The house has such potential but needs extensive investment for this beautiful historic building.

The location was excellent and the hosts were very friendly, including the family dogs. Fabulous breakfast.

The WiFi seemed a little temperamental: this wasn’t a huge issue for us, but may be more of a challenge for those who need to be connected.

We had a great stay at Thrumster House as part of our NC500 trip. Catherine was a wonderful host and so welcoming, and the house itself is beautiful and full of traditional country charm. Breakfast in the morning was a particular highlight, and we enjoyed the company of the friendly dogs. Overall, it was a memorable and unique place to stay and we’d definitely recommend it.

The road leading to the house from the main road was in a poor state.

Very hospitable. It felt as though we were friends of the family rather than customers. A very relaxed atmosphere. The house is quite unique.

    Nothing

Friendly welcome, which is very important. Somewhere secure to store our bikes overnight. Good advice re the local pub for dining. Comfortable rooms and great, quiet location. The house and furnishings are from an older era, that wouldn't be out of place in a period drama and that just added to the overall charm of the place. Breakfast was lovely, offered in a beautiful old dining room. Anyone looking for modern facilities may be disappointed but there was WiFi and TV in the rooms. We all really enjoyed our one night there.

Our friend travel companion stayed in the single bedroom and said both beds in her room were uncomfortable and sagged in the middle.

Catherine ams Islay are great hosts. Thrumster house has a lot of character with pretty pond and fabulous flowers and nearby Broch. Quiet country setting long wooded driveway. We enjoyed hearing about the history of the estate built in 1790. The small town of Wick is a 15 minute drive with Old Pulteney distillery. Breakfast was awesome. The double room and bed we stayed in was comfortable.

The hosts, Catherine, and mum Isla were fantastic. Friendly and knowledgeable of the area. This was a different kind of stay, from the normal faceless hotel. If you want a homely, welcoming, wholesome stay, this is for you. We loved their dogs, and even sat by the fire in the evening and sampled some local whiskey. Our double room was clean, great hot shower and a lovely refreshment tray set up for our arrival. Breakfast was amazing, with lots of choice, fresh items, a plentiful cooked option, and all served in the beautiful dining room. A quick walk will take you to the old Smiddy where a hearty pub meal is available. Thank you both.

It clearly needs a lot of work and is very damp in places but don’t let that put you off. It’s a well loved family home stay and we enjoyed our one night visit.

It was lovely to stay in this old lovely family home and meet Katherine and her Mum. We stayed in the double room and the bed was comfortable. We had water, fresh milk and biscuits in the room and the towels were large and fluffy. We enjoyed meeting Bertie the resident doggy and the breakfast was great as well. We did a short circular walk around the estate which was interesting. The Thrumster old station room is charming. Don’t stay in Wick stay here!

The house is old and charming with some flaws. The room we had was accessed via another single unoccupied room. You could not lock the door of our bedroom but it did not feel unsafe. The sink was in the bedroom with the shower and toilet in the bathroom. There was a huge mirror that was on a downward angle and could not be used without holding it upright.

The location is perfect for a NC500 trip. The house is old and charming. The dogs are very friendly and the grounds are beautiful and full of history. The host is helpful and accommodating. The opportunity to sit in a relaxed lounge in front of a real fire with a complimentary drink later in the evening is great. The breakfast is good and the whole experience is value for money.

It's not a criticism to say that the property would benefit from some renovation - its goes with having been built in the 18th Century! While the public areas (i.e. sitting room, dining room) were very comfortable, the bedroom furniture was unsurprisingly somewhat antiquated while the bathroom is less than ideal - all part of the experience!

A "quirky" property with considerable charm and character. The hospitality of the host was extraordinary which made our stay a delightful experience. Breakfast was cooked to order and was a highlight of the overall experience.

My husband would say the bed could have been more comfy, the TV be larger and maybe mounted on a wall, but let's be honest, it would then feel really out of character.

This is a stay that divided opinions between myself and my husband. He likes comfort and modern luxury whilst I value character and beauty. I booked the stay. I love the creaky floors, the real working country house feel of the place, the gorgeous dogs, the laid up breakfast table, the roaring fire, wonderful grounds to walk through. Just look at the photos.

The double bed was a small double and a metal frame bed which moved a lot, when one person moved the other woke up so not the best nights sleep.
