Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomI love everything about the West Dean C. Regularly visit. Deserves a dash more care with room cleaning. 5 start otherwise.
Everything.

United KingdomThe hairdryer had no thermostatic control and it blasted out air which was simply too hot. I could not hold it anywhere near my head.
Breakfast was good if you wanted a cooked meal but I would have liked a greater choice for continental style food. A bowl of fruit for example would have been very welcome. The large slices of pineapple and melon were a little difficult to eat without cutting them up.

Everything, building was amazing, the grounds were just fabulous, and all of the staff were so friendly. We also had breakfast included in the price, which included full English and yoghurt and pastries. I honestly couldn't fault our stay.

United KingdomNo AC, old windows, noisy on my side.
Location wise was perfect. I went there to stay the night before the Race to the King Ultra Marathon races. The only downside is that there is no Aircon and it was a bit too hot during the night. Also the windows are old and it can be noisy, especially if the room is facing the outside sitting area for the bar/restaurant. I would stay here again, if I would do the same race again, as it was a convenient location and good value for what I paid. To be honest they might have rooms with AC, but they might be also higher in price. I stayed in a single room, more like a dormitory for a student, which was still nice, as it reminded me of the period when I was a student.

AustriaI would have loved to attend one of the amazing art courses as well. But this would have been very expensive :(
It was the most surprising and special stay I‘ve ever been to. Sleeping in the college was like in a Harry Potter Movie and walking across the gardens feels like you‘re literally Alice in Wonderland. If you love a magic get away in the middle of nowhere, you will never forget this place — take your time to inhale the atmosphere, read literature in the library, play chess, dip in the pool or have a hot bath and go for stunning walks surrounded by flowers and animals ✨✨✨ coming back for sure!! Thank you so much 💖

United KingdomI was attending a wedding locally and West Dean College was in a perfect location. An excellent greeting on arrival from the Reception Desk team who were able to give me my room early. The College is housed in a beautiful historic building. My room was bright and freshly decorated. A highlight was sitting in the courtyard having a coffee and reading the newspaper, the following morning. A totally relaxing and convivial space. A real bonus was free entry to the magnificent West Dean Gardens. It was an amazing stay and without a doubt I will return. 🤩🤩

United KingdomSwimming pool tiny and longish walk from main building. Tennis courts unusable. Not a big problem, but a little misleading to advertise them as facilities.
Great location, access to West Dean gardens. Good breakfast, overall a very nice place to stay.

United KingdomThe room I stayed in was tiny - much smaller than the photos, and paper thin walls so I had the enjoyment of listening to someone snore all night.
Very friendly staff in a beautiful location. Close to everything I wanted to see on my stay, with the added bonus of free access to the gardens. Canteen on site which serves a fixed menu for dinner, and plenty of options for breakfast.

United KingdomNothing, but it's worth remembering that you're in an old building, which has seen some wear and tear in places.
Beautiful surroundings, great breakfast, friendly and helpful staff. Comfortable room overlooking the estate. Very clean. Bar on site. A very different experience to your run-of-the-mill hotel, there are amazing artworks all over the college. Free access to the gardens, which are a must-see, they were stunning in July. Will definitely return.

United KingdomMy bedroom window was minute, but it's an old building with character, so that's to be expected.
The location is wonderful. Very convenient for visiting places of interest in the area, and meeting up with friends. I can't comment on breakfast as I didn't eat it, but I did have a glass of wine in the bar one evening and that was very pleasant.

United KingdomEvening meal is extremely limited (only one vegetarian main course) and poor value as portions are also fairly small: essentially restaurant prices for canteen food. Supposedly hot food is cold at breakfast, and we should have preferred a room only arrangement in any case. A fridge in the room or a communal fridge would be useful in view of the relative isolation of the property and the limited catering facilities in-house. Emails not answered at the weekend.
Wonderful gardens, good accommodation and pleasant quiet ambience. Charming small swimming pool.

United KingdomThe evening meal given the price was not good value - it was OK but could do better.
Best part is that the gardens surrounding the college are great as is the arboretum up the hill and that you have access to these early morning and evening when others don't!
