How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewWe enjoyed so much our stay at Banyuwangi thanks to our host, Agus, whom facilited everything for us. Thanks to him, we had the best guide we could hope for to hike up the Kawah Ijen and he managed every part of the trip organisation (medical certificate, going to and from the base camp, supplies as headlamp, gazmask, food and water) and even rent him a scooter to explore Banyuwangi. The room was very clean, comfortable and calm and very well situated juste in front of the trainstation. Moreover Agus really cared about us having a great time. Overall, staying at this hostel was a great value for the money we spend and an incredible human experience. Thank you so much Agus !
Not staying longer !

Verified reviewconvenient location - Right in front of train station, with restaurant. Hostel' owner offers Ijen tours with very clear details. Suitable for short rest before trekking Ijen.
The rooms smelt moldy like long closed rooms.

Verified reviewQuiet and comfortable. There is no signage at the property. Google maps will indicate to you the wrong location. Just head towards the shop for about 50metres and the property is at the row of shops opposite the train station.
No hot water.

Verified reviewI only spent one night at Nitha's homestay and I did the overnight trekking to Ijen, so I did not really sleep at the facility. However I can confirm that Agus and his wife are lovely and very kind. The room was basic but clean and comfortable, just what you would expect from a classic homestay. Agus helped me book the trekking to Ijen and he was very lovely when I had an unpleasant experience with the tour guide.

Verified reviewLocation was so ideal, attached was a really affordable local restaurant, opposite was the train station which had an Alfamart in it! Everyone was really friendly and helpful - highly recommend if you’re on a budget! Also the bike we rented from them was really good quality.
We chose the room with just a fan so it was a bit hot but was as we expected and definitely good for the price we payed

Verified review- Very convenient location- next to the train station with some restaurants/shops within walking distance - Room was clean, with basic facilities but fine for 1 night - Easy to book tour through accommodation (it is priced at 450K PP) - The staff bought us breakfast after our tour which was very kind and appreciated
- The room had no AC (which is fine) but the fan didn’t work very well so it was very hot in the room - The bed was quite uncomfortable and we found the sheets quite itchy (though maybe we are just being fussy)

Verified reviewAbsolutely superb Homestay run by a wonderful family, the owners Agus and his wife were great hosts and helped us to arrange our Ijen trip. The Homestay itself is great value and directly opposite the brand new Banyuwangi kota station which was really convenient, the tour of Ijen was one of the most amazing experiences of our whole trip and was really reasonably priced. Agus was exceptionally kind and attentive and really made us feel at home, we had ice tea when we arrived and tea and fruit when we returned from Ijen. The food at the family’s restaurant was really tasty and very affordable. If you’re visiting Banyuwangi I would absolutely stay here it was more than we could have hoped for from start to finish. Thank you for the wonderful experience !

Verified reviewjust one step from the station gate, the atmosphere is quiet even though it is close to the train station. the room is clean. The owner is friendly and you can rent a motorbike and they even provide trip package services to several tourist destinations in Banyuwangi.
There are no amenities except towels and blanket. Also no drinking water on your room table unless you ask for a refill of drinking water at the reception desk, so prepare your tumbler.

Verified reviewWe were received by Agus' family very warmly, they are all very service minded and friendly. Agus was a great host who speaks great English, he organized a midnight tour for us on a short notice. The location is convenient if you need to take the train, the Kota station is just a minute away. There are plenty of local small shops and warungs along the road we're you can get a meal or snacks and drinks. The room was quite big, the bed was alright. We had to ask for a bigger blanket which Agus kindly provided. Also, the shower does have hot water, just the red and blue markings are turned around.
Train horns can be heard from 5 am to late in the evening, so bring earplugs. It gets light in the room in the morning and an eye mask is also nice to have.
