How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.

We set this check-in time to ensure that the apartment is properly cleaned and sanitized for each guest. That said, we’re always happy to accommodate earlier arrivals when possible, just let us know in advance. Regarding the tube, Chiave di Volta Guesthouse has three rooms: Airone, Germano, and Rondine. It seems that you may have read the description for the Rondine room, but you booked Airone. That’s why the tube wasn’t included in your room. We always recommend reading the room details carefully before booking, and of course, feel free to reach out to us with any questions, as we're here to help and clarify anything before your stay. The 'quick' checkin process was terrible. Had to take two different pictures of passport for each person, then got taken to another app to read a rental lease which requires another app to sign it. I had a very difficult time getting these steps to work. Reached out to the host who was slow to respond and asked to sign when I arrived. No couldn't do that. After messing with the process for a few hours finally got it completed. The room was dark and musty smelling. The furniture was very dark wood and made the place feel old. The 'terrace' was a tiny 4x4 area over looking some rooftops. I dont usually write bad reviews but this place required it

For clarity, the registration only requires photos of the documents of one guest, not each person. The rental agreement can be signed using an integrated digital tool — there's no need to download or install any additional apps. In your case, I see from our conversation that you chose to download and sign the document manually, which understandably added extra steps and complexity. Regarding the room, it matches exactly what is shown in the listing photos. We take pride in preserving the antique dark-wood furniture, which we believe adds character and reflects the traditional charm of the house. That said, we’re sorry to hear that the atmosphere didn’t meet your expectations and will certainly look into the musty smell you mentioned. As for the terrace, while compact, it is exactly as shown in the pictures and offers a view over the rooftops and a glimpse of the lake — a typical feature of historic village homes in the center of Varenna. While located in a beautiful area and is very central to restaurants and bars, we struggled finding the property upon arrival. However the guide we received on email was helpful.

Verified reviewWe enjoyed having a full kitchen available. We only used it for a simple breakfast, but it was still nice. The property is well situated, not far from the lake, a fruit stand/tiny grocery, and restaurants.
1. Difficult to find. We were already in Varenna when the direction video was sent, so we didn’t see it until much later. 2 Having no staff available. 3. Delayed check in, after a tiring day of travel. 4. Old, hard, uncomfortable pillows. (1 each) 5. Dimly lit room. Some lights not working, such as over the bathroom sink.

We’re sorry, however, that certain aspects didn’t fully meet your expectations. Varenna’s historic center is beautiful but also quite tricky to navigate, with narrow alleys and poor GPS signal. That’s exactly why we try to send our detailed video directions as early as possible – we encourage guests to complete their registration in advance so we can share all check-in information promptly and avoid delays. We’re sorry this wasn’t the case for you and understand how frustrating it can be after a long travel day. We also wanted to clarify that this is a small guesthouse with only three rooms, so we do not have a traditional hotel-style reception, nor the space to accommodate staff on site full-time. However, we are always available remotely, and we’re happy to come in person when needed – we do our best to ensure each guest feels supported throughout their stay. We had a very frustrating experience with this property. Despite completing online check-in hours in advance and updating the host about a slight change in our arrival time (just 15 minutes later than originally stated), we were left waiting outside the accommodation for two hours with no response from the host. We tried calling and messaging the number provided several times, but no one answered. Thankfully, another guest who was checking out gave us a different number, and only then were we able to get in touch with someone to share the lock code number to let ourselves in. The accommodation itself was a disappointment. It smelled very damp inside, and the bedding was also damp and uncomfortable. The bathroom was in poor condition with visible mould around the bathtub, and there was no shower curtain, so the entire floor became soaked after using the shower. I also booked the property expecting a private balcony, as shown in the listing photos, but it turned out to be a shared balcony on another floor with very limited views — you could just about see the lake if you stood on tiptoes over chimney pots. It definitely wasn’t a space to sit and relax. When I raised these issues with the host, including the damp bedding and misleading listing, the response was dismissive. No apology was offered, and I was unfairly blamed for not filling in forms “in time,” even though I had done so well before arrival. Overall, I would not recommend this property. The lack of communication, misleading listing, and poor cleanliness made for a very disappointing stay.

There is only one official number listed in the booking communication and on our profile, and that is the number we monitor at all times. I do not know which number you were trying to reach before, but it was not ours. We also attempted to call the number you provided during your booking after receiving your message that you couldn't reach us, but received no answer. As for the check-in: your online form was submitted with incomplete information, and we only received it shortly before your estimated arrival time. Our team still tried to reach you, and the delay in accessing the apartment was not due to negligence on our part. Regarding the accommodation, I’m sorry to hear you were not satisfied. The apartment is regularly cleaned and aired out, and we will verify the issues you mentioned. However, we wish you had raised these concerns during your stay — we would have done our best to assist or intervene promptly. Lastly, about the balcony: your reservation was for a room without a private terrace. The listing makes this distinction clear — only one of the rooms includes private outdoor space, and this is specified in both the description and photo captions. I’m sorry if you misinterpreted the listing, but it was not misleading. Regarding the temperature in the room, the heating is fully autonomous and adjustable by guests. Had you let us know it felt cold, we would have immediately explained how to switch it on — it's a quick and easy process. As for the guesthouse itself, it is located in a historic building in the center of Varenna. While not modern in style, it is well-maintained and regularly cleaned. Only one pillow per person on the bed, which were very flat! The spare pillows in wardrobe did not have pillowcases on and also the wardrobes smelt very old and musty, I did not want to hang any clothes in. In first room we were in the bathroom door did not close. luckily I’ve been with my husband for 45 years so it didn’t matter if you know what I mean! Second room we were in the door in the shower wouldn’t shut and toilet seat was wobbly! The communication with host on the day was not good. They said they’d let me know if early check in would be available on the day but they didn’t and I ended up sending several messages and leaving voicemail. We ended up leaving our cases in a bar close by! Also there was a mix up with room keys so we didn’t get room we’d booked until the second night. On a positive note they did reimburse us for one night which was good.

We’ve informed our cleaning team to double-check that extra pillows always have cases and that wardrobes are properly aired and prepared for guests. We also inspected the door of the first bathroom — it does sometimes require a firmer pull to close properly, and we’re currently working on a fix. We will double-check the shower door and the toilet seat in the second room to ensure they are functioning as they should. Regarding early check-in, unfortunately during high season it’s often difficult to accommodate due to same-day turnovers. While we do our best to prepare rooms earlier on request, we cannot always confirm this in advance. I’m sorry if this caused inconvenience on your arrival day. We stayed in the room with the terrace with a view which was a great place to hang out. Shower is cramped. Kitchen a great place to prepare meals to save some money. It is a sliding door that, when open, is designed to blend into the wall for a seamless look. However, we appreciate your feedback and will add clearer indications to ensure future guests are aware of this feature. Regarding the directions, Varenna is indeed an ancient village with narrow, stepped streets, which can make navigation challenging. Since online maps often do not accurately recognize the smaller alleyways, we provide all our guests with detailed video instructions on how to reach the property from the main square, train station, and boat station.
