Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomI had a great time. Nothing that I didn't like.
Hibiscus House is a lovely family-run hotel in Brufut village. I would describe it as a peaceful oasis surrounded by wildlife. Sarah and colleagues are extremely welcome and hospitable. As well as the excellent setting and comfortable rooms, Hibiscus House has a great menu and everything that you need to relax after a long day at work when on a business trip. I highly recommend it!

United KingdomConsidering we were often the only guests there, service was really quite slow - having said that Gambian culture is slow so if that isn’t what you want, maybe choose a different location for your holiday.
Hibiscus house was absolutely perfect for what we wanted - a tranquil oasis. A lovely Pool surrounded by trees and birds, good access to other parts of the country through use of the hotel driver and/or taxis. We wanted to be away from the main tourist part but able to access this when we wanted. It was also some of the most delicious food we had in the Gambia. We would definitely stay again.

United KingdomA bit of a hike on foot to get to supermarkets and some of the popular tourist areas, beaches etc. Taxis were also not very plentiful in the area - possibly because it was end of rainy season. All of this easily resolved though, by simply arranging from the hotel to get picked up by taxis which are not overly expensive, unless you are really on a shoe-string budget.
Sarah was lovely, and went out of her way to ensure I was comfortable, and able to work. Basics such as stable internet and power can be tricky in rainy season in Gambia, but there was a strong connection, and I was able to work remotely, while enjoying this little haven amongst the shrubbery and trees. Had a lovely dinner on the first night - inexpensive and tasty. The team were also very helpful with arranging taxis/tours that were fairly priced.

United KingdomPool was a quite cold and a bit small if you like to swim, but still enjoyable and essential to cool off! If you don't like dogs....there is a house guard dog that wanders around sniffing out any badness...although very placid and harmless if you are not a burglar!
Breakfast was a pleasant surprise, really nice fruit platter and choice of eggs how you like. fresh juice, great coffee and excellent service. Dinner was always a great choice, very talented chefs. Outstanding cocktails and great value for money overall. Entertainment from the house band was such fun. Great staff, wonderful vibe, lovely atmosphere and excellent management team.

United KingdomHotel could do with a refresh. The toilet in the bathroom wasn’t screwed into the floor properly so was wonky when in use. Few cockroaches in the room and saw mice around the hotel common areas. Some of the sunbeds were broken too and room quite dark.
The staff working at hibiscus house were friendly and helpful, especially Buba who gave us recommendations on the local area. The food was good, both breakfast and dinner.

GermanyI genuinely cannot think of anything I didn't like!
My favourite part was the beautiful garden full of lovely trees, plants and birdsong as well as the pool which was a great way to cool off. I also loved my room which was spacious, very comfortable and came with fridge, en suite shower and A/C. The hotel staff were fantastic, always ready to help, friendly and relaxed and at the same time very professional with plenty of tips on local places to visit. Great food too, such as butter fish and spicy chicken and recommend the delicious Gambian juice called Wonjo. I had a wonderful week at Hibiscus House - very much hope to go back some time.

United KingdomThe bathroom could have been a bit more modern. And more chocolate available.
We felt so relaxed when we were there. What a wonderful place to spend time, quiet and bright and green and peaceful. Comfortable places to sit, comfortable beds, a nice little pool, a great range of breakfast options and other food available (though I wish there was more chocolate!). But, best of all, were the staff. All the people who were there day to day were great, went above and beyond to make sure we felt comfortable and safe. Sarah was amazing - we had to move there after another hotel didn't work out, and we were stressed and one of us in tears, and Sarah accommodated us so late at night and was just absolutely everything we needed.

United KingdomNothing! All good!
Hibiscus House was a beautiful oasis in Gambia after travelling. We had to tear ourselves away. The staff were amazing and attentive without being in the slightest bit overbearing. Very helpful with advice on travelling on local buses, shared taxis which we followed successfully. Our room was welcoming and very comfortable. The gardens are well maintained and the pool delightful. The food is fabulous & you can select African dishes if you wish - I would recommend these they were delicious! Whilst we were there it had attracted a eclectic mix of guests who were wonderful to meet & share experiences. Sarah the owner’s pride in her staff and wanting guests to have the best experience of The Gambia & her accommodation was evident. We have been fortunate to stay in many different places on our travels over the years- Hibiscus House is special!

United KingdomHibiscus Hotel is a little Oasis of pools, gardens, flowers and exotic bird life perfectly located for enjoying a taste of real Gambia. Sarah and her charming team could not have been more welcoming and helpful and nothing was too much trouble. The meals were fantastic, freshly made to your order and the chef's local Gambian dishes were delicious. Breakfasts were fresh fruits, eggs of any kind, pancakes and warm breads with honey and peanut butter, coffee and fresh fruit juices. Yum!! A great, well stocked bar. The authentic bedrooms are spacious, well positioned around the pools, with comfy beds, great hot showers, ceiling fan & aircon, and everything works well. We enjoyed the 25 minute walk through the town to the wonderful beach and also exploring the neighbourhood of Brufut, meeting the local people and always felt safe and welcome. We loved our week and it suited us perfectly. If you are looking for a young person's holiday with nightlife, this is not for you. If you are looking to emmerse yourself in some genuine African charm, then look no further.

United KingdomThe whole experience at Hibiscus House offers something for everyone. You can treat your stay as a real 'retreat' or combine it with truly memorable day trips organised by the host. A delightful array of spectacular birds sing in the morning as you wake up and take your delicious breakfast. Crickets sound at night for the perfect nocturnal soundscape. The whole place and space feels like you have arrived at a piece of heaven on this earth.
