Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomUnfortunately my verandah was in full view of the old matriarch of the family lifting her sarong to urinate on the path in front of her. Not a great sight while having breakfast , but she excuses many things. Whilst cock fighting is the norm in Bali it upset me to see it happening at the property on the morning I left. This animal cruelty is really not acceptable. The latter incident spoilt my stay at Penol house.
The property was a large extended family homestay, all of whom were friendly and approachable. The host family were great and included me in their full moon temple visit.

AustraliaNo issues, just remember it’s a homestay so there may be people and animals making some noises in the morning. It’s kind of a nice ambience tho.
A beautiful quiet homestay away from central town where it’s busy, but still close enough for a cheap scooter ride in. Really friendly family and locals, helped me with my bags, and let me leave all my stuff there after check out so I could explore for the day. A nice, simple, affordable place to stay in ubud.

United KingdomThe chickens being very loud early in the morning 🤣
In terms of value for money, it doesn’t get much better than this. The room is comfortable and the bathroom is clean, but the families around the property and the people that run Penol house are the best part, they are accommodating to any need and always there to make your life as easy as possible.

FranceWe had an amazing stay at Penol House. The staff is really nice, welcoming and helpful. They helped us to get food and delivered it to us as we arrived late. The room is clean and has a nice view. It’s a good location, you can walk around and find restaurants. But it’s aswell really easy and quick to get a taxi to go to the center of Ubud.

United KingdomQuite a lot of bugs and loud environment. Location was a little out the way of Ubud centre, need to either rent a bike or get taxis. (This wasn’t an issue for us but could be for others)
Lovely view from our room (balcony room). The bed was comfortable and big. Breakfast was really nice and good value for money (would definitely recommend the banana pancakes). Era was amazing and we throughly enjoyed the Ubud tour offered! He even took us to places which weren’t on the tour.

GermanyIt was quite noisy in the early morning (roosters & blasting music). There also is no door to the bathroom.
The owners were really friendly and welcoming. The room itself was just as in the pictures.

IndonesiaIn the mornings when the locals start their morning ceremonies it can get quite loud so take some caution on that
If you want to get a genuine experience of the local living you should definetly book here. Upon arriving you will be greeted by the most friendly and loving family living here. The location is really good because its not too far from all the main locations in Ubud and also not in the middle of everything so its still really peaceful. The place is quite new so the rooms are clean and you get warm water for the shower. AC works fine and has great cooling qualities for the room. Breakfast options are also really great. They also have masseuses that can come into your room and massage you. As any other place this place also has bugs like ants, little thermites and big paper wasps BUT the owners and staff can provide you with a powerful insect killing spray wich will help you alot.

FinlandUnforgettable experience. There was a three day ceremony going on while our stay and we were also invited to the celebration. Highly recommend this place if you want to experience authentic balinese living. The family is very kind and welcoming. Also the nesting season of herons is a wonderful thing to see. The rooms are quite new so they are fresh and clean. Nice breakfast.

Germanyauthentic experience in ubud! you live with a big family on one property they are very welcoming and kind. they can also help you to book tours. the accommodation is 5-10minutes away from ubud center with the scooter, you can also rent scooters via the family. nevertheless you need to know that it’s a big family with kids and chickens and that it will be loud in the morning in front of your door (around 7 a.m.).
