Nine comes strongly to my mind.

The hotel staff and people were quite friendly and helpful, especially when we were greeted by 'Jay' with great hospitality, he arranged our rooms before check-in time and offered coffee n tea while waiting for the room. In the dining area, we ordered pizzas, which were very good and the hospitality was nice. Later, we were assisted by 'Vasu' for the rest of our stay and he was equally friendly and helpful.

Needs more upgrades and restorations, newer equipment. It's quite a drive from the lakes (35 min to one hour).

    The view and the food.

Road from Lugano is quite steep and narrow in some places, locals drive though more aggressively than you as visitor - so, would recommend to avoid driving up there at night time and rain. Breakfast is quite basic, croissants were not tasteful - not like in Italy. Only good coffee saved it :). Restaurant itself is rather canteen, missing great opportunity to turn it into fantastic experience combined with hotel location.

The view on the lake is just stunning, both from ground viewing point and room balcony. Very grateful to the lady at reception, who kindly changed room offered from 1st to 3rd floor - so, we got absolutely amazing view from the room balcony. Overall, very friendly staff & service. Pizza in the restaurant is good. Free parking.

Not variety in the buffet, and some of the food was "protected" by parchment paper. Stip road to get there, driving from south.

    View from the room.

The view was absolutely spectacular. The hotel was clean and looked nice. There are still some improvements to be made, but it’s clear that it has been renovated. It is not really a 4-star hotel, but still a beautiful one. The view alone is worth every penny. The staff was very friendly, and the food at the restaurant was very good. We will definitely come back.

Nice, good hotel in the middle of nowhere. 🙂 The views are picturesque—very calm and quiet. If you're coming from Switzerland, you'll take a steep and slightly creepy road, with an unexpected border control point somewhere in the forest. There, I was asked about money and goods. 🙂 If you continue on to Italy later, the road becomes normal. The staff are friendly and welcoming. The restaurant is simple but cozy—an Italian place where kids can enjoy pizza and pasta. There's a funicular right next to the hotel, abandoned for many years, which also adds a bit of charm.

It is very very far away and requires a car basically, breakfast wasn’t varied and the food didn’t look appealing nor did it taste great. We had the first floor and the view was slightly obstructed but still great!

The view is surreal. The people are great but the absolute highlight is one of the best pizzas I’ve ever had.

The room felt a bit outdated. The drive up from Lugano was pretty terrifying but the drive down to Como wasn’t too bad. The outlook over the lake was incredible though, even though the view from our room on the side of the hotel wasn’t the best.

The views were amazing and the breakfast was good.

one again I can tell that it is an INCREDIBLE PLACE that's why it was the second staying there - the localisation is best of the best, beautiful view to Lugano and to the lake, in the room there is everything what you need for a few days, very comfortable beds, clean and tidy room, very friendly stuff, nice restaurant with reasonable prices, breakfast for us was enough with very tasty coffee con late - definitely it is a place worth recommending and coming back :)

The dining room is has a rather cold and uninviting decor - in stark contrast to the stunning views from the terrace. The sound insulation between the rooms is not good. We were lucky the first two nights but the 3rd night it got to be quite noisy.

Thew location is simply spectacular. The view from the terrace onto Lake Lugano is out of this world. The room is comfortable and ours had the same spectacular view. The location of the hotel is very quiet and feels like being at the end of the world. The breakfast is good with excellent coffee made at the bar rather than from an automat. The pizza we had for dinner was excellent

Little bit loud at night on the 1st floor due to local bar. Though this may have just been this particular night due to there being a sports game being televised. The WiFi wasn’t brilliant but to be expected considering the location

Incredible view overlooking lake Lugano and misty mountains and fabulous sunset watching to be had. Great food, the staff are multilingual and very friendly and welcoming, the beds are comfortable and the room are quite large, very clean and tidy.

Our stay at Hotel Funicolare was absolutely fantastic from start to finish. The location is incredible – perched high above, it feels like you’re among the gods when you look out your bedroom window. The views of the lakes and mountains are breathtaking, the kind you’ll never forget. The accommodation is spotless, with spacious rooms and large balconies perfect for sitting out, soaking in the scenery, and planning your day. Everything worked perfectly, and the cleanliness of the hotel was second to none. What really stood out, though, was the staff. Every single person we met was warm, friendly, and extremely helpful. They enjoy their work, which speaks volumes about how well the hotel is managed. The management team was also fantastic – attentive and genuinely committed to ensuring guests' best possible stay. The on-site restaurant was another highlight. It offered excellent value for money, a wide menu selection, and always fresh and delicious food. Breakfast deserves a special mention—it was generous, varied, and absolutely fantastic, enough to set you up for a full day of exploring. The hotel also has a rich history tied to the old funicular railway, which adds a fascinating layer to your stay. Talking with staff and seeing touches of this history around the property made the experience even more unique. Practical details were just as impressive: there’s plenty of secure parking for cars and motorbikes, and the location is excellent for exploring the region. With a car, we could easily reach Lake Como, Switzerland, and the surrounding villages, each full of charm, restaurants, and cafés. The roads in the area are well-maintained and made for enjoyable drives. All in all, Hotel Funicolare is absolutely brilliant. Whether travelling as a family, a couple, or solo, it’s the perfect place to stay. The value for money is outstanding, the comfort and cleanliness are faultless, and the atmosphere is second to none.

Travel back in time and enjoy the view. Bring your own drinking cups...

The only things you get in the "prestige" room is a useless TV, a very loud fan, two paper cups, and soap in the bathroom. No kettle, not even drinking glasses, no amenities whatsoever. There is a mini fridge. The "safe" is a joke, given that it's not bolted down. There is no shower curtain so you have to shower sitting down, unless you want to flood the bathroom. The walls are paper thin so you can hear the neighbors snoring at night. The elevator and hallways smell of moth balls. The light in the staircase was broken and nobody fixed it during our stay (safety hazard). Given the heat, I closed the balcony shutter in the morning to keep the sun out, but after we came back room service had opened the shutter and the room had heated up significantly. Again: you don't come here because of the hotel itself...

Let's be clear: you don't come here because it's a great hotel. In fact, it's old, run down, and the rooms are extremely spartan. Especially considering the price. You come here to admire the amazing view and to enjoy the time-travel ambience. It's an amazing spot. That said, the hotel does provide the barest minimum necessary: a clean bed and a clean bathroom, so that's good. The staff is friendly, and the food is quite decent (although nothing special).
