Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

AustraliaNothing. We loved our stay.
What an incredible little Casa! Located on one of the main streets of Matera made it a central hub for exploring the city, yet it was still very peaceful each night. Beds and pillows were super comfy. You have to try Pasteggiando while you're in town - delicious pasta (and no coperto!).

United KingdomThe owner is super helpful! Provide everything we need, excellent location, just minutes away from some view points and famous attraction. There are 2 rooms in our house, one of them is a cave room, so we can still experience living(sleeping) in a cave as well as how the people in Matera living back in 1920s at the same time. Highly recommend especially family travel!

Superb property I feel very privileged to have stayed in a property part of which pre-dates recorded history. The hosts were exceptionally helpful they picked us up and dropped us off at the bus station which made our arrival and departure much easier than I was expecting. They also sent us some great suggestions for viewpoints and restaurants around town all of which worked out really well. This is a great area to stay in Matera there are beautiful view points near by and lots of bars restaurants on the street which is thankfully fairly flat. I would stay here again

LithuaniaIt was extraordinary experience! To live in this historically rich but still very comfortable cave-apartment was one of multiple highlights of our visit to magical Matera. We loved it from the first to last second. The hosting family was very welcoming and helpful offering a parking for our car and driving us to the casacontini in the heart of the Sassi Matera, despite our delayed landing and very late arrival. Thanks a lot and all the best!

United StatesCasa Contini was a fantastic place to stay—the location couldn’t be better for exploring Matera on foot, with all the main sights just steps away. The hosts were incredibly helpful, especially with parking and arranging a transfer to and from the accommodation, which made everything smooth and stress-free. The apartment itself was clean, comfortable, and had everything we needed for a great visit. The building itself is part set inside a traditional cave, which gave our stay a truly unique and authentic feel. We highly recommend Casa Contini to anyone staying in Matera!

Casa Contini was such a beautiful place to stay in Matera. We felt so blessed, given how authentic the cave like apartment was. As we went on tours to see some of the original dwellings, we said to ourselves that we didn’t even need to bother because we were staying in one!! Casa Contini had that authentic feel with all the modern comforts that made our stay extremely enjoyable.

United StatesI recently stayed at the charming Casa Contini, nestled in the heart of Matera's historic Sasso Caveoso district—one of the two iconic neighborhoods that make up the Sassi di Matera. The location was absolutely ideal, offering easy access to many of the city’s main attractions. From Casa Contini, it was just a short walk to scenic photo spots, local shops, excellent restaurants, a convenient supermarket, and the renowned Rupestrian churches that make Matera so unique. The setting offered the perfect blend of history, convenience, and atmosphere for an unforgettable stay. Casa Contini offers a rich glimpse into the past, preserving the character and charm of the generations who once lived there. From the beautiful patterned floor tiles and historical artifacts to the spacious, cave-carved bedroom, every detail tells a story. The kitchen retains its original carved wall niches, once used for storing condiments, and a small, square clerestory window—manually operated and set high on the front wall—not only fills the space with natural light and a bright, airy atmosphere, but also offers a direct view of the iconic rock church, Santa Maria de Idris. These elements—and many more—make a stay at Casa Contini a uniquely immersive experience in Matera’s living history. Our hosts, Mario and his son Lorenzo, were exceptional—gracious, reliable, and always ready to help. They welcomed us warmly, arranged secure parking, and personally drove us to Casa Contini, located in a restricted traffic zone. They carried our luggage up the short stairway and carefully explained everything about the home and nearby area. Their thoughtful local recommendations and prompt replies—often within minutes—made everything easy, from lighting the stove to using the washing machine. Their attentiveness and kindness made our stay smooth, relaxed, and truly memorable.

United StatesThe WiFi connection was kind of weak as we were inside a cave.
I did a lot of research before booking this cave apartment, and the landlord providing free transportation to the apartment is very important for the traveler with heavy luggage. It made our stay much easier to avoid to carry the luggages up and down the stairs . The central location is easy to visit all the attractions. The landlord and his father are so kind. They provided us with free parking and drove my family to the apartment inside ZTL zone. When we arrived at the apartment, I realized I left my phone inside the car, about a 10 minute drive away, and he took me to retrieve the phone. A while later when they found the lights of my car were flashing, the father even found us in a restaurant and informed us of the problem. We deeply appreciated their effort and care. We highly recommend this lovely cave apartment and are so thankful and touched to the owners for a beyond wonderful stay!

United StatesNothing.
What an incredible experience. Our host, Lorenzo, met us on a very rainy day to drive us to the property. Non-resident cars are not allowed in the historical city and so Lorenzo (and later his father) kindly drove us to and from the property to our vehicle, which we did not need during our two-night stay. Matera is absolutely amazing. We spent almost every waking hour exploring the many historical and cultural sites of Matera, and this apartment had us right in the center serving as a perfect location for sightseeing. This is a traditional style apartment with some rooms particially built into the side of the mountain. It's spacious and had all the amenities we needed: including nice kitchen, large dining room/den, as well as large comfortable bedroom(s) and a great shower. It was rather cold in Matera at night but the apartment had an excellent heating system that kept the place warm. Lorenzo was extremely kind and helpful; he sent me lots of information about places to eat and see in the town. I highly recommend this property. Would love to return one day. Thanks Lorenzo!

BulgariaThis is easily one of the best accomodations I've stayed at and looks even better than the photos. The host Lorenzo was exceptionally hospitable and arranged for his father to pick us up from the train station and drive us to the house. Additionally, communication with him was very smooth and fast. He allowed an earlier check-in, so that we can directly explore the city instead of looking for a place to leave our luggage. He also made sure to recommend the best spots. The apartment itself was very cozy and clean and the overall feel of the place really helped us immerse ourselves fully in Matera's unique atmosphere. The beds were very comfortable as well. Apart from that, the location couldn't be better - it is equally close to important tourist atractions and very good restaurants. The only thing I regret is not staying longer, but I plan on fixing that mistake as soon as I can. :)

United StatesNothing. We loved the whole experience!
Our first experience with this property was Lorenzo picking us up from a free parking area they had designated for us. He was so warm, kind, and helpful with our luggage. As we drove to the property, he explained some of the history of Matera. When I first saw Matera as we drove in, it blew my mind. It’s so beautiful and hard to put into words how fascinating it is. Staying in Lorenza’s family cave house was a very special experience. I felt as if I had gone back in time. The furniture is original as well as all of the decorations. Lorenzo was so helpful with restaurant suggestions, points of interest, and any questions we had. We felt very well taken care of. We had an early checkout and Lorenzo’s dad was so kind to pick us up so early and take us to our car. We highly recommend a guided tour of Matera. The history is fascinating. Also a visit to Casa Grotta nei Sassi di Matera is well worth a visit. We watched a documentary there that gave a lot of information. And don’t forget to hike across the gorge to the Belvedere. Epic views! Thank you to Lorenzo and his dad for making our visit to Matera so special. It will remain in our hearts forever. Arrivederci!
