Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomSteps on the way into the apartment.
Was always in contact with the host, and was always checking we were OK, giving us local information, and help. Apartment was clean and well kept. The view was incredible and location was excellent, you just have to be a little careful of the steps on the way too the apartment. We would definitely recommend.

AustraliaWe loved the experience of sleeping in a grotto for 2 nights. It’s in a super convenient location and the instructions on how to get there and what carpark to park were very clear. It was nice and cool in summer. Matera is beautiful for wandering around and all the drinks and restaurant recommendations were great too!

United KingdomThe only real issue is the lack of kitchen, the only facilities are a sink, fridge, kettle and a coffee machine. There is no hob or cooking equipment. The bathroom is compact but perfectly adequate.
The reason to visit Matera is to see the Sassi so it’s a must in my opinion to stay in a Casa Grotta. This apartment has it all. Firstly accessible from Piazza Vittorio Veneto, (the gateway is next to the cheese shop on the passage to the Il Terrazzino restaurant.) The apartment enters via a small balcony into a large lounge/dining area with a sofa bed. The first bedroom is on the mezzanine above, the only windows are by this entrance. You then step down to a small kit he and the bathroom. There are more steps down to a large area that serves as a sitting area with a glassed over well, you then descend down into the last bedroom. Both these rooms are in manmade caves. The apartment is large and has a great location. The view from the small balcony is into the Sassi towards the Cathedral. There is parking in the multi storey car park either in Via Rocco Scotellaro (2 days €48) or the one in Via Lanera (2 days €40), both are secure the first is 5 minutes away the second 10 minutes.

United StatesCasamata Matera was one of the most unique places in which I have ever stayed. It's not often one finds high quality accommodations in a cave. The apartment was perfect for my short stay. It had everything I needed and was very comfy! Fabiana was great and I really appreciate her being able to make the home available a little earlier than usual. The self-check-in was very welcomed and included a video to help people get to the entrance of the home from a maze of roads and old walkways of Matera. The sunset views from the private balcony were amazing. Definitely recommend!

SingaporeThe host was very friendly and gave excellent instructions on how to get to the apartment. It is quite difficult to use Google maps there so the video was much appreciated. The apartment was well stocked with coffee, tea, utensils and fridge. There was a lovely terrace as well! When the windows are closed, it is very quiet within.

United StatesDown inside the Sassi district. Lots of stairs (50ish?), but my 82 year old father managed just fine. We rented both apartments and they were both equally special. Communication and instructions were easy and well-timed. Everything was wonderful!

United KingdomEverything was perfect
We had an incredible stay at Casamata in Matera! A big thank you to our wonderful host, Fabiana, for being so accommodating with both an early check-in and late check-out. The location was perfect—right in the heart of the old town, making it easy to explore the stunning surroundings. The apartment itself was beautiful, spacious, and had an amazing private covered terrace where we could relax. The bathroom, carved into the rock, added such a unique and cool touch to the experience. Everything was absolutely perfect, and we can’t wait to return!

SwitzerlandA very spacious and comfortable space, and having the experience to stay in an original cave was the cherry on top. We read some past reviews talking about the humidity and the sand on the beds. If they had spent more time learning about Matera and what the caves are made if, they might have appreciated how historical that cave was, and that it carved from sandstone hundreds of years ago, which made it very special. To deal with the humidity, we turned on the dehumidifier during the day, and turned it off before sleeping. The bed had an extra sheet that we could be under, protecting us from the sand. It was in all a very special experience. The cave also included a private cistern which is part of the UNESCO heritage.
