The Hostal structure has quite thin walls so it can get quite noisy at night/early morning with fireworks, dogs and cockerels (not the Hostals’ fault) so bring earplugs.

Gorgeous little hostel with a lovely terrace that has views of the lake and volcanos. Big shared kitchen to cook meals. Friendly staff and some cute cats and dogs! Great location, only a 5 min walk to the main area of San Marcos La Laguna.

I enjoyed my stay at Casa Madera very much. The location was brilliant, close to the market, restaurants and the boat dock. The staff were lovely and friendly. The hostel is very clean and the staff work hard to keep it that way. The cleaning lady who cleaned the rooms was also super sweet.

On the right site of the bed the floor was really sticky. It hasn’t got a closed window in the bathroom, so noise could get in. The fact the staff didn’t speak one word English. The amount of stray dogs that poo in the streets and bark a lot. I understand that the accommodation can’t help that, but the whole population of the island could get into action to catch these animals and remove them.

It’s nearby the docks, a nice spacious room and bathroom.

The toilet area is very tight. It would be great if there was a little more storage room, like a small wardrobe or bench, and some hanging space for a wet towel. Nights could be quite noisy.

This is a lovely, friendly hostel. The owners are really caring and welcoming. The room was spacious and very clean. The accommodation is located in a very central area of San Marcos. The place had a wonderful vibe.

It wasn't very clean. We booked a room with private balcony but it seems like nobody has stayed there in a while, so the room was pretty dusty and bedsheets are dusty too. The toilet lid has yellow stains. stray dogs started barking very intensely around 2am, so remember to bring ear plugs.

The view from balcony and rooftop was nice, and my private balcony has a small kitchen. The wood furniture are nice too.

The family who own the hostel use the kitchen all the time, it can get crowded and they don’t clean up immediately after themselves so they filled up the sinks with plates and there were lots of flies The toilet and shower blocks also weren’t that nice

We shared one of the double private rooms which was a good size and very comfortable - and the view from the window was amazing! We loved the roof terrace as well, and the staff were very kind (we were using the kitchen at the same time one of the nights and they gave us one of their delicious tamales to have with our food). Would definitely recommend for a few nights stay!

The WiFi was spotty but we wasn’t expecting it to be great and made sure we stayed when we didn’t really need to use the internet.

We stayed in the private apartment and it was glorious! We had a huge outside area which we chilled on most evenings, we actually stayed in the apartment more than we normally would because of this area. The staff were super friendly it was very clean and great location.

Amazing views and great kitchen! The beds were comfortable and had curtains. They are building new bathrooms, which is so needed for the communal bathrooms. The showers didn’t really get hot, which was a bummer. Getting them to get warm even was somewhat of a puzzle.

It was SO loud at night. Especially since it wasn’t more than a wooden shack. Even with ear plugs it was very hard to sleep due to really loud dogs barking all night.

The view from the upstairs terrace is fabulous. They have hammocks and benches to allow you to pass your down time with a view of the Laguna. Usually, in a hostel, the staff are nice, but here they treat you like old friends. There's a great kitchen with refrigeration and just a fantastic vibe.

There wasn't really anything we didn't like. The hosts made sure to let us know, that the area can be a bit noisy from dogs, hens etc. why they recommend getting ear plugs (which definitely is needed!). During the evening it's a bit warm and you could've used a fan, but the temperature dropped during the night.

Such kind staff, real powerladies running the place. We loved the laid-back vibes at the place. The common areas looked good and inviting. The view was fantastic from the rooftop, where we spent a lot of time. They have 3 hotspots of WIFI, which you get codes to during your check-in, which worked perfectly. The shower had hot water and a great pressure! Location close to everything and only 5 min. walk from the pier. The price is fantastic for everything you get from this great place!

Be aware of the outside noise. Construction during the day, and dogs etc during the night.. but this seems to be the case most places in San Marcos..
