Clean apartment and beautiful nature, but mold smell and unwelcoming neighbors made it less pleasant

The apartment is located in a very old socialist-era building. Although it was clean, there was a strong and persistent smell of mold inside. The two sofas used as beds appeared very old and uncomfortable. The balcony had not been cleaned — there were many spiderwebs, and the surrounding glass panels were cracked or worn. One night, a neighbor knocked on our door at 2 a.m. to complain that we had left the balcony light on. It felt intrusive and unwelcoming. Parking is on grass. On the first day, a neighbor approached me asking to “re-park,” even though I parked the car exactly as instructed by the host. The general feeling was that outsiders were not particularly welcome. The so-called “private beach” is actually a boat dock area with small vessels moored and wild vegetation. It is not suitable for swimming. We saw snakes in the water, and as soon as we stepped on the shore, we were swarmed by tiny beetles crawling over our bodies and towels. It was not dangerous, but certainly unpleasant. On our first day, we saw two police cars on the same street. The host told us there had been a nearby break-in. When we asked whether the area is generally safe, she replied that it is “probably safe in tourist areas.” That didn’t feel very reassuring. We also found shopping in local supermarkets (such as Aldi and Lidl) quite difficult. There were large crowds regardless of time or day, everything was in Hungarian and Hungarian forints, and staff made no effort to bridge the language barrier. The experience was confusing and stressful, especially for first-time visitors. Two days before arrival, I realized the apartment didn’t have the bed type we needed. Booking.com confirmed that cancellation was possible, but the host replied that she would suffer financial loss if I cancelled. Out of consideration, I did not cancel — but in retrospect, I believe no real financial damage would have occurred, especially since it was not yet peak season.

The apartment itself was clean and mostly furnished with newer IKEA pieces. The bathroom was small, but clean and functional. The surrounding nature is beautiful. Just a few meters from the building, there’s a dense forest that creates a peaceful atmosphere filled with natural sounds — birds, frogs, and rustling leaves. Hungary in general left a very good impression on us. The roads were wide, clean, and well maintained, with no visible trash. Public areas were quiet and respectful. People seemed calm and considerate. We especially appreciated the beautiful beach about 1 km from the apartment — well-kept, with large old trees and a peaceful setting ideal for swimming. Even during busier hours, it never felt crowded. The overall feeling in Hungary was one of calm, order, and connection to nature.
