquet of flowers, a bottle of wine, chocolates, and heartfelt greetings from our children. This personal touch made the occasion incredibly special and set the tone for a wonderful stay. The check-in process was seamless and delightful. The room and common areas were impeccably clean, reflecting great care and attention to detail. The host's politeness and attentiveness were outstanding. Cristina herself prepares and serves the breakfast each morning, giving it a unique personal touch. The breakfasts were simply wonderful – rich, varied, and incredibly delicious, providing a warm and intimate start to each day. We wholeheartedly recommend Il Mastio di Spedaletto to other travelers. It's an ideal choice for couples looking for a personal, warm, and exceptionally hospitable experience. The level of care and the personal touches truly elevate this stay beyond a typical hotel.

This is the best stay out of all four we had in the Tuscany. It is located in a small castle, and it was perfect. The hosts were kind, even waited for us with a late check-in. The lovely host will gladly make delicious scrambled eggs every morning, just like at home, with an amazing bruschetta, offering 5 juice options, yogurts, fruits, cereal and more than 5 different types of home-made pastries. It is very rare that you would get this kind of breakfast anywhere in Italy. The location was also perfect, in Val d'Orcia heart and you can get anywhere really fast if you're by car. Everything is clean and smells great. Also really safe to park.

SwitzerlandWe did an 11 day trip through Tuscany and this place was without a doubt the best stay/experience we had. If I could give 100/10 I would. The place (12th century castle!) is beautiful, it's located perfectly in a dreamy, isolated area of the Val d'Orcia but very close to places like Siena, Pienza or Montalcino (and it sits 5 mins away from Bagno Vignoni). The room was amazingly done, they offer EVERY amenity you can think of and the breakfast was one of the best we've had in ANY hotel of the world (cooked right before your very eyes). Top that with the fact that the place is run by a lovely and welcoming family that helped us at any point we needed it and you got the perfect stay. I truly think 5-star hotels should take note. Quite simple: if you plan on visiting the Val d'Orcia region, then this is the place to stay.

CanadaThis isn’t a major issue, but we would have appreciated having access to laundry facilities during our stay.
We had a great experience staying at Il Mastio di Spedaletto. We originally booked for two nights and were so happy with everything that we extended our stay by another two nights. The view from the room is fantastic, and the bed and linens are very comfortable. Breakfast is exceptional. Our host, Cristina, was incredibly kind and helpful. She even called the gas station on our behalf to resolve a credit card issue, as we don’t speak Italian. I would highly recommend this property to anyone who enjoys staying in a peaceful, nature-filled setting.

A magical place, so much so, that I really don’t want to talk too much about it and keep it secret 😅 but it won’t be fair. If you want to get away and forget about the stress of a city, wake up and look in awe through the window in the mornings, feel like royalty but be treated like your Italian mamma made you breakfast…just book Il Mastio, you won’t regreat it.

Hong KongAs with all other hotels in Italy situated in historical buildings, there are steep stairs but Cristina is more than happy to help with your luggages so it was not an issue for us.

United StatesWhat an amazing stay in Spedaletto! Driving up to the property and seeing a castle was fantastic. Our room was a full apartment and well appointed. The breakfast was absolutely delicious and a wonderful way to start the day. Though not in one of the cities of Tuscany, it was close enough for us tour any of them. We loved driving through the classic Tuscan countryside. Will definitely stay here again!
