How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.

All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. I had the worst case of bed bugs, really bad bites all over. The toilets were dirty all the time, the room was noisy, people there were noisy. It’s a party hostel, with you don’t care about sleeping and hygiene the location is nice.

While our housekeeping team has been doing thorough cleaning on dorm rooms, we understand that issues like this can occasionally happen in a tropical island. To address this, our team has scheduled a full pest control service in which the dorms will be closed to ensure a complete extermination of any potential bed bugs. We also regret to learn about the cleanliness issue. As bathrooms are shared spaces, the consideration of other guests plays a role in keeping them tidy between cleanings. We do encourage everyone to be mindful of others and maintain a clean space after each use. Please know that should you find the bathroom needs attention during your stay, our team members are always happy to assist and provide a re-clean upon request. Moreover, Mad Monkey is a social and party hostel and is known for its lively atmosphere. Verified reviewThis hostel is on the other side of the island. So you need to be ready to walk across about a 30min walk. For us it was much worthwhile since the beach is most beautiful there. We did not use the horses as they are very badly treated. The pool is cool, the restaurant is okay. Ice coffee are great. Beds are okay. 3 beds in a room so pretty intimate in a way
We reserved a only female dorm and a girl brought back a guy during the night. As we know it’s not the hostel’s fault but I which there was more warnings or explanations about privacy specially for only female dorm. I was super uncomfortable when a second pair of feet that was right next to me and it was a man that I didn’t know. The bathrooms are horrible. There need to be more cleaning, sinks, counters, showers. People leave their stuff and it’s gross. We almost wanted to leave because of the cleanness of the bathrooms.

In fact, something happened to me while we were on a diving trip. I will not talk about the trip programs or the staff. They were professional. I only did not like some of the people who were with us and were staying in the same hostel. Their treatment of me was somewhat disrespectful and made me sad. I hope the trip ends as soon as possible so that I can return to the hostel. I will not blame the hostel, but I want to point out something. It tells people that we are brothers, family, and friends here, and there is no distinction between this and that. It tells them that there is no place for racism between us. That is all. Verified reviewLocated on the West side of Gili T, it’s in the perfect spot for those idyllic sunsets! Check in was quick but you had to pay a 50K IDR deposit (£2.50 GBP which seemed very unnecessary). Bar prices were cheap. The staff were helpful.
I understand it’s a hostel but we paid for a separate double room and it still felt like we were in a hostel. There was no hot running water in the room - for me this a basic hygiene necessity- also 3 days of cold showers isn’t nice. We felt very unsafe at night, our door was shaken on a number of occasions with drunk people trying to get in to the wrong hut. The bed was hard uncomfortable.

We understand it may seem unnecessary, but we assure all guests that it is fully refundable upon check-out and once the key is returned. We're especially alarmed to hear about the security concerns. We take the safety and security of our guests very seriously, and have escalated this with the team. We do ask everyone to be considerate, and our security team will intervene as needed, especially when someone is being disruptive to an extreme degree or if it is reported to us during that time. We also apologize for the lack of water and uncomfortable beds during your stay. The hostel has unfortunately experienced a temporary issue with the water heating system, which has since been resolved. We sincerely apologize that we failed to meet your expectations. Your feedback is crucial for us in identifying critical areas for improvement, and we are committed to learning from this experience.
