Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomNothing, room is advertised and priced as budget. Perfectly reasonable.
Hendro is a super friendly guy full of tips about the area and very helpful. He has three properties which explains some of the other reviews saying the check in was confusing, but I found him to be communicative via WhatsApp. He sent me his location so I arrived at the correct place. You get free breakfast at his family warung near the beach which also has the surf boards you can rent for cheaper than on the main beach. I stayed in the budget room and the facilities are simple, but perfectly adequate and but reflect the bargain price. Hendro did show me the luxury room which was very nice, but also more expensive. Thank you for the fun stay! :)

IndonesiaPak Hendro is a helpful, obliging and friendly host who has a very detailed knowledge of the area around Pulau Merah. He was willing to help with any requests and has many good connections in the town. The breakfasts were terrific and in a great location on the beach.

IndonesiaThis is a SCAM. I booked 3 rooms, 2 through booking.com and one through Agoda. The facility DID NOT EXIST. We arrived at the address at about 7.30 pm. An old lady opened the door, and called HENDRO, supposedly the owner of Hendro's surf camp. I spoke to him. He said that the 2 regular rooms are in separate locations from the one VIP room which is also in different place. He said he will ask someone from different homestay tonoick us up. I said I don't want to stay in separate location from my family. Then he said "Let me just canceled it so you don't get charged by booking.com"

United StatesArrival was a bit confusing as I didn’t meet Hendro till later. He eventually came by in the evening to make a plan for the coming days.
Pulau Merah is near the famous surf of G-land, but not close enough to visit without some help (and a jeep). Hendro took out several days to tour me through the mangroves (introducing me to the famous walking fish!), journey into the jungle, and finally visit the surf I’ve heard about for years. Along the way we met a bunch of his friends and I picked up some Indonesian too! If you’re arriving with interest in Alas Purwo national park, surfing G-land, or any number of other activities in the vicinity, I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending Hendro as your host and guide.

MexicoIt was all great.
This is the place to stay if you are coming to Red Island (Pulau Merah). The room has everything you need and it's great for the price, don't expect a luxury room, there's no such things for this price. Hendro is an amazing and charming host, he gave me a great local experience and he can give you tours to Alas Purwo National Park. The breakfast at his warung is usually a delicious banana pancake with coffee/tea but I think you can order something else. The place is just 1 minute from the beach riding a scooter.

DenmarkGreat recommendation. Not because of the quality of the room, it's an Ok simple room, but because of the host Hendro and his family who made my stay in Pulau Merah an extremely nice experience.

GermanyIt was a bit noisy at night in the host family because they were on the main road. But you get used to it and we slept well. A bigger / second blanket would be nice.
The host Hendro is the best host I have ever had. We went on many tours with him, including the Alas Purwo National Park and the Tumpak Sewu Waterfalls. He also taught us how to surf, and you can hire surfboards from his warung, which serves delicious food at a reasonable price. He also offers a shuttle service to Malang to visit Bromo, which was amazing! Thank you for a lovely time, we really enjoyed our stay.

ItalyThe shower and rooms could do with a bit of maintenance, but this is something we have encounter in lots of places in Indonesia as businesses are still recovering from the pandemic.
This place was a real find. Just a short walk to the beach and very affordable. The room is simple but it has all you need. What made our stay really great was the owner, Hendro, who is an absolutely outstanding host! Hendro is very approachable and has a wealth of info about the area and activities. He is also a great guide and we went with him for a great boat tour of the mangroves just outside the national park. He also runs a restaurant at the beach, where we got a delicious dragon fruit welcome drink. Highly recommended! :)

DenmarkThe shower strength was weak, making it hard to shower
We were met by Hendro, a very nice host! We got a welcome drink by the restaurant he has just by the beach (200m away). This is also where we got our breakfast which were very nice and filling banana pancakes. He has a banana tree just around the corner and we got soo many small bananas for a snack. Hendro is very talkative and will gladly show you the nice places around Pulau Merah and can provide you with transport to and from his homestay if requested. We only stayed for one night, but wished that we could have stayed longer due to the nice area and vibes the place was giving. The dinner at his restaurant was really nice as well - we recommend trying local food! Hendro also helped us getting surfing lessons for very cheap, and the life guards were very kind and good at teaching us surfing. you get one instructor per person and surfboard availability for the entire day. The waves are best in the morning and evening, so it is a good idea to start the day early, before the sun gets too strong. Be aware to stay within the lifeguard flags, as the currents can we very strong on the far ends of the beach. We would definitely go back to Hendro as we had an amazing and pleasant stay!

IndonesiaThe best Homestay I ever stayed at!! Great value for a private double bedroom with ensuite bathroom with free delicious breakfast. There is a garden as well so it’s a really nice ambiance, and the beach is already a few meters behind where the surf is. Hospitality is beyond perfection! Bapak Hendro & his family are one of the kindest people! I arrived in Pulau Merah in the evening with an injury and they made sure I am taken care of all the time. They even make sure I get meals and don’t go hungry because of my immobilized state. This homestay exceeded my expectations of a homestay, it is not just a guest house, it is “Home” where you are treated like family. I will come back for sure again! It is a very refreshing place to come to if you are coming from the busyness of South Bali. Also try their warung called Warung Hendro, delicious food made with love located right on the beach!
