Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United StatesGuests are given the keys to the castle and invited to roam about at their leisure. The tour was informative. Breakfast was wonderful as well as the serving staff. The host was exceptional and made my stay memorable. Do try the appertivio offered for 20 Euros per person. Quite lovely.

United KingdomOur room was a little small with one window. Because it was very hot - but that’s to be expected these days - the temperature in the room was very uncomfortable. We just could not sleep. It only got manageable around 4am. So after two nights we were a little tired! We suggest a fan on the ceiling of a self contained air conditioner would remedy the problem.
This is a magical place to stay. The castle is magnificent and the staff could not have been more helpful. The breakfast is wonderful. The views are stunning.

United StatesThe hot water was extremely hot and came out of a different spigot than the cold water, so washing my hands and face was complicated.
This place is absolutely incredible. I had an absolutely magical stay. The views, the easy access to the small town, and the charm of this place makes it worth staying multiple times. The breakfast was incredible. The staff was so lovely. The VIEWS. I had so much fun exploring the castle. The beds were even comfortable in my bedroom that was full of character. I would come back again and again!

IsraelWe have stayed in many castles around Europe looking for places which would give us first hand experience with the past, valuing authenticity, hospitality and personality of the hosts. We can assure that Castello Malaspina di Fosdinovo is in the top of our list of favourites. This property that goes back to the 11th century is still in possession of the Malaspina family and the current owner Pietro comes to stay in his family “country house” every year. The concept of making it a home to the guests where they can freely explore the castle rooms and halls filled with authentic furniture and artefacts is brilliant. Many thanks to Ambra for being a fantastic host!

United KingdomOur only issue, which is not the fault of the staff or venue, but my own accessibility needs. I can manage steps with a bannister so I was OK but in a couple of places the handrail ended before the steps, and the bathroom shower was in the bath and difficult for me to reach. But quite honestly for such an historic castle, it was great!
Its a stunning location, steeped in history, and our room was large and ensuite, with a great view.

United StatesI would love a tour of the property with information about the history.
This place is magical! A very old but still very beautiful castle that made us feel like royalty. I loved the freedom to explore the property, the perks of tea, water and biscuits. And the breakfast was fantastic! Really wanted to stay longer!

Romania- nothing to mention
- everyone was extremely nice - staff was always helpful - experience of living in such an old castle was amazing - the interior garden and terrace were exceptional. The views on the walls at night are breath taking - would definitely recommend a stay here if you plan to visit cinque terre since La Spezia is only 20-25 min drive away

CanadaThe chairs in the relaxing outdoor areas were not comfortable, changing them to a more comfortable set would go a long way to enjoying these spaces.
Breakfast was good, The grounds and relaxing locations in the castle had perfect spots to relax in. The basic amenities were just fine, to change to update would impact with the ambience of living in an old castle. The village around the castle is worth exploring as are the local cafe/restaurants.

PolandThere is absolutely nothing that I could dislike here.
This is wonderful, well maintained and at the same time a very authentic castle. Unlike other castles which I visited, this one really feels authentic and is renovated to the level where you still can feel the real castle. We were well informed by the staff about everything that we had to know and greeted warmly. What was really great - you have nearly the whole castle available - you can relax not only in your room but at whatever time or the day or night you like, you can wander around the castle and its walls. The view is amazing and impossible to describe. The room was as great as the castle itself - the room was clean, and the bed was comfortable. Breakfast was amazing - we could eat local food, a variety of not only sweets but also cheese and hams. There was also a nice option of drinks such as drinkable honey. If you wish to have a great time in a real castle located in a real medieval town adding to that wonderful coastal view - this place marks all spots.

CanadaNot having a comfortable deck chair to sit on to enjoy the private terrace. It is worth noting that if you change to current atmosphere of the authentic medieval experience by over-modernizing, you would be missing the whole point of being in the castle.
Breakfast was plentiful. Location was perfect for us. It was peaceful. The castle maintained its authenticity. The experience of the castle and village was excellent! The staff were outstanding.

SwedenA medieval stone castle sets some specific limitations. Despite thick walls, the rooms are quite noise-sensitive (largely because of simple wooden doors). Guests need to keep this in mind out of consideration of each other.
You have to take this place for what it is. It is not a luxury hotel; facilities are quite simple (like a pretty chilly bathroom without heating), and there are plenty of staircases to climb. But it is an absolutely adorable medieval castle, towering over a little village up in the hills, with amazing views and fantastic staff. The location is great for a little get-away and to experience northern Tuscany. Winding roads leading up to a cute village on a hill (depending on GPS system, your map can put you on a road with lots of hair-pin curves but decent width to meet cars, or a more straight road where meeting traffic becomes a nervous challenge). The village of Fosdinovo also has a great restaurant, the Quinta Terra. Very friendly staff and great atmosphere among stone vaults. Excellent country-side food that would easily compete with many of the better restaurants in Florence. The castle is a fantastic experience in Italian history and it's great to be able to freely walk around among its many rooms and up on its impressive fortification walls - daytime or nighttime. Sitting on one of the (shared) terraces for our own little "aperitif moment" was great. Our room was of good size, with a comfortable bed and a large radiator that gave a cozy warmth to the room in chilly April nights. The bathroom was as large as the room, simple but fully adequate for our needs. No heating there, so mornings were "fresh" :-) Ambra and her colleagues in the staff are just amazing! So welcoming, helpful and friendly. From Ambra's warm greeting, support, and guidance, to one of the other ladies who, off-hours and from her own apartment, shouted instructions for us which key to use when we clearly didn't manage to get in at night! :-) They all made us feel like family. They also served a delicious, home-cooked breakfast, with yoghurt, spreads, toast, ham and cheese, and home-baked apricot pie.
