How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewThe location was excellent and the hosts were very friendly, including the family dogs. Fabulous breakfast.
The house has such potential but needs extensive investment for this beautiful historic building.

Verified reviewWe had a great stay at Thrumster House as part of our NC500 trip. Catherine was a wonderful host and so welcoming, and the house itself is beautiful and full of traditional country charm. Breakfast in the morning was a particular highlight, and we enjoyed the company of the friendly dogs. Overall, it was a memorable and unique place to stay and we’d definitely recommend it.
The WiFi seemed a little temperamental: this wasn’t a huge issue for us, but may be more of a challenge for those who need to be connected.

Verified reviewThrumster House is an incredible, old laird's house, and you truly feel like royalty stepping into the spacious foyer and gallery. The rooms were decorated with really nice touches and were filled with personal memorabilia of the host family. Everything was very clean and charmingly done, breakfast was incredibly delicious and the host very kind and helpful. Thrumster House is the perfect place for anyone who ever visited a National Trust building and thought "I would like to spend a night here".

Verified reviewVery hospitable. It felt as though we were friends of the family rather than customers. A very relaxed atmosphere. The house is quite unique.
The road leading to the house from the main road was in a poor state.

Verified reviewOur stay at Thrumster house was an excellent and unique experience. The house is very large and full of charm and character. Evening meal and breakfast were most enjoyable. After breakfast the host took the time to show us the excavated broch in the grounds and we also walked to the old Thrumster railway line and looked inside the old station ticket office. This was a very welcome and unexpected addition to our stay.

The property is old but this adds to the charm.

Verified reviewFriendly welcome, which is very important. Somewhere secure to store our bikes overnight. Good advice re the local pub for dining. Comfortable rooms and great, quiet location. The house and furnishings are from an older era, that wouldn't be out of place in a period drama and that just added to the overall charm of the place. Breakfast was lovely, offered in a beautiful old dining room. Anyone looking for modern facilities may be disappointed but there was WiFi and TV in the rooms. We all really enjoyed our one night there.

Place very run down, kettle was black inside, bath plug whole was totally rusted, very musky damp smelling. Cannot understand how it is classed as a 4 star B&B

Verified reviewThe two ladies who run the b&b are lovely people. We had a good breakfast, too.
Information on Booking.com is misleading. This is not a hotel, and it's not 4*. It's a lovely house that needs a lot of investment to bring it up to 4*hotel. It was like entering a different century. Our bedroom door wouldn't even close properly, so it was not lockable. The shower was randomly unbearably hot or cold and just a trickle. Not recommended.

Verified reviewCatherine ams Islay are great hosts. Thrumster house has a lot of character with pretty pond and fabulous flowers and nearby Broch. Quiet country setting long wooded driveway. We enjoyed hearing about the history of the estate built in 1790. The small town of Wick is a 15 minute drive with Old Pulteney distillery. Breakfast was awesome. The double room and bed we stayed in was comfortable.
Our friend travel companion stayed in the single bedroom and said both beds in her room were uncomfortable and sagged in the middle.

Verified reviewThe hosts, Catherine, and mum Isla were fantastic. Friendly and knowledgeable of the area. This was a different kind of stay, from the normal faceless hotel. If you want a homely, welcoming, wholesome stay, this is for you. We loved their dogs, and even sat by the fire in the evening and sampled some local whiskey. Our double room was clean, great hot shower and a lovely refreshment tray set up for our arrival. Breakfast was amazing, with lots of choice, fresh items, a plentiful cooked option, and all served in the beautiful dining room. A quick walk will take you to the old Smiddy where a hearty pub meal is available. Thank you both.

Verified reviewIt was lovely to stay in this old lovely family home and meet Katherine and her Mum. We stayed in the double room and the bed was comfortable. We had water, fresh milk and biscuits in the room and the towels were large and fluffy. We enjoyed meeting Bertie the resident doggy and the breakfast was great as well. We did a short circular walk around the estate which was interesting. The Thrumster old station room is charming. Don’t stay in Wick stay here!
It clearly needs a lot of work and is very damp in places but don’t let that put you off. It’s a well loved family home stay and we enjoyed our one night visit.

Very special stay! Delicious breakfast in their dining room containing their 19th & early 20th century family furniture, serving dishes, china, etc.-a lovely step back in time.

Verified reviewThe location is perfect for a NC500 trip. The house is old and charming. The dogs are very friendly and the grounds are beautiful and full of history. The host is helpful and accommodating. The opportunity to sit in a relaxed lounge in front of a real fire with a complimentary drink later in the evening is great. The breakfast is good and the whole experience is value for money.
The house is old and charming with some flaws. The room we had was accessed via another single unoccupied room. You could not lock the door of our bedroom but it did not feel unsafe. The sink was in the bedroom with the shower and toilet in the bathroom. There was a huge mirror that was on a downward angle and could not be used without holding it upright.
